Question Bank: Height and Distances

Basic Level

1. A boy is looking at the top of a tree at an angle of elevation of 30°. If the tree is 20 m tall,
find the distance between the boy and the base of the tree.
2. From a point on the ground, the angle of elevation of the top of a building is 45°. If the
height of the building is 30 m, find the distance of the point from the building.
3. The angle of elevation of the top of a flagpole from a point 15 m away from its base is
60°. Find the height of the flagpole.
4. A ladder leans against a wall, making an angle of 60° with the ground. If the ladder is 10
m long, find the height it reaches on the wall.
5. The shadow of a tower is 20 m long when the angle of elevation of the sun is 45°. Find
the height of the tower.

Intermediate Level

6. A man observes the top of a hill at an angle of elevation of 30°. After walking 100 m
towards the hill, the angle of elevation becomes 60°. Find the height of the hill.
7. Two buildings are 30 m apart. The height of one building is 50 m, and the angle of
elevation of the top of the taller building from the top of the shorter building is 30°. Find
the height of the shorter building.
8. The angle of depression of a car on the road from the top of a tower is 30°. If the height
of the tower is 50 m, find the distance of the car from the base of the tower.
9. From the top of a lighthouse 60 m high, the angles of depression of two boats are
observed to be 30° and 45°. Find the distance between the two boats if they are on the
same side of the lighthouse.
10. A kite is flying at a height of 50 m. The string attached to the kite makes an angle of 60°
with the ground. Find the length of the string.

Advanced Level

11. A vertical pole 6 m high casts a shadow 2√3 m long. Find the angle of elevation of the
sun.
12. The top of a tower is observed at an angle of elevation of 60° from a point 40 m away
from its base. Find the height of the tower.
13. From the top of a 20 m high building, the angle of depression of a car parked at some
distance is 30°. Find the distance of the car from the building.
14. Two poles of heights 10 m and 15 m are 20 m apart. Find the angle of elevation of the top
of the taller pole from the base of the shorter pole.
15. The angles of elevation of the top of a tower from two points at distances 10 m and 20 m
from its base are complementary. Find the height of the tower.

Mixed Applications
16. A person observes the top of a tree at an angle of elevation of 45°. After walking 20 m
closer to the tree, the angle of elevation becomes 60°. Find the height of the tree.
17. The angle of elevation of the top of a building from a point on the ground is 30°. After
moving 50 m closer to the building, the angle of elevation becomes 60°. Find the height
of the building.
18. A balloon is observed from two points on the ground at angles of elevation of 30° and
60°. The points are 100 m apart. Find the height of the balloon.
19. A person standing on a hill observes the angles of depression of two cars parked at
distances of 50 m and 100 m as 30° and 45°, respectively. Find the height of the hill.
20. The angle of elevation of the top of a tower is 45°. If the tower is 25 m tall, find the
distance of the observer from the tower.

Challenging Problems

21. From a point 60 m away from the base of a building, the angle of elevation of its top is
30°. Find the height of the building.
22. A man standing on the ground observes the top of a building at an angle of elevation of
45°. He moves 10 m closer, and the angle becomes 60°. Find the height of the building.
23. A pole is broken at a point 8 m above the ground, and its top touches the ground 6 m
away from the base. Find the original height of the pole.
24. The angles of elevation of the top of a tower from two points on opposite sides of it are
30° and 60°. If the points are 20 m apart, find the height of the tower.
25. The shadow of a tower is three times its height. Find the angle of elevation of the sun.
