Principles & Applications of Electricity

Class 13
Agenda
1. Take up Class 11 HW
2. Quiz 13
3. Lesson 13
• Combination circuits
• PhET simulation
• Power with V, I, and R
Combination Circuits
• Combination circuits
contain both series and
parallel circuits
• To calculate the current
and potential
difference across each
resistor, reduce the
resistors into a single,
equivalent-value
resistor
Recall:

Summary of Series Circuits Summary of Parallel Circuits

1 1 1 1 1
𝑅𝑇 = 𝑅1 + 𝑅2 + 𝑅3 + ⋯ 𝑅𝑛 = + + +⋯
𝑅𝑇 𝑅1 𝑅2 𝑅3 𝑅𝑛
𝑉𝑇 = 𝑉1 + 𝑉2 + 𝑉3 + ⋯ 𝑉𝑛
𝑉𝑇 = 𝑉1 = 𝑉2 = 𝑉3 = ⋯ 𝑉𝑛
𝐼𝑇 = 𝐼1 = 𝐼2 = 𝐼3 = ⋯ 𝐼𝑛
𝐼𝑇 = 𝐼1 + 𝐼2 + 𝐼3 + ⋯ 𝐼𝑛
Step 1: Assess which resistors are connected in
series and which resistors are connected in parallel.

R3 is connected in
series to R1 and R2

R1 and R2 are
connected in parallel
Step 2: Combine any parallel resistors into a single
equivalent resistor.
Combine R1 and R2 into a
single resistor R1 // R2

1 1 1
= +
𝑅1 //𝑅2 𝑅1 𝑅2
1 1 1
= +
𝑅1 //𝑅2 20 30
𝑹𝟏 //𝑹𝟐 = 𝟏𝟐𝜴
Step 3: Combine any series resistors into a single
equivalent resistor.

R3 is connected in Combine R3 and R1 // R2

series to R1 // R2 into a single resistor RT

𝑅𝑇 = 12 + 8
𝑹𝑻 = 𝟐𝟎 𝜴
Step 4: Calculate the total current from the total
voltage and the total resistance.

Find IT

𝑉𝑇
𝐼𝑇 =
𝑅𝑇
60𝑉
𝐼𝑇 =
20Ω
𝑰𝑻 = 𝟑 𝑨
Step 5: Recall that IT
stays the same
through a series I3 V3
circuit. 3 A 24 V

Split the RT back into

its previous form and
insert the IT for all I1//I2 V1//V2
resistors in series. 3 A 36 V

Find V using Ohm’s

Law.
Step 6: Recall that V
stays the same
through a parallel I3 V3
3 A 24 V
circuit.
Split the R1 // R2 back
into its previous form
and insert the V for
all resistors in
parallel.
Find I using Ohm’s
Law. V1 I1 V2 I2
36 V 1.8 A 36 V 1.2 A
Checkpoint
Find the V and I
for each of the
resistors in this
combination
circuit.
Checkpoint
Find the V and I for
each of the resistors
in this combination
circuit.
Checkpoint

each of the resistors
in this combination
circuit.

Electrical Power Revisited
• Electrical power is the rate at which electrical
energy is produced or used; unit is watt (W)
• Can also be expressed in relation to current, potential
difference, and resistance

𝑉 2 P

𝑃 = 𝑉𝐼 = 𝐼 𝑅 =
𝑅 I V
Checkpoint
A handheld electric fan operates on a 3.00V battery.
If the power generated by the fan is 2.24W, what is
the current supplied by the battery?
Checkpoint
A turkey is cooked in the oven for 4.00h. Assume
that the oven draws a current of 20.0A and operates
at a voltage of 220V. If electrical energy costs
$0.082/kW∙h, how much does it cost to cook the
turkey?
