1. In orthogonal cutting of a material with shear strength 200 N/mm2, the following data
is obtained, rake angle 10o, uncut chip thickness 0.22 mm, width of chip is 2 mm and
chip thickness ratio 0.45. Determine shear angle, cutting forces and resultant force on
the tool.
2. In a machining operation that approximates orthogonal cutting, the cutting tool has a
rake angle of 12o. The chip thickness before the cut is 0.3 mm and the chip thickness
after the cut is 0.65 mm. Calculate the shear plane angle, friction angle and the shear
strain in the operation.
3. The following data relate to orthogonal cutting process: Obtained chip thickness 0.85
mm, breadth of cut 2.5 mm, depth of cut 0.3 mm, tool rake angle 8o, tangential force
2kN, Feed force 200 N. Determine the coefficient of friction between tool and chip and
Shear stress of the material.
4. A mild steel is being machined by two different tool A and B under identical machining
conditions. The tool life equation for cutting tool A is VT0.31 = 34.3 and for cutting tool
B is VT0.43 = 89.5. Where V and T are in m/sec and sec. respectively. Determine the
cutting speed above which tool B will give a better tool life.
5. Using Taylor equation, calculate the percentage increase in tool life when cutting speed
is reduced by 50%. Use n = 0.5, C = 400.
6. A WC cutting tool machining MS raw material gave a life between regrinds of 100 min.
when operating at 80 m/min. and 33 min. when operating at 100 m/min. Determine the
value of the index and the constant in tool life equation.
