4. Establishes minimum conditions for authorizing
maintenance activities within AR-RAZI facilities.
5. Serves as an official written record of conditions and
requirements for maintenance work.
6. Designed to prevent accidents by giving the owner
control over work activities taking place in their area and
4 to assure safe work practices

Welding work Safety

• Safety glasses and Welding face shield should
ALWAYS be worn.
• Say “cover” before you start to weld.
• DO NOT run over electrode cables.
• NEVER weld while standing in water.
• Handle hot metal with tongs, not gloves.
• Welding should be done in well ventilated areas.
• Never weld near combustible materials.

13 No. 13
Health, Safety, Security & Environment Department

Welding work Safety (continued)

• Dispose hot electrode stubs in a fire proof container
only!
• Never let the electrode holder touch water.
• The lens specification depends upon the amperage
used and the type of welding.
• Check the helmet lens for cracks.
• Do not place the electrode holder on the table,
between your knees, or under your arm.

14 No. 14
Health, Safety, Security & Environment Department

Welding work Safety (continued)

• Don’t stand on grounded metal while welding.
• Never watch welding without a helmet.
• Welding on closed containers could be dangerous.
• If electrode sticks, do not raise helmet. Turn machine off
first.

Health, Safety, Security & Environment Department

Installation and Maintenance of Welding

Machines
• Cables must be maintained and conductors well
insulated
• Properly route the cables to avoid tripping hazard.
• Provide means of protection such as sleeves, ramps
when cables are crossing the road.

Note: Do not ground to the existing plant facility

such as vessel, equipment.

Storage of Oxy – Acetylene Gas Cylinders

• Storage area must be well ventilated

• Cylinders must be at least 20 feet from
combustibles
• Valves must be closed
• Valve protection must be in place
• Cylinders must be stored in upright position
• Oxygen must be at least 20 feet from fuel gas or 5
feet with a 1/2 hour fire barrier

What Is Fire:
Fire is a very rapid chemical reaction between oxygen and a
combustible material, which results in the release of heat,
light, flames, and smoke.

For fire to exist, the following four elements must be present

at the same time:
 Enough “oxygen” to sustain combustion;
 Enough “heat” to raise the material to its ignition
temperature;
 Some sort of “fuel” or combustible material; and
 The chemical reaction that is fire.

20 No. 20
Health, Safety, Security & Environment Department
What is Fire Triangle?
• Three components (Oxygen,
Heat & Fuel)
• Need all three components
to start a fire
• Fire extinguishers remove
one or more of the
components

Fire Safety, at its most basic, is based upon the

principle of keeping fuel sources and ignition sources
separate.

Fire Extinguishers - Water

• Red body
• Suitable for use on Class A Fires,
wood and paper etc.
• Not suitable for combustible liquids,
cooking fats etc.
• Not safe to use on fires involving
electricity
• Extinguishes by cooling

25 No. 25

Fire Extinguishers - Foam

• Cream body (Old type) or Red Body

with Cream label
• Suitable for Class A and B Fires.
• Not suitable for use on fires
involving electricity
• Extinguishes by cooling and sealing
the surface of a burning liquid

Fire Extinguishers - Powder

• Blue body (Old type) or Red body

with blue label.
• Best on Class B fires but safe to
use on any type of fire.
• Works by chemically interfering
with the combustion reaction

Fire Extinguishers -Carbon Dioxide

• Black body (Old type) or red body

with black label (New type)
• Best on Class B and C fires but safe
to use on any type of fire
