An Intelligent Online Shopping Using Chatbot Artificial Intelligence
An Intelligent Online Shopping Using Chatbot Artificial Intelligence
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Online shopping is the process consumers go through to purchase products or services over
the internet. An online shop, e-shop, e-store, internet shop, webshop, webstore, online store,
or virtual store cause the physical analogy of buying products or services at a bricks-and-
mortar retailer or in a shopping mall.
Artificial Intelligence (or AI) is the human-like intelligence, judgement, learning, and
1
awareness exhibited by machines, along with the branches of computer science and
engineering that seek to create intelligent machines.
Chatbot (AI) the first chatbot was made in the year 1966 at the MIT AI laboratory, named
Eliza whose purpose was to give an accurate simulation of a human conversation. It was a
simple program designed to impersonate a psychotherapist and give out predefined responses
to user queries. However, the code base was exhaustive enough to take into account several
possible queries and the chatbot was capable of passing the Turing Test, a test designed to
check out whether a computer program could pass as an actual human being or not.
The aim of this study is to design and implement artificial intelligent chatbot for online
shopping. The web based program developed in this research essentially provides all the
necessary marketing services and operations which will help increase their operations based
on sales and services.
2
(i) To conduct review on the existing system
(ii) To design a system that will handle the customers’ needs
(iii) To develop and model an intelligent chatbot in Ecommerce for online shopping
(iv) To implement the model in Ecommerce into the system
(v) To evaluate the performance of the online shopping system
Buying and selling is very important to our everyday life, its very important that we humans
have to market what we have like goods and services to other people that needs it, also
purchase what we are lacking. Marketing is highly regarded everywhere in the whole parts of
the world. The following are some significance of this study:
(i) The secured site for electronic commerce will help the populace people to get rid
of risk in carrying cash around and the convenience of shopping anytime of the
day.
(ii) It will reduce the risk of transportation, since the customer does not have to travel
far to shop for any items or goods.
(iii) It will reduce the risk of authentication of the product and improved business
transaction as customers are now sure of the originality of the product they
purchased.
This project looks into the processes involved in marketing of goods and services in the
marketplace. The researchers concentrated on the operation going on the general marketing
activities like sales, management of stocks, pricing and registering of customers, security and
policy guiding sales.
Some of the constraints that may have in one-way or another affected the outcome of this
work include:
(i) Resources: Due to the complex and insecurity associated with human factors
3
during this research work, personnel who are used to the manual system perhaps
for fear of losing their jobs have been reserved in relinquishing all necessary
information to make this project an enticingly extensive one.
(ii) Time: Due to time allowed for this project work, as a student was limited to come
up with a reasonable work within the stipulated time.
(iii) Power: Availability of stable, efficient and reliable power supply was also a major
limitation of this project as it had to be suspended several times during design and
testing stages.

(x) Banner: An advertisement or image displayed on one or more websites to attract
visitors to your site.
CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW
The beginnings of e-commerce can be traced to the 1960s, when businesses started using
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) to share business documents with other companies. In
1979, the American National Standards Institute developed ASC X12 as a universal standard
for businesses to share documents through electronic networks. After the number of
individual users sharing electronic documents with each other grew in the 1980s, in the rise
of eBay and Amazon revolutionized the e-commerce industry. Consumers can now purchase
endless amounts of items online, both from typical brick and mortar stores with e-commerce
capabilities and one another (Sachin Srivastava, 2018).

Modern electronic commerce typically uses the World Wide Web for at least one part of the
transaction's life cycle although it may also use other technologies such as e-mail (Wikipedia
2018). Typical e-commerce transactions include the purchase of online books (such
as Amazon) and music purchases (music download in the form of digital distribution such
as iTunes Store), and to a less extent, customized/personalized online liquor
store inventory services. There are three areas of e-commerce: online retailing, electronic
markets, and online auctions. E-commerce is supported by electronic business (Wikipedia).
6
Some common applications related to electronic commerce are:
(i) B2B e-commerce (business-to-business): This is the sale of goods or services between
businesses via an online sales portal.
(iv) Digital Wallet: These refers to an electronic device or online service that allows an
individual to make electronic transactions.
In 2010, the United Kingdom had the highest per capita e-commerce spending in the
world. As of 2013, the Czech Republic was the European country where e-commerce delivers
the biggest contribution to the enterprises´ total revenue. Almost a quarter (24%) of the
country's total turnover is generated via the online channel. Among emerging economies,
China's e-commerce presence continues to expand every year. With 668 million Internet
users, China's online shopping sales reached $253 billion in the first half of 2015, accounting
for 10% of total Chinese consumer retail sales in that period. The Chinese retailers have been
able to help consumers feel more comfortable shopping online. E-commerce transactions
between China and other countries increased 32% to 2.3 trillion yuan ($375.8 billion) in 2012
and accounted for 9.6% of China's total international trade. In 2013, Alibaba had an e-
commerce market share of 80% in China. In 2014, there were 600 million Internet users in
China (twice as many as in the US), making it the world's biggest online market. China is
also the largest e-commerce market in the world by value of sales, with an estimated US$899
billion in 2016.
