The components of the ecosystem

The Catena-X ecosystem consists of three principal components: the Association Catena-X e.V., the “Development Environment” and
the “Operating Environment”.

The Catena-X e.V. association performs central tasks, such as the certification of the services offered/used and the governance of the
ecosystem. To this end, it publishes standards for generic core services, enabling/enablement services, and business applications.

In the “Operating Environment”, the certified services that comply with the standards are operated and offered by the various providers.
These also include open source and commercial services.
At the end of January 2023, Cofinity-X was founded as the first company selected to operate the Catena-X Automotive Network
(pictured is the magenta circle within the Operating Environment).

ƒ Business applications that implement specific services (commercial or open source)

Enablement services

The provision of enablement services, on the other hand, is decentralized. All participants in the ecosystem are responsible for connec-
ting to the platform in accordance with the set standards. This involves connecting existing legacy systems, for example. The basis for
this is the Eclipse Data Space Connector (EDC). It is also an important piece in the mosaic to ensure data sovereignty and interoperability
for the participant.

EDC
The Eclipse Data Room Connector (EDC) provides a identity, data catalog and transmission technologies. This
connector framework for sovereign, cross-organizational allows compliance, policy and control functions across the
data exchange. The framework provides modules for data entire network. Subscribers can either implement the EDC

Example:
Catena-X impulses for the circular economy

Circular economy, i.e. the (reprocessing and) reuse of used

components and products, is one of the most important
topics for meeting the global sustainability goals. Beyond
that the circular economy can also make important contribu-
tions to satisfying the manufacturing industry's hunger for
raw materials (over 100 billion tons annually, and rising3) and
solving the problems with global supply chains (e.g. raw
material bottlenecks).

Given its importance, it is incomprehensible that the topic is

still badly neglected: According to a recent World Bank report
(December 2022), even in Europe, the pioneer of the circular
economy, 87 percent of resource consumption comes from
primary materials. Not even ten percent result from
recycling (8.6 %). Without a rapid scaling up of opportunities
and recycling capabilities, a circular economy will remain only
a pipe dream.

Catena-X offers companies in the circular economy an excel-

lent platform for new (digitalized) business models. With
access to the sovereign data space, companies at the end of
the value chain gain full transparency over raw materials used
in vehicles (or machines). These can be specifically reprocessed
and made available to the manufacturing industry, which
reduces the need for primary raw materials.

A concrete initiative of the circular economy is the “Battery

Passport4”, which was developed as a response to the EU
Battery Regulation. The Battery Passport is intended to make
the complete life cycle of batteries transparent and to extend it.
The recycling of the raw materials, materials and components
shall be promoted.

Roles in the Catena-X ecosystem

In total, there will be seven different roles of contributors in the Catena-X ecosystem. T-Systems will also be present in some roles,
e.g., enablement service provider and core service provider:

Core service providers (sections A and B) that provide core platform services. They can also act as orchestrators,
1 enabling interoperability of Catena-X with other data spaces/ecosystems.

2 Enablement service providers operate services that connect data suppliers and customers (via EDC and SDE).

3 Business application providers offering their services on the marketplace (supply side).

Onboarding service providers take care of the “creation” of new contributors and their user identities in the network.
4 Often they also offer the connection to Catena-X as a continuous managed service.

5 Consulting providers advise companies on how to get started with Catena-X.

6 Data providers and data consumers represent the users of the platform.

How companies can jump on

The seven roles provide each company with an option to participate in the ecosystem.
T-Systems currently sees two relevant perspectives for most companies in the automotive
environment: “be prepared” and “get connected”5.

Six examples highlight how companies can solve basic Catena-X questions. In the
first quarter of 2023, no providers have been finally certified, but the first services
are in the Catena-X certification process.

information models specified by Catena-X. Catena-X offers the recycler a way to put its business model on a
new foundation. With the automotive network enabling the sove-
reign sharing of data along the value chain, LRP employees have
access to all the information they need to make a decision at the
push of a button.

The first step to participate in Catena-X: The company must be

technically connected to the ecosystem. For LRP, this means that
the ERP system (ODOO) must be made fit for data exchange. The
data from various sources must be made available automatically,
and the ERP system must “speak” Catena-X, i.e. it must work
compatible with the platform's data standard.

Together with T-Systems, the company jumped on Catena-X. This

required two efforts: First, the format of the backend data was
“mapped” to the requirements of Catena-X. On the other hand, the
partners introduced BASE-X, which connects the ERP system to
Catena-X via the EDC. This allows full access to the resources of
the automotive network. The procedure followed Catena-X's best
practice process: after onboarding or registration on the platform,
the app onboarding took place. In this case, the subscription to the
Material Pass, Dismantling Dashboard and Marketplace services.
With the EDC and Digital Twin set up, access to data or applica-
tions provided on Catena-X was possible. BASE-X ensures that the
LRP fully complies with the platform's standards. The company is
thus 100 percent “Catena-X ready” and can now take the next step
for its business.

4 Backend integration of legacy systems for large enterprises

In our view, standardized offerings such as SDE and BASE-X often

cannot meet the needs of large companies. Here, more complex Catena-X
backend integrations are necessary so that, for example, the data
for calculating a carbon footprint in a vehicle can be provided. EDC
