Compressive Strength of Concrete (Lab Manual)

The document outlines a procedure for conducting a compression test to determine the compressive strength of hardened concrete at 3, 7, and 28 days post-casting. It details the necessary apparatus, preparation of cube moulds, and the testing process, including load application and recording results. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of comparing results with standard mix design values and discusses factors affecting concrete strength, such as curing and the significance of the compressive test in construction.

COMPRESSION TEST

Objective
To determine the compressive strength of the hardened concrete on 3, 7 and 28 days after
casting.

Apparatus
i) Fresh concrete according to the required specification.
ii) Standard steel cube mould 150 x 150 x 150 mm
iii) Standard steel rod, 25mm square

Procedure
1. Prepare three cube moulds of size 150mm × 150mm × 150mm.
2. Thinly coat the interior surfaces of the assembled mould with oil for easier removal of
concrete.
3. In each mould, insert the concrete into three layers. Compact it by tamping each layer 35
times with a 25mm square steel rod.
4. Finish the top surface with a trowel and record the date of manufacturing on the surface
of the concrete.
5. Keep the cube undisturbed for 24 hours at a temperature of 18 to 22°C with relative
humidity not less than 90%.
6. After 24 hours, remove the concrete from the mould and place the cubes in curing tank
at temperature 19 to 21°C until the testing day.
7. Test the cubes at the age of 3, 7 and 28 days.
8. Place the cube in the compressive machine with the cast faces in contact with the platens.
9. Apply the load at the rate of 6.80kN per second.
10. Record the maximum load to the nearest 0.5 N/mm2.

Discussion
1. Compare and discuss the value of cube compressive strength with the value specified in
standard mix design.
2. Discuss why the strength of concrete being measured by the average result of cube
strength.
3. Discuss the effect of curing on concrete strength.
4. Discuss the important of cube compressive test in construction of concrete structure.
