CHAPTER 1
PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

In Greek mythology, Talos was a giant constructed of bronze who acted as

a guardian for the island of Crete. He would throw boulders at the ships of invaders

and would complete 3 circuits around the island's perimeter daily. This is one of

the earliest stories regarding what would be considered today as “Artificial

Intelligence” and during the 17th century. Leibniz, Thomas Hobbes, and René

Descartes explored the possibility that all rational thought could be made as

systematic as algebra or geometry. Hobbes famously wrote in Leviathan: "Reason

is nothing but reckoning".

Alan Turing's theory of computation showed that any shape of computation

could be defined digitally. The close relationships among these ideas suggested

that it is probably feasible to assemble an "electronic brain”. The term "Artificial

Intelligence" itself was officially introduced by John McCarthy at the workshop.

According to an Article by Jaro Education, Artificial Intelligence is an artwork

of modern technology wherein computerized simulations of human procedures are

generated with the use of machines or laptop systems. In simpler terms, AI is an

artificially made program to depict human thoughts in higher form. Still, the idea of

AI is new and has a variety of undiscovered and hidden ideas. Artificial Intelligence

is an acquiring force in one’s life. Most of one’s daily activities are influenced by

calculations or Algorithms such as Facebook news and Tiktok feed, it can also

drastically increase the efficiency or speed of doing tasks such as researching and

finding sources for an individual’s study.

According to an article by Kyoungwon Seo et al. (2021), Artificial

Intelligence offers effective support for online learning and teaching, this also

includes personalized learning for students and automating several tasks for the

instructor.

According to an article by eSchool News, the effect of artificial intelligence

on schooling and on college students is multifaceted, revolutionizing their

academic journey. Personalized learning, facilitated through AI algorithms, tailors

academic content material to person needs, improving expertise and engagement.

Although the usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to complete their schoolwork

raises concerns about academic integrity, personal responsibility, and the

development of essential skills, AI technology offers convenience and efficiency in

completing assignments, relying excessively on AI tools to generate or complete

schoolwork undermines the principles of academic honesty and integrity. Students

who use AI to plagiarize or produce work without genuine effort not only violate

academic codes of conduct but also miss out on valuable learning opportunities

and the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Moreover, the

widespread use of AI for academic purposes may create a culture of dependency,

where students prioritize shortcuts and quick fixes over the process of genuine

learning and intellectual growth. This overreliance on AI technology may hinder

students' ability to think independently, creatively, and analytically, diminishing

their capacity to engage deeply with course materials and develop a

comprehensive understanding of academic concepts. Additionally, the unethical

use of AI to complete schoolwork may erode students' sense of personal

responsibility and accountability for their academic achievements, leading to a

devaluation of academic credentials and undermining the integrity of educational

institutions.

A study by Shehab Eldeen Ayman et al. (2023) revealed that students who

experienced higher workloads were more likely to use ChatGPT which in turn

developed the habits of procrastination among them and caused memory loss.

Similarly, workload had a negative indirect effect on academic performance

through the use of ChatGPT. Therefore, this study also aims to learn the effects of

using AI too much on the students.

Background of the Study

The earliest substantial work in the field of artificial intelligence was done in

the mid-20th century by the British logician and computer pioneer Alan Mathison

Turing and in 1956, the Logic Theorist at Darmount Workshop was developed and

widely considered the first AI since then AI technology has advanced further and

became more complex with one of the most pivotal moment being on March 3-11

1997, when Deep Blue won against the Current Chess Grandmaster at the time

Gary Kasparov proving the capability of Artificial Intelligence over Human Minds.

As Artificial Intelligence technology has risen in popularity in the past few years, its

uses have also become more varied such as navigation, image generation, and

most popularly among students; essay generation and its ability to solve problems.

In the contemporary educational landscape, the integration of technology,

particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), has become increasingly prevalent, offering

promising avenues for enhancing learning experiences. Within this context, the

focus on improving academic performance among Junior High School students

has garnered significant attention.

Junior High School marks a crucial stage in academic development, where

students begin to grapple with complex concepts across various subjects.

However, challenges such as differing learning paces, diverse learning styles, and

limited personalized attention often impede students' academic progress.

Traditional teaching methods, while effective to some extent, may not sufficiently

address these individualized needs.

According to Crimson Education, Junior High School is a crucial part of a

student’s life as it’s the transition from Elementary and prepares them to develop

their skill in preparation for Senior High School and College.

