INTERNAL USE ONLY INSTRUCTIONS
WS15Q407, Issue 1, Page 2 / 2 + 9
Introduction
The enclosed instructions introduces a new way of monitoring the turbocharger impeller
and should be done during turbocharger maintenance. Measurements should be taken
at site or in the workshop to monitor change of dimensions of the impeller.
Instructions
The axial petalling measurement should be done between each vane of the impeller and
should be recorded to be able to compare the values at next inspection.
Following information should be recorded:
Engine number and engine type
Turbocharger serial number and model
Number of large vanes of the impeller
Recorded maximum petalling value between each blade
Largest impeller outer diameter (if the impeller has been disassembled from the
turbine shaft)
The reports should be sent to Napier: [email protected]

SERVICE BULLETIN
SB-357-397-CMWH-077-0
ADVISORY
Subject: IMPELLER CONDITION MONITORING
A. TURBOCHARGERS AFFECTED
This bulletin applies to all NA357 and NA397 turbochargers.
B. REASONS FOR BULLETIN
In order to minimise unplanned stoppages Napier recommended that in-situ impeller
diameter measurements be taken to assess their condition. It became clear while
obtaining these measurements, (Implementation of SB-357-397-CMWH-075-01), that
impeller diameter measurements in-situ are unreliable and prone to error.
During investigation of alternative methods (with in-situ turbochargers) we have
concluded that axial petalling(1) is a more reliable, and repeatable feature to measure.
(1)
Axial petalling inspections can be done without impeller removal but require removal
of the compressor (volute) insert and related parts - Air filter silencer (AFS) or side entry
casing (SEC) as applicable, and speed probe from the volute casing.

This bulletin defines the technique for determining axial petalling values (maximum
positive values) and applies to all personnel that may be engaged in the operation or
maintenance of these turbochargers.
Inspections will determine whether the impeller may continue service until scheduled
maintenance, the number of hours remaining before the next Impeller Condition
Monitoring (ICM), or if a workshop inspection of the impeller is required.
C. CHANGES / MODIFICATION
No parts need to be changed or modified but a dial test indicator (DTI) with suitable
attachments is essential to establish the petalling (positive) values between each
impeller vane.
D. DESCRIPTION - Disassembly, assessment and reassembly
Disassembly
1. Remove Air filter silencer (AFS) or Side entry casing (SEC).
2. Remove speed probe gland and disconnect probe from engine harness/clips.
SB-357-397-CMWH-077-02 Page 2 of 8
3. Remove the 8 screws and locking washers securing the volute insert and while
doing so fit the removal guide rods (three of located in NA3X7 turbocharger
toolkit) into three of the vacated tapped holes.
Caution: -
4. Remove volute insert (it may be necessary to use jacking points).
5. Mark position of adjustable shim and carefully remove.
6. Remove guide rods.

Assessment
7. Position the DTI magnetic base and align tip with either top or bottom of first cusp
8. Zero DTI - rotate impeller anti-clockwise.
Caution: -
Record only maximum positive (+) axial petalling.
10. Repeat for each section between vanes.
11. Establish maximum (positive) from step 10.

12. Use the recorded maximum value to evaluate the hours remaining before next in-
situ check is due by:
a. Less than +0.15mm impeller acceptable to continue service for another
12khrs or next service interval (whichever falls first).
b. Between +0.15mm +0.225mm acceptable to continue service for
another 6khrs or next service interval (whichever falls first).
c. Greater than +0.225mm and less than +0.3mm acceptable to continue
service for another 3khrs or next service interval (whichever falls first).
SB-357-397-CMWH-077-02 Page 6 of 8
d. Equal to or greater than +0.3mm not acceptable to continue service
requires removal for more detailed workshop inspection.
Caution: - Ensure number of hours until next inspection or service interval is
recorded.
Assembly
13. Assembly is the reverse of the disassembly procedure.
14. Feed speed probe cable through compressor delivery casing.
15. Fit guide rods.
16. Refit shim paying attention to original position.
Caution: -
17.
otherwise replace.
18. Refit volute insert.
19. Refit volute insert fasteners (while removing guide rods) and locking washers.
Caution: -
20. Torque setting of 120Nm to be evenly distributed.
21. Refit speed probe gland assembly taking care to not overtighten (10Nm).
22. Reconnect to engine harness/clips.
23. Refit AFS/SEC.
Caution: -

Implementation
This bulletin is graded as Advisory. It is advised that in-situ monitoring of turbochargers
may be carried to assess the impeller condition in advance of any workshop
maintenance. This Service Instruction takes precedence over related information
contained either within the corresponding Operator, Service or torque
manuals/material.
