Strategic Location
The Maldives extends over 510 miles
(820 km) from north to south and 80
miles (130 km) from east to west. The
islands are strategically located in the
Indian Ocean, with the northernmost
atoll situated about 370 miles (600 km)
south-southwest of India, while the
central region, including the capital city
of Malé, is approximately 400 miles
(645 km) southwest of Sri Lanka. This
positioning places the Maldives along
key maritime trade routes connecting
Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

Tourist Attractions in Maldives
1. Hukuru Miskiy (Old Friday Mosque)
- also known as the Old Friday Mosque is one of the oldest and most ornate mosques
in the city of Malé, Kaafu Atoll, Maldives. Coral boulders of the genus Porites, found
throughout the archipelago, are the basic materials used for construction of this and
other mosques in the country because of its suitability. Although the coral is soft and
easily cut to size when wet, it makes sturdy building blocks when dry. The mosque was
added to the tentative UNESCO World Heritage cultural list in 2008 as unique
examples of sea-culture architecture.
2. Malè Friday Mosque (Grand Friday Mosque)
- Opened in 1984, the Grand Friday Mosque, as well as the Islamic Centre, was
named after Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu-Al-Auzam of the Maldives who
built the architectural masterpiece. The Islamic Centre consists of a three-
storey building, the main block of which holds the mosque which in turn can
accommodate around 5000 worshippers. The mosque is considered the biggest
in the Maldives and was built with the help of various places which brought in
their own speciality.
3. Banana Reef
- Banana Reef is one of the world's most popular dive sites which is located in
Maldives. It is also one of the oldest reefs discovered in the Maldives and is
adorned with stunning caves, majestic cliffs, beautiful coral growths and
powerful overhangs.
4. Maafushi Island
- A popular local island offering guesthouses, water sports, and cultural
experiences. It is one of the inhabited islands of Kaafu Atoll and the leading
local tourism island of the Maldives. The island's proximity to Malé and its
transport hubs has allowed Maafushi to become a popular destination for
tourists visiting local islands.
5. Addu Atoll
- Known for its unique heart-shaped
formation and vibrant marine
biodiversity. The islands are
protected from the storms and high
waves of the Indian Ocean by barrier
reefs. Coconut palms, the national
tree, are able to grow almost
everywhere on the islands of Addu
Atoll. There are small lakes,
wetlands, and marshy taro fields that
are unique to Addu Atoll.
6. Hanifaru Bay
- Hanifaru Bay is a UNESCO biosphere reserve in Baa Atoll in
the Maldives, which is legally designated as a Marine Protected
Area. There are strict regulations in place to protect and
preserve this amazing wonder.Hanifaru Bay is shaped like a
funnel that is about 1300 metres long.
7. National Museum
- With the purpose of preserving history and instilling patriotism among the people of
the Maldives, the museum has a large collection of historical artifacts, ranging from
stone objects to fragments of royal antiquities from the Buddhist era to the rule of
Islamic monarchs.
8. Vaadhoo Islands
- is one of the inhabited islands of Raa Atoll, Maldives. Famous for the
bioluminescent plankton (Redhan), an annual bioluminescent phenomenon
known as "The Sea of Stars" is visible from this island.
9. Villingili Island
- Home to luxury resorts and the tallest natural point in the Maldives. Villimalé is also
home to Liquid Water Sports, one of the few hydro sports hubs in Maldives. It actively

10. Sun Island
- A resort island known for its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and
