journaling, word cutouts from magazines, etc. You may have some immediate reactions for these
questions, which is great—include those in your response. Then spend some more time exploring and
reflecting on each question to get to the heart of who you are, who you want to become, and where you
want to go.

Write Clear Goals
After you’ve spent time reflecting on who you are and where you’d like to be in the future, it’s time to
write down clear goals for yourself.
Long-term goals are something that you’d like to achieve in the future. They usually take at least
a few months but could also be years away.
Short-term goals are goals you can achieve more quickly, within days or weeks, that help you
reach your long-term goals.
For example:
Short-term goals: “I will complete all of my assignments on time.” “I will visit the tutoring center on
campus before each test.” “I will attend my instructor’s office hours at least twice.”
Short-term goals: “I will meet new people at my institution by joining one extracurricular activity per
year.” “I will connect with at least one person a month on LinkedIn.” “I will attend the job fair on
campus.”
Your goals should reflect what you want in your academic, professional, and personal life. Refer to these
goals regularly to make sure you’re doing things that align with what you want to achieve and who you
want to become. Keep in mind that goals change as you learn and grow, so it’s okay to come back and
adjust your goals whenever you see fit.