Furthermore, AI offers the potential to provide personalized feedback,

identify areas of weakness, and offer targeted interventions to support students in

overcoming academic hurdles. Through adaptive learning technologies, AI can

dynamically adjust content delivery and difficulty levels, fostering a more engaging

and effective learning environment.

Moreover, integrating AI into educational practices not only enhances

academic performance but also cultivates crucial 21st-century skills such as critical

thinking, problem-solving, and digital literacy. By engaging with AI-driven

educational resources, students are exposed to innovative learning approaches

that mirror real-world applications, preparing them for future academic and

professional endeavors.

Recognizing these challenges, this research investigates the effectiveness

of utilizing AI to enhance the academic works of Junior High School students. By

leveraging AI-powered tools and platforms, such as intelligent tutoring systems,

adaptive learning algorithms, and educational applications, educators can tailor

instruction to suit students' unique learning profiles.

Despite the burgeoning interest in AI's role in education, empirical research

examining its impact on Junior High School students' academic work remains

limited. Therefore, this study seeks to fill this gap by conducting a comprehensive

investigation into the effectiveness of AI in improving academic outcomes among

Junior High School students.

Through rigorous analysis and evaluation, this research aims to contribute

valuable insights to the educational community, informing best practices, and

guiding future efforts to harness the transformative potential of AI in enhancing

learning experiences for Junior High School students.

Intelligence, promotes learning processes. Theories the different ways Artificial

Intelligence Technology can promote learning processes in his paper, he

discussed a three-level model that synthesizes and unifies existing learning

theories to model the roles of artificial intelligence (AI) in promoting learning

processes. Explaining how learning occurs and works across micro, meso, and

macro levels can AI developers focus their work with learning designers,

researchers, and practitioners to leverage the proposed roles to improve individual

learning, team performance, and building knowledge communities.

A Paper by Safae El Gazi and Ahmed Ibrahimi titled “Personalized

Learning: Theory, Practices, and Perspectives” discussed how education is going

through a profound transformation in today’s rapidly evolving digital age and how

the shift towards personalization and personalized learning is essential to address

the unique learning styles, interests, and paces of individual students. Artificial

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Usage of AI in Schoolworks

Kumar and Thakur (2012) said that the computing world has a lot to gain or

benefit from neural networks approaches. Their ability to learn by example makes

them very flexible and powerful. Neural networks and artificial intelligence form to

create intelligent behavior and in the future, machines will be more sophisticated

than what we currently have pertaining similar characteristics to a human being.

Yun Dai et al. (2020) discussed that in the ever changing socio-economic

landscape, students must be ready for an AI-infused future, and has been voiced

by many educators. AI has proven itself to be a powerful and useful technology for

students.

Boulay (2016) discusses how AIED performs better than both CAI systems

and human teachers working in large classes, albeit performing slightly worse than

one-on-one tutor classes although it is important to note that in the study most of

the systems taught mathematics or STEM subjects because these are the kinds

of subject for which it is easier to build the domain and student models.

Casamayor et al. (2009) showed that AI is helpful in detecting collaboration

conflicts and proves as a great assistance to educators by lightening this hard and

time-consuming task that is carried out by teachers. Proving that Collaborative E-

Learning is much more effective than traditional teaching methods in a Distance

learning setting.
Pagsanjan Science and Business College Inc.
J.P. Rizal St. Pagsanjan, Laguna
12
Grassini (2023) Stated that the deployment of AI for grading short answer

responses in an online learning environment has been evidenced successfully in

past studies. Furthermore, it has been argued that an AI-powered automatic

grader, which is to be used to prepare an exam, could potentially serve as a

teaching aid for the students and help them achieve higher exam scores. AI tools

may help lecturers to decrease their current workload and therefore promote more

research and lifelong learning activities.

Quality of Schoolwork

Shemshack and Spector (2020) discussed how personalized learning is

much more effective than the standard or traditional teaching method, this is due

to each student having a different background, cultural preferences, learning style,

etc. However, this method of teaching will make it harder for educators to teach as

each student will require a different learning method. Though this is an issue, it

can be supplemented by using AI to model a teaching method for each student.

Nuraini, et al., (2015) stated that to develop intentional learners, the

curriculum must go beyond helping students gain knowledge for knowledge’s sake

in engaging students in the construction of knowledge for the sake of addressing

the challenges faced by a complex and global society. Rather than making a

student memorize words to pass a standardized, it might be better to teach them

how to engage in real-world problems and how to use the skills that the student

learned at school.
Pagsanjan Science and Business College Inc.
J.P. Rizal St. Pagsanjan, Laguna
13
Bryan and Burstein (2010) said that homework is a major factor in a

student’s grade and failure to complete some can lead to a huge impact on your

final marks, therefore, having excellent homework can give students higher grades

which can be achieved using AI tools such as ChatGPT.

