UNIT 8: NEW WAYS TO LEARN


LESSON 1: GETTING STARTED
1. Warm-up and lead-in:
- use pictures in textbook and another picture demonstrating traditional learning)
+ guide Ss through asking more picture-related questions
- explain the title of the unit
- introduce the conversation ( the main idea & context)
2. Listen and read
- listen
- read the conversation and answer questions
3. Teach vocabulary
- check Ss’ conprehension by confirming the Vietnamese meanings of those words
4. Read the conversation aloud
- summarise the conversation by drawing a mindmap in front of the class
- ask Ss about basic questions to check their undestading about the content of the
conversation
5. Assign homework
LESSON 3: READING
1. Warm-up
- use Questions:
“Learning face-to-face is better than learning online”
“I feel more interested in learning in a classroom than online”
“Using technology helps me understand things more easily”
“ I feel comfortable asking questions in online classroom”
“ Learning online is easier and more flexible than learning in a classroom”
- Ss stand up and say “yes” if agree, sit down and say “no” if disagree
- lead in “ ways of learning”
2. Reading 1
- let Ss play a game on Baamboozle to review vocabulary before reading
- explain headings
- ask Ss to read and match
- check their answers ( Ss have to give evidence)
3. Reading 2
- ask Ss to read statements and underline keywords
- Ss read the text (skimming and scanning)
- check carefully and explain vocabulary if necessary
4. Post reading
- quickly check as a whole class by askiing several questions
5. Assign HW
LESSON 4: SPEAKING (page 90)
1. Warm up: Activity 1 in textbook
- T prepares cards that 6 given statements are written on
- T devide the class into 4 groups. Each group has 6 cards. Each group has to
identify which one is advantage or disadvantage and clue the card on the advantage
or disadvantage columns on the board.
- the team which is done first is the winner.
2. Activiy 2
- help Ss to construct the same table
- let Ss practice with this table with teacher’s help
- let some Ss speak about their own ideas

3. Students work in groups. Replace the activity below with activity with cards.

- T uses 6 cards with 6 different statements.


- The teacher asked the students to sit in groups of 2 tables and sit opposite each
other. The students sitting at the table opposite the teacher will look at the card that
T is showing and explain to their partners sitting at opposite side. Take it in turn
when teacher moves to the opposite.
4. Assign homework
LESSON 5: LISTENING
1. Warm-up:
- review vocabulary on Kahoot ( 4 options will be represented by 4 shapes so that
Ss can use their hands to show the shapes, making it more engaging because Ss
have chance to move their bodies)
2. Activity 1:
- check the answers in front of the class
- ask Ss several questions in order to help them visualise what they are going to
listen to
3. Activity 2
- read 2 questions and visualise context
- listen and answer the 2 questions
- listen again and take notes
- check answers with evidence
4. Activity 3
- guide Ss through asking them to decide what kinds of information are needed in
the blanks
- underline keywords
- Listen
- listen again to check answers
5. Post-listening
- quickly check by asking questions
LESSON 6: WRITING
1. Warm-up: Mentimeter ( write all ways of learning that you know)
2. Activity 1:
- check the statements in front of the class
- synthesize by drawing a mindmap
3. Activity 2
- utilize ideas in Warm-up activity
- write a topic sentence as a whole class activity
- write sample sentences for the first benefit and help Ss to write concluding
sentence
- let Ss write the second benefit
- give feedback
4. Activity 3
- ask Ss to use available expressions in the textbook and complete their writing
- give feedback
- ask simple questions to make sure Ss understand how to write such a paragraph

LESSON 7: COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE/ CLIL


1. Warm-up:

- list activities and facilities in the video
2. Culture
- review the list of activities in warm-up section
- lead in to “ modern school”
- read
- read questions and underline keywords
- answer questions
- check Ss’ answer ( Ss have to give evidence)
- quickly check by asking simple questions to make sure Ss comprehend the
reading text
- draw a mindmap
3. Everyday English
- Activity 1:
+ explain context
+ guess the answers as a whole class activity
+ listen
+ Ss answer
+ check their answers and find instruction language
+ synthesize intruction language on the board
- Activity 2
+ set context for Ss
+ Ss work in pairs
+ Ss make their own conversations
4. Consolidate and assign homework
