Summary
As police officers, we are expected to be thorough and
have expertise in fields like Law, Forensics, Interrogation,
Law & Order, Investigation, etc. But, in this ever-changing
world, staying up to date is not only difficult but also
close to impossible while working on average more than
14 hours a day and seven days a week.

We can use AI to supplement our methods of gaining

knowledge so that we are updated on a daily basis. This
paper discusses various methods.

It discusses AI tools used for Document summarization,

Journaling/note-taking, Drafting, and Social Media
management.

At the end, various areas in Policing, where we can use AI

are discussed.

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored report. It is my

opinion based on my experience with these AI tools.
Document Summarizer

Many documents are readily available to us to gain

knowledge, like

SOPs
Circulars
Judgements
News Articles
Reports etc.

Reading, understanding, and remembering key points from

these documents takes time and requires our complete
attention.

Here, we can leverage AI to help us summarize these

documents and also engage in dialogue with them, asking
them as if we were asking a teacher or an expert in that
field.

I use tools “Afforai” (https://afforai.com/) and “DocXter”

(https://docxter.app/). Let's learn how it can enhance our
learning capabilities.
First of all, it supports multiple document formats

Next, you can engage directly with the document and ask it
to summarize or any other question.
It can even bunch multiple documents together, and we
can ask them questions so that key points from various
documents, on a given subject can be extracted.

Also, you can choose various AI models.

Now, there is always a possibility that AI’s response may
be doubtful or it is hallucinating. In Afforai, we can see from
citations where it has gathered such information.

Also, we can see from the document itself, directly. This is a

way to check the authenticity of the response.
This is another website, which I use for summarizing and
interacting with Documents. It has similar functionality as
that of Afforai.
Journaling
We need to document our work daily, be it notes taken,
tasks to be done, checklists, To-do, etc. Many
initiatives, good work done, and solved cases need to
be documented for future reference. But we hardly
have any time to document or journal. Also, by doing
this, our learning gets reinforced, and various studies
have proven that daily journaling reduces stress, which
we experience due to our nature of work.

For this, I empower myself with an AI based service

“Speech To Note” (https://speechtonote.com/), which
makes the process of documentation a breeze.
In this, we can record our voice or upload an audio file. It
first provides a transcript of our recorded voice.
It looked normal until now. After getting our transcripts, they
are usually unorganised. There is no capitalisation,
sentence breaks, paragraphs, etc. Nothing can be made out
of them.
Now, AI comes in. Various predefined formats are available
to organize the transcripts. You can choose from many. I
usually select “Simple Clear,” which organizes the
transcript into well-defined sentences, paragraphs, etc.,
with punctuation, without losing out on words used by us.
There are other versions that we can get using AI, like Book
Notes, Technical Summaries, Daily Journals, etc. We can
use them depending on the context. It's a good tool for
Journaling and note-taking.
Drafting
As Police officers, we must work on the field most of the
time. This takes away our time and energy to handle
administrative tasks like making reports, getting letters
drafted and approved, etc. If our staff is not well versed in
proper drafting, we lose time correcting the draft multiple
times. Also, there may be scenarios where we need to
shorten the draft, change the tone of the letter, remove
jargon, etc., depending on the context.

To save time, I use AI features in “Grammarly”

We can use it in our Microsoft Word, Browser, Excel, PPTs
etc. It can correct us as we type. Also, it can correct a
written draft. Below is an example of a draft, which I
created.
I have made few corrections, as suggested and also tried
to change the tone and shortened it.

This greatly enhances my capability to make better reports

within limited time and effort.
Social Media
In this digital age, it is crucial for us, those in responsible
positions, to engage with our public. Awareness of the ill
effects of drugs, various Special Laws, New Criminal Laws,
Crime Against Women, Crime against Children, Cyber
Crime, Traffic rules, and more is of utmost importance. We
can leverage AI to create engaging posts on various Social
Media platforms, ensuring they reach a maximum number
of citizens. It is also vital that we share our good work with
the public, as it is their support and understanding that
drives our daily efforts to make our country a better place
to live.

But, due to our multiple responsibilities, we need more time

for this. Since this activity has become more of a “Not-
urgent, but Important” category, we usually postpone it.
We can leverage AI to generate engaging content.
Imagination is our limitation. We can get inspired by a topic,
such as the latest news articles, research papers, studies,
good practices, etc. These ideas can be well presented in
an engaging and understandable format so that the public
can interact with the post much better, thereby extending
the reach of our post to a wider audience.

For this, I use an AI-based service called “Followr”

It is a one-stop solution for posting
content across major social media
channels like Instagram, Twitter,
Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.

We can get inspiration from various

sources. Ideas can be unlimited.

Also, this tool can generate AI images

that are appropriate for the post to
make the post more engaging.

Now, we can publish it immediately

or schedule it for some day and
time, so that all this work can be
done over the weekend. This way,
for the whole week or month, we
don't need to bother about the
posts unless we need to post on
something latest.
Caution
1. AI response to be Audited
Using AI is tricky. There are many issues with AI responses.
The AI response must be properly audited, and due
precautions must be taken before approval.

One Good practice is to check the reference using which

AI made such a response. This way, we can cross-check
the authenticity of AI responses.

2. Read the Terms and Conditions

Another critical factor is that AI may use our input and
output data to train their AI models. This process requires
careful examination of the terms and conditions, mainly
when AI models are used by Government organizations.

3. Avoid AI on Sensitive Data

Last but not least, AI should not be used while handling
sensitive information. We should never blindly trust these
models. Hence, it's always better to be cautious and avoid
using it in all sensitive matters. This is most pertinent to the
Police Department since we deal with very sensitive
matters.
Way Forward
Before using AI to help us in many aspects of Policing, we
must address privacy concerns. For this, we can have a
localized setup of an AI model, such as an open-source
LLaMA model. Using this, we can host our own AI server,
making our data comparatively secure. Future models may
be developed that address data privacy issues more
diligently.

AI can be further used in the following areas, in the context

of Policing.

1. Predictive Policing

We have vast data, like PCR Calls, GD data, Special

reports, etc. All these data are like random dots, and if any
intelligent system is implemented, we can connect these
dots and find patterns. This will help us predict crime and
identify hotspots. This can be a dynamic exercise, where
the predictions may change when more data is fed in real-
time, and accordingly, we can change our strategy. AI can
help in designing our plan to reduce crime.
2. Crime Data Analytics

Again, we have vast Crime related data. AI can help us

understand patterns, such as in which aspects we are
doing well and where we need improvement. Also, it can
go deeper, such as which officers are most efficient,
which PS has a higher FIR to IO ratio, etc. The points can
be endless. We can fine-tune it or let AI decide and
provide insights. AI may use the best personnel
management practices per various research studies and
suggest appropriate work distribution.

3. WhatsApp Chatbot

We can train our AI on various SOPs, awareness training

material, etc. This AI can help us interact with the Public and
our IOs. Separate chatbots can be made. It will be like a
24/7 expert who can help the Public when seeking
information or giving information on any crime or
emergency. Also, IOs can get guidance if they need help in
their case or any possible L&O situation. When time is of
the essence, this Chatbot can provide immediate
suggestions.
4.Creating Training Material

Similarly, AI can help create engaging training material. We

should design our training material while keeping various
learning techniques in mind. It should be engaging and
interactive, generating interest in the material so that our
officers come back daily and learn snippets of new
information. Linking with existing cases will increase their
ability to retain the information in their memory. Many other
ideas can be tried.

These are just a few of the ideas. Our imagination limits

the possibilities.
