COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, SOLIDARITY, AND CITIZENSHIP

Community - It is a dynamic social grouping whose members settle in a specific


geographical space, submit to a common political institution, engage in socio-
economic activities and share common cultural views.
Types of Community:
1. Geographical Community - it is basically a group of people occupying a
definite physical space within which the people do their social activities and
functions.
2. Community of Identity - representing various kinds of differentiations such
as gender, ethnicity or physical abilities.
3. Community of Interests - composed of people sharing common interests like
artists, pet lovers, sports enthusiasts, musicians among others.
Community Interest - It is composed of people sharing common interests like
artists, pet lovers, sports enthusiasts, musicians among others.
Applied Social Science - They are disciplines or occupations that utilize
perspectives and theories developed by experts in various fields of social sciences
for application to different situations in the daily lives of an individual or a community.
Community Dynamics - consist of the structures that function and interact with
each other creating a process that bring changes to the community as manifested in
the ways of life of the people.
- The effectiveness of community dynamics initiative can be measured on
the transformation of the community into one cohesive and stable unit with
able leaders leading the way towards the attainment of the goals set by
the community people themselves.
Community Action - includes various activities aimed at empowering people
towards becoming active contributors to the community building process.

FACTORS INFLUENCING THE DYNAMICS OF A COMMUNITY


1. Economy - It involves different activities intended to satisfy the needs of all
the members of the community. A system is adopted to ensure the flow of
goods so that the impact of any forms of deprivations may be prevented.
Migration - refers to the movement of a person from one geographical location to
another. It can be internal in which change of residence happen within the country or
external in which a person migrates to another country.

2. Politics - It provides the pattern of governance in a community. People


choose leaders that adopt different leadership approaches that they see
necessary to let the residence live the life they deserved.
Sovereignty - refers to the capacity of the community to enforce rules within its
territory.
3. Culture - It refers to the different principles, beliefs and practices that shape
the values and regulate interactions between people and within a group.
Education, religion, mass media, internal and external migration and now the
social media are responsible to the endless process of cultural transformation.
Social Stratification- It provides a view of the situations within the community
system such as how power is obtained or shared including the distribution of race
and gender in the population.
Deviance - It can be a mere result of a person’s inclination to follow a personal view
of a socially acceptable behavior and not necessarily an affront to the rules and
customary order.
CIVIL SOCIETY PERSPECTIVE OF COMMUNITY
(DIFFERENT PROGRAMS, ORGANIZATIONS, ADVOCACIES)

ZONTA CLUB
- An international civil society movement, that was founded in Buffalo, New
York, United States in 1919. It was founded by a group of businesswomen
under the leadership of Marian de Forest. Its membership requires that one
woman member shall represent each business classification as determined by
the organization.
THE GREENPEACE INTERNATIONAL
- A global environmental group composed of scientists and other professionals
who are united by a common purpose. It envisions a green and peaceful
future for all founded on collective efforts and courage and resolve of people
who support its advocacies.
TRADE UNION CONGRESS OF THE PHILIPPINES
- The biggest organization of labor unions in the country which was established
in 1975. It is affiliated with other international organizations such as the
International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and the International Trade
Union Confederation.

BAHAY PAG-ASA
- It is an institution in Pasig where children in conflict with the law (CICL) are
sent for rehabilitation. The program is run by social workers and most are
supported by the local government units.

GREENPEACE
- It was founded in 1971 in British Columbia to oppose U.S. nuclear testing in
Alaska. They are dedicated to preserving endangered species of animals,
preventing environmental abuses, and heightening environmental awareness
through direct confrontations with polluting corporations and governmental
authorities.

WORLD VISION
- It is an international NGO that provides program for overall growth of the
children in the community. Included in its programs is the scholarship grants
to children through donations from numerous sponsors around the world.

ADCOP
- Through relevant ordinances this anti-drug abused campaign in Pasig was
provided with necessary capabilities to implement programs within the locality.
There is a system of rehabilitation and other supports provided to victims and
violators of drug related laws and ordinances.

POWER - in the context of community dynamics, it pertains to the ability to influence


peoples’ behavior and institutional views affecting the community processes.
In the absence of stability, institutions will not be able to perform their
functions, thus the community will be in disarray.

LEADERSHIP is the process of directing or guiding a group towards certain goals.

THREE VIEWS / TYPES OF LEADERSHIP

1. Autocratic Leadership
- This type of leader is the one who believes that they are the center of the
organization and therefore deserved unconditional obedience.
2. Democratic Leadership
- respects the right of everyone to participate in the decision-making process.
Everyone’s view is respected for as long as it will be the majority’s decision
that will settle the issue.
3. Laissez-faire Leadership
- requires less supervision from the top since members has already exhibited
the ability to do things fairly and accurately all on their own.

