TEXTBOOK
There is no assigned textbook; students will have access to presentations through Blackboard.

MECH 401- Fall 2024
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Students will:
• Learn various experimentation techniques and methods and computerized data acquisition.
• Describe the stages of the signal chain, identify the result of each stage, and implement a
measurement system.
• Identify types of electrical signals (currents, voltages, and resistances) and configure a
measurement system to measure these signals
• Measure physical phenomena, digitizing an electrical signal
• Learn how to set-up an experiment; process and analyze data; display and evaluate results.
• Experience teamwork and collaboration with peers, take responsibility, evaluate peers, present
technical data.

LAB SESSIONS, GROUP SELECTION, AND REPORTS

• There will be a total of 6 different experiments that will be covered in 9 weeks. One of the
experiments will span 3 weeks, while the remaining experiments will each take 1 week.
• Students are expected to form groups of 5. Groups must be finalized by the end of the second
week. You should submit your group composition through the “Lab Groups” link provided in
the course web page.
• In your future careers, you will often encounter situations where teamwork and conflict
resolution are essential skills. One of the aims of this course is to prepare you for such
challenges. It is your sole responsibility to select group members and resolve any conflicts
within the group. No changes will be allowed after the second week of the course. All members
will receive the same grade for the report and presentation, regardless of individual
contribution. Complaints about unequal participation will not be considered, and the group as
a whole is responsible for managing its workload.
• Attendance in all lab sessions is mandatory. Once assigned to a specific lab hour, students are
not permitted to change their assigned lab time. Missing two lab sessions without a valid
medical report from the university’s medical center or dean's permission will result in an
automatic F for the lab component of the course. Additionally, missing the first lab session
without a valid excuse will result in a zero for the associated quiz, report, and one
presentation grade.
• There will be pre-lab quiz. The quiz will take place during the first 5 minutes of the lab session.
If you are late or miss the quiz, you will not be allowed to take it later.
• There will be report assignments. A lab report template will be provided in the course web
page. Each group will be asked to turn in reports for each experiment 1 week after the
experiment by submitting through Blackboard platform. Experiment and lab report due dates
are available on the course web page. Late reports will be penalized by a deduction of 30%
of the total possible points per day late.
• There are no make-ups for the experiments, lab reports, and pre-lab quizzes.
• Plagiarizing or copying another’s work will not be tolerated.

PRESENTATIONS
• Each group will present two experiments during the semester.

2
MECH 401- Fall 2024
• We will assign which experiments each group needs to present, and a calendar will be provided
once lab groups are set. A rubric for evaluation will be introduced during the lectures to ensure
transparency and fairness in grading.
• It is the responsibility of the group to decide who will present. There will be no individual
grading for presentations; the entire group will receive the same grade. Therefore, it is
important to select your group carefully and clarify presentation responsibilities early on to
avoid potential conflicts.
• Failure to show up for the presentation will result in a direct 0 for the entire group.

BONUS PROJECTS: RESEARCH AND SETUP IMPROVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

MECHLAB houses state-of-the-art equipment commonly used in both industry and research
institutes, offering a unique opportunity to gain practical experience with advanced measurement
and testing technology. We will offer bonus projects during the semester for individual students
(not groups) who can contribute to ongoing research or assist in improving the experimental setups
outside of lab and class hours, meaning this will require extra time that you need to dedicate. These
projects will give you the opportunity to spend more time with the measurement equipment and
engage with research assistants (master’s and doctoral students), gaining valuable hands-on
experience. For example, some students could help with ultrasound measurements or work on
multi-beam development in a shaker-laser Doppler vibrometer setup. These projects can provide
valuable research experience and, depending on your performance and participation, may result in
bonus points. If you're interested, please consider how you could contribute and reach out to Dr.
Beker via email by the end of the 3rd week (Nov 21, 2024). Projects will be assigned on a first-
come, first-served basis.

OFFICE HOURS
• Time: By appointment via email.

EVALUATION
Lab Quizzes (2 pts x 6) + Lab Reports (8 pts x 6) 60%
Presentations (10 pts x 2) 20%
Final exam (20 pts) 20%
Bonus (5 pts) 5%

LAB SCHEDULE
Check course website for more details.

GRADING AND NORMALIZATION

Final grades will be evaluated using Z-transform normalization procedure. First, all your grades
will be normalized so that the overall distribution of grades has an average of 0 and a standard
deviation of 1. Using this procedure, one can easily determine his/her standing in the class which
simplifies the grading. Grades will be assigned according to how far above or below your final
Z-score ends up. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_score)

3
MECH 401- Fall 2024
Example: You can calculate your Z-score for each evaluation criteria grade:

𝐺𝑖 − 𝐺𝑖_𝑎𝑣𝑒
𝑍𝑖 =
𝜎𝐺_𝑖

𝑂𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑙𝑙 = 0.525 × 𝑍1 + 0.20 × 𝑍2 + 0.325 × 𝑍3

𝑂𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑙𝑙 − 𝑂𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑣𝑒
𝑍𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑙𝑙 =
𝜎𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑙𝑙
