Introduction

This course is an introductory class to Sociology as a discipline. It includes basic concepts in the
field of Sociology, the relationship of individual to culture, groups and major social institutions. It
also covers an examination of the major theoretical perspectives in the field of Sociology, methods
of empirical investigation of social phenomena, socialization, group structure, principles of social
organisation, community structure, population and social change.

Course Objectives

This course is to acquaint students with the understanding of the structure and processes of
modern societies and their historical antecedents. It is also meant to explore the universality of the
social experience through topics like culture, socialization, social interaction, bureaucracy, norms
and diversity, social inequality, social institutions, modernization, technology and social change,
world views, values and behaviour among others.

Course Instructions

Attendance in classes is compulsory for all students. Students who fail to meet up with seventy
percent (70%) attendance will not be allowed to sit for the final examination in this course. All
handsets are expected to be switched off or put in silence. Students are expected to respect the
rights of other students.
