ORDERLINESS

DEFINITION OF LAW
Law is a rule and measure which prescribes our behaviour towards one
another for the existence of peace.
Laws are made to prevent or resolve conflict, preserve life and culture and to
enthrone orderliness in the society. Generally, laws are meant to guide our
personal and public lives.
Agencies employed to enforce and maintain the law
1. Magistrate and judges of law court
2. The Nigerian armed forces
3. The police
4. State security service (SSS)
5. Defence intelligence agency (DIA)
6. The three arms of Government
7. The para-military Agencies: they include Nigerian security and civil
Defence Corps (NSCDC), federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigerian
Immigration Service (NIS), Custom and Exercise, Nigerian Correctional
Service, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), National
Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Independent Corrupt Practices
and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
PURPOSE OF THE LAW
The main purpose of law is to:
a. Maintain order in the country
b. Preserve lives and properties
c. Establish standard in the society i.e serve as a guideline to the
acceptable behaviour in the society.
d. Resolve dispute through the court system.
e. Protect the rights and liberties of citizens from unreasonable
violations by persons, government or organizations.

MEANING OF ORDERLINESS
Orderliness is a condition where things follow laid down procedures. It means
freedom from disorder.
Orderliness means activities devoid of violence, chaos, disruption. The primary
purpose of the government in the society is to maintain order.
Values that promote orderliness
Orderliness relates to other qualities like:
i. Patience
ii. Decency
iii. Diligence
iv. Cleanliness
v. Sacrifice
vi. Obedience
vii. Love and patriotism
viii. Understanding e.t.c
Common places to observe orderliness
a. Family: orderliness is paramount for a family to live in peace with one
another.
b. The school: school system requires orderliness to achieve a sound
academic height and teachers should inculcate discipline.
c. The religious system: religion has to do with faith and thus predicate on
orderliness.
d. The government system: the government must lead by example by
embracing orderliness.

Examples of orderliness in the society
a. Listening skills: having good listening skills is an example of
orderliness. Good listening skills promotes excellent communication
and breed understanding. Listening means paying attention to verbal
and non verbal messages. It requires focus.
b. Good driving skills: driving to safety entails observing traffic codes to
avoid accidents that could cause pain and death. Traffic congestion
on roads is as a result of lack of adequate driving skills. Motorist must
comply with traffic rules to avoid disorder.
c. Decorum: maintaining good manners and habit, relationships and
action is part of orderliness. One should be civil in addressing others,
kind to strangers in need of help, apologetic to those who were hurt,
e.t.c.
d. Queuing culture: this means one should remain calm, tolerant and
patient while sharing amenities with others. It involves taking turns
to be attended to and not jumping the line. It demands that public
service be done on the basis of first come, first served regardless of
one’s social status.
e. Due process: this involves following the rules of the game or
operation in anything ones does e.g taking our case to the police,
court or arbiter rather than taking laws into our hands. Government
should also follow due process for orderliness to reign.
f. Religious tolerance: for peace and order, faithful of different religious
groups should learn to accommodate and tolerate the views of
others and not get provoked into violence.
g. Obeying traffic rules and regulations: obeying traffic rules and
regulations is another way of maintaining orderliness in our society.
h. Peaceful conduct of election
i. Cleanliness: this virtue helps individuals to keep their surrounding
clean and in order. Citizens should dispose waste properly and take
part in environmental sanitation.
j. Taking examination orderly by avoiding examination malpractice

Roles of orderliness in the society


1. Promotion of peace: Orderliness in public places like mosque,
school, market etc will promote peaceful coexistence among the
people in the society.
2. Promotion of good national image: It fosters good national image,
progress and economic growth.
3. Time-saving: It saves time and reduces frustration.
4. Promotion of justice: It ensures justice in the society as citizens
are confident of being treated fairly without discrimination.
5. Protection of lives and properties: Lives and properties are
protected in a society where law and order are followed.
