1.1 THERE IS/ THERE ARE


We use there is and there are when we refer to the existence of someone or something:
THERE IS (SINGULAR) There is a book on the desk
THERE ARE (PLURAL) There are books on the desk / there are three books on the desk
We can use contraction in there is =There´s a student in the room. But we can´t use
contractions in there are only in the negative form for example: There aren´t books on the
desk.
AFFIRMATIVE FORM
There is a man in the field
There are two dogs in my house.
NEGATIVE FORM
There isn´t a boy on the street
There aren´t cats on the roof.
INTERROGATIVE FORM
Is there an apple in the fridge? Yes, there is/ No, there isn´t / Yes, it is/ No, it isn´t
Are there tomatoes in the basket? Yes, there are/ No, there aren´t/ Yes, They are/ No,
they aren´t.
Exercise in class:

COUNTABLE NOUNS: They are things we can count. For example: PENCIL. We can
have one, two, three or more pencils. Here are some more countable nouns:
 Dog, cat, animal, man, person
 Bottle, box, litre, vehicle
 Coin, note, dollar, day
 Cup, plate, fork, knife
 Table, chair, suitcase, bag

UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS: They are substances, concepts, etc. That we can´t divide into
separate elements. We can´t count them. For example, we can´t count “milk”. We can
count “bottles of milk”. Here are some more uncountable nouns:
 Music, art, love, happiness, intelligence
 Advice, information, news, traffic, time
 Furniture, luggage, wood, bread, justice
 Rice, sugar, butter, water, electricity, gas,
 Power, coffee, food, money, meat, advice
 Cheese, noise, fruit, oil, etc.

We usually treat uncountable nouns as singular. We use a singular verb. For Examples:
This information is very important. /Your luggage looks heavy.
We don´t usually use the indefinite article a/an with uncountable nouns. We can´t say “an
information” or “a music”. But we can say:
 A piece of (news, music, advice)
 A bottle of water
 A grain of rice
 A loaf of bread
 A glass of water
 A jar of jam
 A jug of water
 A cup of coffee or tea

USE OF SOME AND ANY


Some and any are used to state the quantity. Some and any are quantifiers. Some and
any can be used when:

1. The exact number is not known.


2. The exact number is not important or relevant.
3. Some and any are used with countable and uncountable nouns.

1.2 TRADE AND MONEY

We use demonstrative adjectives to point out specific people, things or places.

This, that, these and those are demonstrative adjectives.

 This (Este, ésta, esto) is used to refer to a single person, thing or place that is
close to or near the speaker.
 That (Ese, ésa, eso, aquél, aquélla) is used when the person, thing or place is
more distant or far. It is used in singular.

 This computer is easy to use.


 That coat on the chair is mine.

 These (estos, estas) is the plural form of this. (near)


 Those (ésos, esas aquellos, aquellas) is the plural form of that. (far)

 These letters are urgent. Please post them immediately.


 Those men in the street are policemen.