Cooper, Robinson, and Patall (2006) investigated that there is a positive

influence of homework on achievement. Their studies revealed that a stronger

correlation existed especially in Grades 7-12 as opposed to Kinder-Grade 6,

although this study is limited to not having subject matter in mind, this can tell us

how homework affects our future achievements and academic development as a

whole.

Grodner, et al. (2013) found considerable evidence that proves that

homework is beneficial to student learning and that students with homework are

more likely to be retained in the course and have significantly better test

performance, especially for students who initially perform poorly in the course.

Proving that students who do their homework are less likely to fail and more likely

to have good grades compared to those who don’t.

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

Jansen, et al., (2020) stated that Research Methodology refers to how a

research study will be systematically conducted to ensure a valid and reliable result

that addresses the research aims, objectives, and research questions.

Research Design

The researchers will apply a Qualitative which Aspers (2019) describes as

an iterative process that improves understanding of the scientific community

achieved by making new significant distinctions resulting from getting closer to the

phenomenon studied. The researcher also used a Descriptive type of research in

this study where they will interview research participants to find meaningful results.

Setting of the Study

This study will be conducted at Pagsanjan Science and Business College,

located at Pagsanjan, Laguna Phillippines. Five (5) students coming from Grade

8- Grade 10 will be the researcher’s respondents.

Sampling and Subject of the Study

The sampling method to be used in this study is Non-Random Sampling.

Non-random sampling is a procedure that will not bid a basis for any opinion of

probability that elements in the universe will have a chance to be included in the

study sample” Etikan and Bala (2017). According to Nikolopoulou (2023),

purposive sampling is a method in which participants are selected based on what

the researcher needs. The Respondents of this study will be from the Junior High

School department of Pagsanjan Science and Business College. According to an

article by Dr. Heena Rachh, JHS is a crucial part of a student’s life as it’s the

transition from Elementary and prepares them by developing their skill in

preparation for Senior High School and College. Moreover, having high marks in

Junior High School will help one stand out among other College applications as

besides 11th Grade this will be where they’ll base your academic skills.

Research Instrument

The research instrument to be used is the interview. The interview is

described as a formal conversation between two or more people, typically with one

person, the interviewer asks questions to obtain information, assess qualifications,

or evaluate the suitability of a candidate for a job, admission, or other purposes

(Puri, 2024). It will be used to collect data from participants with the help of a

questionnaire for guide questions.

Pagsanjan Science and Business College Inc.
J.P. Rizal St. Pagsanjan, Laguna
17
Research Procedure

To gather data from participants, the researcher will interview them one by

one in order to get the answers which will be then compiled and organized

accordingly to find any meaningful patterns or data from the responses of the

participants and then compile the results of this research to draw a fitting

conclusion. Though in order to conduct an interview a formal letter to the principal

and faculty members of the chosen department must be given to ask for

permission to conduct interviews.

Data Analysis Procedure

Narrative Analysis as defined by Jean Kaluza (2023), is a type of qualitative

data analysis that focuses on interpreting the core narratives. Coding is described

by Alyona Medelyan PhD (2021) as the process of labeling and organizing

qualitative data in order to identify different themes and the relationships between

them. These will be used to systematically categorize and organize the data

obtained from the research participants in order to identify patterns, themes, and

meaningful data within the narrative.

Ethical Consideration
Pagsanjan Science and Business College Inc.
J.P. Rizal St. Pagsanjan, Laguna
18
For ethical research considerations, before the study is conducted, the

respondents will receive a detailed briefing and key information about the purpose

of the study. The Researchers also ensure that everyone participating in the study

will be safe and no harm will come to them at all and the Researchers will have full

control of the study and are aware of all the consequences involved. Through

informed consent, the respondents willingly decided to take part in the study with

the knowledge that the information they provide will be recorded and for the benefit

of the participants compensation will be given for the time they spent participating

in the study.

To ensure a fair and just selection, the researchers will choose respondents

that fit the sample of the researcher. To avoid potential harm to the students, all of

their information will be handled with utmost confidentiality by not disclosing the

names and identities of the respondents. The researchers will also respect the

right of the participant to remain silent in the provided questions and their rights to

cooperate with the study or not.
