THE GOOD LIFE
SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY
A society may distinguish
GOOD LIVES if those are
characterized by:
fulfillment of basic needs
satisfaction of desires and aspirations
accomplishment of a person purpose and
mission
life that has a social meaning
ARISTOTLE AND THE GOOD LIFE
The “highest good” means the ultimate meaning
of a person’s life. This meaning should be
spread over a person’s whole life.
Aristotle focused on the big things, which are
conclusive of a person’s life existence.
ARISTOTLE’S INSIGHTS INTO THE
IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF
“GOOD LIFE” INCLUDE:
maximal use of potential
intellectual virtues
virtue of character
guided by a well-ordered state
EUDAIMONIA
No “one-size-fits-all” formula
MONEY AND SUCCESS
PLEASURE
RELATIONSHIPS
REASON AND VIRTUES
Money is always acquired for the
purpose of attaining something else-- a
means to an end, thus money cannot be

MONEY & the highest good.

However, a good life should not be

SUCCESS
governed by great hardships, including
deprivation of assets, like money and
property.
Success cannot also be considered the
highest good because it is too dependent
on some other people's views.
Aristotle valued pleasure because as an
embodied creature, appreciation of bodily
desires can help in attaining our pursuit
of a good life. However, he still did not
consider it as the highest good because

PLEASURE excessive indulgence in a pleasurable

situation damages and distracts the
person's worthwhile pursuit.
Aristotelian principle requires balance
between value and pleasure to attain
good life.
Relationship is very essential but
according to Aristotle, it is still not the
highest good a person should pursue.
There are three types of relationships
recognized by Aristotle:
RELATIONSHIPS mutual admiration;
lasts as far as either of them
provides some good or pleasure; and
A relationship that is solid and,
therefore, most important
The main good for a human being is
reason since it is the characteristic
human capacity, the one we do not share

REASON & with any other animals.

Aristotle divided reason into theoretical

VIRTUES (concerning the contemplation of

unchangeable truths) and practical (to
do with choosing wisely in the sphere of
what can be changed).
Theoretical and practical reasons are a
central part of the good life. But in order
REASON & to flourish as human beings, we need to
develop the virtues of character that
VIRTUES allow us to feel and act according to
reason.
THE PHILOSOPHIES BETWEEN
THE GOOD AND THE RIGHT
How can a good life be considered “good” if
it is incomprehensible and unreachable?
HEDONISM
STOICISM
HUMANISM
MATERIALISM
spearheaded by Epicurus
"good life" is a life with
acquisition and appreciation of
pleasure

HEDONISM experience of pleasure and

absence of pain are the ultimate
central values → considered the
universal objects of human
desire
Getting pleasure from an object
or activity is the key
Although they focus on

HEDONISM pleasures, hedonists still

recommend pleasures attained
through virtuous means
Their mantra: "Eat, drink, and be
merry for tomorrow we die"
founded by Zeno of Citium
in Greece during the 3rd
century

STOICISM believes that virtue and the

ability to develop reasons
are both the highest good of
man
believes in the following:
virtue and the ability to develop
reasons are sufficient for happiness
good life is free from all passions that
are intrinsically troubling and

STOICISM detrimental to the soul

the noble goal for good life is vitally
urgent
focusing on smaller "insignificant"
wins is more important than aspiring
for an end goal.
philosophy coined by theologian
Friedrich Niethammer
believes that humans are ultimately

HUMANISM responsible for their actions toward

themselves and to their society
to achieve a good life requires
rational thinking about what is right
and wrong
Humanists would try doing the right
things because they are guided by the
possible consequences of their
actions.

HUMANISM
Humanists simply believe on "being
good without God"
they rely on science and human
experiences in answering life
problems.
their philosophy is bounded by reason
and critical thinking.
began with Leucippus and Democritus
also called physicalism or atomism,
wherein everything is thought to be
made up of smooth, round,
MATERIALISM "uncuttable", atomos (Greek word
which means indivisible)
These atoms randomly come together
to form things, including human and
other living things.
As made up of atoms, humans do
not need to use inanimate beings as
foundations of happiness and good
life.
Materialism emphasizes that
MATERIALISM humans are made up of atoms, so
there is no need for lifeless
foundations of happiness and good
life.
