SELF Module 13 SETTING GOALS AND SUCCESS

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the module the student should be able to:
1. Identify the short-term and long-term goal using the five setting goals principle. .
2. Explain the goal setting theory that contribute to individual’s success.

Introduction:
“In order to succeed, people need a sense of self-efficacy, struggle together with
resilience to meet the inevitable obstacles and inequalities of life.”
-Albert Bandura

Every individual or organization should have a vision and mission as well, a set of dreams and
big long-term goals that provide a solid base for the goals you set. Your vision and mission
inspires you and gives you energy, guides you and gives all efforts a purpose. It connects goals

with your deepest motivations and purpose.

Lesson Proper:

Question to Ponder

 Is it possible for a person not to have any goals?

 Is it possible for a person to achieve all his goal?

What is goal?
 According to Coon (2001) Goal is a target of objective of a motivated and directed chain of
behavior.

 Goals are a form of self-regulation adopted by humans to achieve specific aims. By focusing
people’s attention, goals facilitate responses that are compatible with people’s objectives

SELF Module 13 SETTING GOALS AND SUCCESS

The anatomy of a goal –directed behavior all begins within the individual a need which is lack or
a deficit. The tension is a drive that builds up and directs the individual towards the goal. When
the goal is reached the need is satisfied and the tension/drive is reduced. The need and the drive
motivate the individual towards the goal.

Importance of Setting Goals:

1. Setting goals direct the individual’s behavior.

- When the individual becomes aware of his needs, all of his behavior will be directed
towards satisfying this need, thus his goal. Behaviors that will not bring him closer to
his goal are then lessened or are totally disregarded.
2. Goals, once set can determine the individual’s progress toward accomplishing it.
-Is the individual taking his time or devoting too little effort to reach the goal? In other
words, goals serve as a measure of the individual’s progress toward attaining it.
3. Goals serve as guide to discipline behavior.
- This will make sure that the person does not divert from the right track. Behavior that
do not contribute to attaining the goal are scrapped to make way for behaviors that do.
4. Goals keep the individual busy so no time is wasted.
-To procrastinate is to achieve nothing. The significance of something is usually
measured by the amount and quality of time spent doing it.
5. Goals motivate the individual because it provide a purpose/reason for his behavior.
- Goals keep the individual on his feet, challenging him and giving meaning to
his existence.

Question to Ponder:
• Tell me about a time when you intentionally took on a task or activity that required you to
stretch the limits of your strengths?

According to Bandura , Self- Efficacy refers to the person’s beliefs about his capacity to exercise
some measure of control over his behavior and over events that take place around him.

Self-efficacy is a concept that is neither biological nor hereditary. Rather, it is an attribute that
can be learned and enhanced through the following:
1. Mastery of Learning and Skills. Practice is necessary for the individual to have mastery.
2. A Good Social Model. Learning through observation is best achieved when the model is credible
and trustworthy.
3. A Persuasive Environment. A social environment that is supportive elevates the morale of the
individual and encourages him to perform at his best every time thereby achieving his goals.
4. Physical Fitness. Competence for a physical skill initially requires that the person is in good
health.
5. Emotional Maturity. This prepares the individual for the challenges and failures encountered
on the way to his goal.

Carol Dweck is a Standford psychologist who wrote the book, Mindset: The New
Psychology of Success(2006). This book is all about the power of beliefs and how it
influences people’s lives. It also tackles how changing these beliefs alters every
aspect of an individual’s existence.

Mindset - A self-perception or “self-theory” that people hold about themselves.

Types of Mindset
1. Fixed Mindset. A person believes that their character, intelligence and creativity
are innate/inborn and cannot be changed or altered.
2. Growth Mindset. A person’s basic qualities can be learned or cultivated through hard work and
effort

SELF Module 13 SETTING GOALS AND SUCCESS

Prof. Edwin Locke of the University of Maryland proposed the ” Goal Setting Theory.”
What is Locke’s goal setting theory?
Edwin Locke and Gary Latham conducted research into setting goals. This resulted in the goal-
setting theory, which shows how goals and feedback can be highly motivating factors for
employees. Locke’s Goal-Setting Theory was created based on five principles.

Five Goal Setting Principles

1. Clarity. The first thing that should be considered in setting goals is to determine
what the person is really trying to achieve. The S.M.A.R.T mnemonic is useful.
2. Challenge. Goal should be challenge the person’s ability to make him exert more
effort in learning something new and growing along the way.
3. Commitment. This means owning the goal and making it one’s responsibility to
make sure that behaviors are undertaken to achieve it.
4. Feedback. Suggestion should be welcomed and wisdom from the expert should
be given due consideration.
5. Task complexity. Complex goals can overwhelm the person and will take a
longer time to accomplish.
