Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for

Geologist
Role:
Geologist
Location: Elk Gold Mine, British Columbia, Canada
Purpose: To conduct geological investigations, collect and analyze geological data, and provide
critical information for mine planning and operations to ensure efficient and cost-effective
extraction of gold ore.

1. Responsibilities

 Conduct geological mapping and sampling.


 Collect, analyze, and interpret geological data.
 Maintain and update geological models.
 Provide geological input for mine planning and operations.
 Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
 Monitor and report on geological conditions and changes.

2. Procedures

A. Data Collection and Analysis

Fieldwork:

 Conduct detailed geological mapping of the mine site.


 Collect rock, soil, and core samples for analysis.
 Use geophysical and geochemical techniques to gather subsurface data.

Data Management:

 Maintain accurate records of all geological data.


 Use geological software (Leapfrog, Vulcan) to input, analyze, and interpret data.
 Ensure data is regularly updated and securely stored.

B. Geological Modeling

Model Development:

 Develop and maintain 3D geological models of the ore body.


 Integrate drilling, sampling, and geophysical data into geological models.
 Update models based on new data and exploration results.

Resource Estimation:

 Conduct resource estimation using industry-standard methods and software.


 Collaborate with the Long-Term Planning Engineer to ensure resource models align with
mine plans.
 Validate and verify resource estimates through peer review and external audits.

C. Coordination and Communication

Cross-Departmental Collaboration:

 Regularly communicate with the operations team to provide geological input for short-
term and long-term mine plans.
 Work closely with the Drill and Blast Engineer to optimize drilling and blasting
operations.
 Coordinate with the Short-Term and Long-Term Planning Engineers to ensure geological
data is integrated into mine planning.

Operational Support:

 Provide geological support during drilling, blasting, and mining operations.


 Adjust geological models and provide real-time feedback based on operational
conditions.
 Attend daily and weekly operations meetings to discuss geological findings and
implications.

D. Monitoring and Reporting

Site Monitoring:

 Conduct regular site visits to monitor geological conditions and changes.


 Observe and document any deviations from expected geological patterns.

Reporting:

 Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports on geological findings and activities.
 Highlight significant geological changes, risks, and opportunities.
 Update the mine management team and other stakeholders on geological conditions and
their impact on operations.

E. Safety and Environmental Compliance

Safety Standards:

 Ensure all geological activities comply with safety protocols and risk assessments.
 Conduct safety briefings and participate in safety audits.
 Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during fieldwork.

Environmental Regulations:

 Integrate environmental management plans and regulations into geological investigations.


 Monitor environmental impacts of geological activities and recommend mitigation
measures.
 Ensure responsible handling and disposal of geological samples and materials.

F. Continuous Improvement

Review and Feedback:

 Regularly review geological methods and outcomes to identify areas for improvement.
 Seek feedback from the operations team and other stakeholders to improve geological
processes.

 Prepare documentation for internal and external audits and inspections.

H. Emergency Response

Emergency Planning:

 Develop contingency plans for potential geological emergencies, such as landslides,


subsidence, and hazardous material exposure.
 Coordinate with the HSE Manager to integrate emergency response plans into geological
operations.

Response and Recovery:

 Support the implementation of emergency response and recovery plans.


 Assist in the evaluation and adjustment of geological models and plans post-incident.

 This SOP must be reviewed and approved by the Chief Geologist and General Manager.

 The SOP should be reviewed annually or as needed based on operational changes or
