Topographic Survey Report of Four

Adjacent Areas
Objective: Topographic Survey of Four Adjacent Areas

Date: December 10, 2023

Prepared by: Shubham Sarthak
Geomatics Engineering Course: CEN-203

Executive Summary:
This report documents the topographic survey of four adjacent areas
conducted using PPK-based GPS receivers and a total station. The
objective was to accurately measure the ground elevation, topography,
and features within the designated boundaries.

1. Introduction:
This report presents the findings of a topographic survey conducted
on four adjacent areas. The survey aimed to accurately measure
and document the terrain characteristics within the designated
boundaries.

2. Instruments Used:
PPK-based GPS Receivers: PPK-based GPS receivers were used for
high-accuracy positioning of Control Points and data collection.
Total Station: A total station was used for detailed measurements
and verification of critical points, terrain characteristics, land
features and collected additional data wherever needed.
Total Station Software: Sokkia was used to record data, data
import, visualization, analysis throughout the project, display real-
time measurements.
Data Processing Software: QGIS software was used to convert
raw data into meaningful information, generate maps and reports.
Tripod, Bipod, Hammer, Pegs, Paint and Brush, Measuring Tape, etc
were also used.

3. Procedure and Data Quality Control:

Deployed the GPS receiver to the field and initiated a new job by
controller.
Positioned the receiver at the designated location for control point
establishment and initiated data collection for a predetermined duration
(15-20 minutes).
Successfully collected the Northing, Easting, and elevation coordinates for
the established control point.
Repeated above steps for additional control points throughout the
designated area.

4. Surveying a Field with a Total Station

Surveying a Field with a Total Station

a. Instrument Setup:
 Position the tripod over a control point serving as the origin for
measurements.
 Securely attach the total station to the tripod.
 Centre the total station above the control point by adjusting the
tripod legs and instrument screws.
 Level the instrument using the bubble levels and tribrach levelling
screws.
b. Backsight Configuration:
 Choose another control point as the backsight and enter its
coordinates collected by GPS.
 Input the instrument height and prism height for the backsight.
c. Data Collection:
Measure various features like
roads, drainage, trees, settlements, bridges, riverbanks, etc., recordi
ng their coordinates.
d. Data Transfer and Visualization:
 Export the collected data as a zip file containing a shapefile.
 Import the shapefile into QGIS software.
 Overlay the shapefile on a basemap obtained from Google Earth.
 Compare the surveyed points to the satellite image for accuracy
verification.
e. Final Map Creation:
 Analysed the data and address discrepancies.
 Finalized the map of the surveyed area.

Performed quality checks at regular intervals by plotting them in QGIS to

ensure accuracy and completeness of data.
Identified and corrected any errors or inconsistencies by retaking the
erroneous area.

5. Data Processing and Analysis:

* Created contour maps and other relevant topographic

representations.
* Performed comprehensive analysis of the terrain, including
elevation, slope, and aspect.

6. Challenges and Experiences:

Several challenges were encountered during the survey, including:

Challenges:
 Inconsistency in GPS based Control Points
 Poor Mess Food: Impacted energy levels and morale, requiring
additional snacks and supplements to maintain focus and stamina
during the demanding fieldwork.
 Chill Weather: The initial two days were marked by unexpectedly
cold weather, necessitating adjustments to clothing and equipment
choices. This emphasized the importance of preparedness for
diverse weather conditions in mountainous environments.
 Extreme Heat: As the survey progressed, the team encountered
extreme heat and harsh sunlight. This required increased
hydration, frequent breaks, and adjustments in work schedules to
avoid heat exhaustion.
 Dense Vegetation: Bushes, thorns, and wild plants presented
obstacles during data collection, slowing down the process and
requiring extra caution to avoid injuries.
 Potential Wildlife Encounters: The presence of snakes and other
wildlife in the mountainous area added an element of risk to the
survey. The team implemented safety protocols and remained
vigilant throughout the fieldwork.
Despite these challenges, the team effectively addressed them through:
* Strong teamwork and communication: Collaborative efforts and clear
communication facilitated efficient problem-solving and ensured project
success.
* Adaptability and resourcefulness: The team readily adapted to changing
conditions and utilized available resources to overcome challenges.
* Technical expertise: The team's proficiency in surveying techniques and
data processing software ensured the accuracy and reliability of the
collected data.

Recommendations:
Advanced technology integration: Use of drones, RTK based GPS
Receivers, etc.
Invest in training and workshops to improve team proficiency few days
before Survey.
Better food should be provided to maintain energy levels and morale of
team.

6. Conclusion:

The topographic survey of areas successfully achieved its objectives,

providing valuable data on the terrain characteristics. This information has
significant applications in various fields, contributing to informed decision-
making and sustainable development. By implementing the proposed
recommendations, future surveys can be further optimized for greater
efficiency, accuracy, and comprehensive data capture.
7. Acknowledgments:

I express my gratitude to Professor Alok Bhardwaj, Technical Officer

Prashant Singh and the Geomatics Engineering team for their guidance
and support throughout this project.
