101/1 ENGLISH
PAPER 1
MARKING SCHEME

1. Your friend has just invited you to join them for a party organized to
celebrate their sister’s graduation. However, you will not be able to attend for
some three reasons. Write a reply letter to your friend declining this
invitation. Remember to cite the reasons for not accepting it. (20 mks)

Expect a reply letter to an invitation

a) Format (5mks)

 Sender’s address --- 1mk(deny if name is included)


 Date --- 1 mk(deny if part of the address)
 Salutation --- 1 mk(don’t accept Dear sir/Madam)
 Closing/ Valediction ---1 mk(don’t accept Yours faithfully and Signature)
 Name --- 1 mk

b) Content (8mks)
 Greetings --- 1mk
 Appreciation of the invitation --- 1mk
 Statement declining the invitation --- 1mk
 Three reasons for not accepting --- 3mks
 Apology for not honoring the invitation --- 1 mk

c) Language and Mechanicsof Writing (08 marks)

Descriptions of language at different levels of proficiency are given below. The


examiner should place each candidate’s work accordingly.

Group D (01- 02 mks)


Candidate does not communicate and their language ability is so minimal that the
examiner has to guess what they intended to write.
 Poor use of expressions
 Poor use of punctuation marks
 Hardly any correct sentences
 Spelling errors.

Group C (03— 04marks)


 Lack of confidence in language use
 Very simple sentences.
 All manner of grammatical errors.
 Mother- tongue interference
 Poor organization of ideas.
Group B (05—06) mks
 Communicates fluently, with ease of expressions.
 Well-constructed sentences
 Great punctuations and spellings
 Good use of vocabulary
 Some errors of grammar

Group A (07- 08 marks)


Ease of expressions
 No errors of punctuation, spelling and grammar
 planning / organization of ideas
 Clever use of vocabulary and maturity in language
 Definite spark.
