RC I Assignment
Assignment:
▪ Group-1: Theory all & Workout #1 & #4
▪ Group-2: Theory all & Workout #3 & #5
▪ Group-3: Theory all & Workout #2 & #6
Note: there will be a presentation; so, a random person will present the assignment
Theory/Conceptual
1. Explain what limit state means in ES EN 1992 and list and explain ultimate limit
state & serviceability limit state major concern with a justification.
2. Explain the type of flexural failures in RC members. And state the desirable failure
type that we demand in designing RC members.
3. What are the major factors that affect shear strength of RC member?
4. In what kind of particular cases do we prefer two-way slab over ribbed slab?
5. Describe the slab type that will be used for a large spanned members or when we
need a huge space without a frequent column obstruction.
6. How do we detail reinforcement bars in one-way and two-way solid slab?
7. Draw a typical beam and show the zone of flexural crack, combined flexure – shear
crack, and shear crack. Explain the difference between shear and flexural cracks?
8. What is the point of limiting reinforcement area (As,min & As,max) and spacing of
reinforcement (Smin & Smax) according to ES EN 1992?
Workout (up to structural detailing)
1. An 8m span 250X400 mm sized simply supported rectangular beam is subjected
to characteristic live load of 15 kN/m in addition to self-weight. Design the beam
for shear considering C25/30 class of concrete and S400 grade of reinforcement
steel, and taking ϕ8 mm diameter bar for shear reinforcement. Take the column
dimension as 300X300mm.
2. A 6m span simply supported beam is subjected to 35 kN/m design load. The beam
is 300mm wide and 450 mm deep. Use C25/30 and S500 material strength.
Assume ϕ8 for shear reinforcement and the concrete cover to reinforcement is 25
mm. The beam is supported by 300X300 mm column and also the beam is
reinforced for flexure 2ϕ16 near the support and 4ϕ16 at the mid span. Determine
the necessary shear reinforcement?
3. A fixed supported beam with 4m span length is subjected to 35 KN/m design load.
The beam is 250 mm wide and 450 mm deep. The material used for the design are
C25/30 and S400. If the cover to reinforcement and the diameter of main bar are
30 mm and 16 mm respectively, determine the necessary shear reinforcement. The
beam is supported by 300X300 mm column.

5. Design the 160 mm thick slab system where it consists of a series of slabs shown
in the figure below which is subjected to 1.5kN/m2 characteristic permanent load
from floor finishing and 3kN/m2 live load. Use C25/30 & S400 material strength and
assume the beam have an overall depth of 50cm. For your design use 10 mm
diameter bars for main reinforcement.
6. A 180 mm depth slab system of a G+3 mix used building is shown in Figure
below and you are required to analyse & design of the floor slab subjected to a
gravity loads (dead and live load).
Assumptions
▪ Use material, concrete C25/30 and steel grade S400