SOCIAL ROLES
role performed by the family, the enforcers of community rules and those who
keep the economy running.
Social roles are defined by the cultural views and goals of the community. Such
orientation may be following a socio-cultural, economic or political end. Social roles
are constantly evolving in a dynamic social system.
Example/s:
 As a father, Francis makes sure that his children will be attending a good
school.
 Teachers are models to children, offer guidance and dedication and give
young people the power of education. Because of teachers, countries are able
to further develop socially and economically.

SOCIAL PROCESSES
- Social processes refer to forms of social interaction that occur repeatedly
(yourarticlelibrary.com). People interact in different ways and for different
purposes. Interactions are influenced or directed by a set of rules entrenched
in the culture system and politico-legal doctrines of a particular society.
Types of Social Processes:
1. Conflict and competition
- involve the struggle between individuals, between groups, between
institutions or a combination of any of them. Because of the limitations in the
resources needed by each party, conflict follows.
Example: Irene would always see to it that her outfit will make her stand out from
the rest of her classmates.
2. Cooperation
- In cooperation, the people or groups work together towards a common
purpose. It is observed usually between individuals who share common socio-
cultural and political views.
Example: The KHS-SSLG had a meeting to talk about how they can contribute to
the improvements in the school’s learning resource center.
3. Differentiation
- The distinction made between social groups and persons on the basis of
biological, physiological, and sociocultural factors such as sex, race, age,
nationality etc.
- There are people who would rather take things on their own instead of
competing with others. In the first place some of those others they don’t really
know about which is why they don’t see the idea of trying to out-smart or out-
power any of them. Such situation best defines differentiation.
Example: Josh loves to sit beneath a mango tree at the back of the school’s
main building during breaks to read his favorite books.
ACCOMODATION - A process of mutual adaption between persons or groups,
usually achieved by eliminating or reducing hostility, as by compromise or arbitration.

TYPES OF COMMUNITY
1. Formal Community - are established by organizations to achieve some
specific objectives.
2. Informal Community - are formed by the members of such groups by
themselves. They emerge naturally, in response to the common interests of
organizational members
3. Rural Community - consist of agricultural lands, also referred as pre-
industrial communities.
4. Urban Community- pertains to highly industrialize communities.
5. Local Community - group of interacting people sharing an environment. In
human communities, intent, belief, resources, preferences, needs, risks, and
a number of other conditions may be present and common, affecting the
identity of the participants and their degree of cohesiveness.
Political Structure of City and Barangay
BARANGAY COUNCIL - defined by the Local Government Code of 1991, its
primarily passes ordinances and resolutions for the effective administration of
the barangay.
MAYOR - He is the chief executive officer of the city. The one who is
responsible for the general welfare of their constituents.

The Vice Governor or Vice mayor, together with the other Sanggunian members,
exercise the Legislative power.

Vice Mayor Dudut Jaworski serves as the presiding officer of the Sangguniang
Panlungsod ng Pasig, although he has no voting privilege except in cases to break a
deadlock.

6. Global Community - The people or nations of the world, considered as being


closely connected by modern telecommunications and as being economically,
socially, and politically interdependent.
ASEAN
- An inter-governmental forum that primary purpose is to promote sustainable
economic growth, trade and investment, and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific
region.

MODULES 12-18
SOCIAL SPACE
1. Mass Media – helps us to inform, educate and entertain the masses. It also
works to transmit heritage and cultural values.
2. Social Media – A collective term for websites and applications that focus on
communication, community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and
collaboration.
- Forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking
and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share
information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos)

Community Building - A process of transforming the community into dynamic and


self-reliant social organization.
GABRIELA
- A grassroots-based alliance that organizes Filipino women, primarily from
marginalized sectors of society, and helps empower and train them to fight for
their rights and interests through collective action

BRIGADA ESKWELA
- A schools maintenance program nationwide that engages all education
stakeholders to contribute their time, efforts and resources in ensuring that
public schools are all set in time for class opening.

BALIK PROBINSYA PROGRAM


- Enacted through Executive Order (EO) No. 114, this program provides
measure that can support the decongestion of urban communities through the
equitable distribution of wealth and resources, and the provision of social
services in rural areas.

KILUSANG MAYO UNO


- aims to protect and promote the workers’ right to employment, a decent wage,
humane working conditions, and their right to form unions, bargain collectively
and to strike; defend the workers movement

IATF
- A task force organized by the chief executive of the Philippine government to
respond to issues related to the public health emergency in the country. Its
mandate is to prevent and /or minimize the local spread of Covid-19 virus in
the country.

DSWD
- Government agency that has direct mandate to distribute social assistance
like 4Ps.

MMDA
- performs planning, monitoring and coordinative functions, and in the process
exercises regulatory and supervisory authority over the delivery of metro-wide
services within Metro Manila.

GENDER EQUALITY - When people of all genders have equal rights,


responsibilities and opportunities.

Basic Human Rights - right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture,
freedom of opinion and expression, and right to work and education

Ecological Solid Waste Management Act – also known as Republic Act 9003
provides for a systematic comprehensive and ecological waste management
program to ensure the protection of public health and the environment.
