Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
following questions from … to …
Urban development and rural emptying are two sides of the same 21 st-century coin, and are global in
their extent. In the 19th and 20th centuries, as populations across the world grew fast, urbanisation processes
didn’t necessarily affect rural regions negatively. Some communities benefited from younger people moving
out to seek employment, education, and marriage in nearby cities, as families often had more children than they
could adequately support.
In the 21st century, however, as family size has shrunk dramatically nearly everywhere, the benefits of a
growing population have come to an end in developed countries.
Japan has led the way in East Asia. In 1974, the Japanese total fertility rate fell below the population
replacement rate of 2.1. Demographers would have known then that, should conditions persist, the country
would eventually slip into depopulation. Sure enough, conditions did persist, and in 2008 Japan registered its
first peacetime population decrease.
Although Tokyo’s population is now 13 million, the Kanto region of which it is the core boasts more
than 37 million people - 30% of the whole population of Japan. Elsewhere in the country, hundreds of rural
villages face imminent extinction.
Japan is not unique. Greater Seoul has around 25 million people, nearly half of South Korea’s
population in one urban area with the rest spread out across the rest of the country. And in China, the Pearl
River delta area, which encompasses Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Macau and Guangzhou, counts 100 million people
living within it, while the wider country now boasts 155 cities with more than 1 million population.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
following questions from … to …
Urbanization is a defining phenomenon of the modern era. It refers to the increasing number of people
that live in urban areas. It predominantly results from the migration of people from rural areas to cities in search
of better employment opportunities, improved living standards, and enhanced access to education and
healthcare.
The process of urbanization has several significant implications. Firstly, it can lead to economic growth,
as cities often become hubs of innovation, industry, and commerce. However, it also poses several challenges,
such as the strain on infrastructure, the rise of informal settlements, and environmental degradation. The rapid
expansion of urban areas can lead to the depletion of natural resources, increased pollution, and a higher
demand for energy.
One of the main driving forces behind urbanization is the search for employment. Cities offer a wide
range of job opportunities that are not available in rural areas. Moreover, urban areas provide better access to
services and amenities such as education, healthcare, and entertainment, which are essential for improving the
quality of life.
Despite the numerous advantages of urbanization, there are significant drawbacks. The high population
density in cities often results in inadequate housing, traffic congestion, and higher levels of pollution.
Additionally, urban areas can be marked by significant socio-economic inequalities, with a clear divide between
the wealthy and the poor.
Urban planners play a crucial role in managing the challenges associated with urbanization.
Effective city planning involves creating sustainable cities that can support their populations without
compromising the environment. This includes the development of green spaces, efficient public transport
systems, and renewable energy sources. Sustainable urban development aims to enhance the quality of life for
all residents while minimizing the ecological footprint of the city.

How to find a summer job? A guide for high school students
If you're currently in secondary school you may be interested in getting a job during your summer break.
However, you may not know how to find a summer job. Here is some useful advice for you.
Firstly, you should find out when your school will close for the summer. Then you should plan to apply
for jobs two to three months before the start of your summer break. This can help ensure that you have a job
already lined up when summer arrives. After that you need to learn about the types of jobs that are available.
For example, find out whether there are full-time or part-time jobs, and whether they require previous
experience or training so that you can feel confident about applying.
Secondly, you should prepare an application letter for the job you want to apply for. In the letter, you
should explain why you want the job and provide more details about the experiences or skills listed on your
CV. You may have to change each application letter for every specific job to increase your chances of moving
further in the hiring process. For example, your application letter for a shop assistant may highlight different
qualifications than the one for a home tutor to a young child.
Lastly, you should prepare for the job interview. If an employer is interested in hiring you, they may ask
you for an interview. Before the interview, prepare for some questions that the interviewer is likely to ask you,
such as why you want the position and what relevant skills you have. On the day of the interview, bring printed
copies of your CV and application letter in case the employer wants to review them. You should also wear a
professional outfit and try to be positive and friendly during your interview.
