Unit 4, Relations and Functions,

Relations compare the values of two variables, (X, and Y) using ordered pairs
- Ordered Pairs: (X,Y)
- Examples: (3,4) (10,-12) (0,0) - Center of Graph

4 Ways to Represent.
- Ordered pairs
- Graph
- Tables
- Mapping

Examples
Table

X Y

0 1

2 4

-3 -6

-4 10

9 -3

13 6

5 -10

12 16
Mapping

X Y

0 1
2 4
-3 -6
-4 10

Equation

Y=X+1

What makes it a Function?

Domain - All X Values

Range - All Y Values

Function - Each Value in the domain maps to only ONE value in the range

Example: is it a function?

‘ X X

Function NOT a function

No x-value repeated Every x-value repeated

X Y

-1 0

-2 1

-3 4

-3 6

NOT a function, -3 repeated

(0,1) (-3,7) (7,-3), (10,11)

Function, every x has one y.
Function Notation.
F(x) means “f of x”
AKA “function of x”
We also use g(x) and h(x)

f(x) is the same as y

y=x+1

f(x)=x+1

Are the same.

f(x) - x+1, Find F 3

F (3) = 3+1

F (3) = 4

Only work on right side, give answer in function notation.

*F(3) means X=3

Graphing Functions

Key Pieces, Intercepts, Slopes, is Graph a Function

Interceps, Where the graph crosses the x and y Axis

Slope, The direction or shape of a graph.

Vertical Line Test, test we use to tell wether a graph is a function

X intercept
Where the graph crosses the X-Axis
Y=0
(X,0)

Y Intercept
Where the graph crosses the Y-Axis
X=0
(0,Y)

Slope

Y2-Y1
---------
X2 -X1

Comes from (X,Y) and (X2, Y2)

We can use any two points from the graph
Rise
------ Use on graph
Run

Change of Y divided by Change of X

Change of Y

Change of X
