Answer all questions from this section. All questions carry equal marks

Q1. A 25mm diameter steel specimen with a gauge length of 200mm is tested and the following results

were recorded. The specimen has an extension of 0.16mm under a load of 80kN. The load at elastic limit is

l00kN. The specimen yielded at a load of 120kN and the maximum load is 150kN. The final length is

256mm and the diameter at neck is 18mm. Find the

i. Young's modulus

ii. Stress at elastic limit

iii. Yield stress

iv. Ultimate stress

v. Percentage elongation

vi. Percentage reduction in area 25marks

Q2. Obtain the total elongation of the steel bar of cross-sectional area 1250mm² acted upon by the forces

shown in the diagram below. [E = 205000N/mm²]

Q3. (a)A steel bar of 20mm diameter is subject to a direct tensile force of 100KN and a shearing force of

90KN. Determine the intensities of the normal and shearing stresses across a plane inclined at an angle of

600 to the longitudinal axis of the bar. Determine also the resultant stress.