The rate of growth of the number of internet users in the Arab countries has been rapid –
7
13.1% in 2015. A significant portion of the e-commerce market in the Middle East comprises
people in the 30–34 year age group. Egypt has the largest number of internet users in the
region, followed by Saudi Arabia and Morocco; these constitute 3/4th of the region's share.
Yet, internet penetration is low: 35% in Egypt and 65% in Saudi Arabia.
E-commerce has become an important tool for small and large businesses worldwide, not
only to sell to customers, but also to engage them.
Mobile devices are playing an increasing role in the mix of e-commerce, this is also
commonly called mobile commerce, or m-commerce. In 2014, one estimate saw purchases
made on mobile devices making up 25% of the market by 2017.
For traditional businesses, one research stated that information technology and cross-border
e-commerce is a good opportunity for the rapid development and growth of enterprises. Many
companies have invested enormous volume of investment in mobile applications. The
DeLone and McLean Model stated that three perspectives contribute to a successful e-
business: information system quality, service quality and users' satisfaction. There is no limit
of time and space, there are more opportunities to reach out to customers around the world,
and to cut down unnecessary intermediate links, thereby reducing the cost price, and can
benefit from one on one large customer data analysis, to achieve a high degree of personal
customization strategic plan, in order to fully enhance the core competitiveness of the
products in company.
E-commerce markets are growing at noticeable rates. The online market is expected to grow
by 56% in 2015–2020. In 2017, retail e-commerce sales worldwide amounted to 2.3 trillion
US dollars and e-retail revenues are projected to grow to 4.88 trillion US dollars in
2021. Traditional markets are only expected 2% growth during the same time. Brick and
mortar retailers are struggling because of online retailer's ability to offer lower prices and
higher efficiency. Many larger retailers are able to maintain a presence offline and online by
8
linking physical and online offerings.
There are two ways for marketers to conduct business through e-commerce: fully online or
online along with a brick and mortar store. Online marketers can offer lower prices, greater
product selection, and high efficiency rates. Many customers prefer online markets if the
products can be delivered quickly at relatively low price. However, online retailers cannot
offer the physical experience that traditional retailers can. It can be difficult to judge the
quality of a product without the physical experience, which may cause customers to
experience product or seller uncertainty. Another issue regarding the online market is
concerns about the security of online transactions. Many customers remain loyal to well-
known retailers because of this issue. Security is a primary problem for e-commerce in
developed and developing countries. E-commerce security is protecting business' websites
and costumers from unauthorized access, use, alteration, or destruction. The type of threats
include: malicious codes, unwanted programs (ad ware, spyware), phishing, hacking,
and cyber vandalism. E-commerce websites use different tools to avert security threats. These
tools include firewalls, encryption software, digital certificates, and passwords.
E-commerce helps create new job opportunities due to information related services, software
app and digital products. It also causes job losses. The areas with the greatest predicted job-
loss are retail, postal, and travel agencies. The development of e-commerce will create jobs
that require highly skilled workers to manage large amounts of information, customer
9
demands, and production processes. In contrast, people with poor technical skills cannot
enjoy the wages welfare. On the other hand, because e-commerce requires sufficient stocks
that could be delivered to customers in time, the warehouse becomes an important element.
Warehouse needs more staff to manage, supervise and organize, thus the condition of
warehouse environment will be concerned by employees.
E-commerce brings convenience for customers as they do not have to leave home and only
need to browse website online, especially for buying the products which are not sold in
nearby shops. It could help customers buy wider range of products and save customers’ time.
Consumers also gain power through online shopping. They are able to research products and
compare prices among retailers. Also, online shopping often provides sales promotion or
discounts code, thus it is more price effective for customers. Moreover, e-commerce provides
products’ detailed information; even the in-store staff cannot offer such detailed explanation.
Customers can also review and track the order history online.
However, e-commerce lacks human interaction for customers, especially who prefer face-to-
face connection. Customers are also concerned with the security of online transactions and
tend to remain loyal to well-known retailers. In recent years, clothing retailers such
as Tommy Hilfiger have started adding Virtual Fit platforms to their e-commerce sites to
reduce the risk of customers buying the wrong sized clothes, although these vary greatly in
their fit for purpose. When the customer regret the purchase of a product, it involves
returning goods and refunding process. This process is inconvenient as customers need to
pack and post the goods. If the products are expensive, large or fragile, it refers to safety
issues.
10
2.2.6 IMPACT OF ELECTRONIC COMMERCE ON THE ENVIRONMENT
In 2018, E-commerce generated 1.3 million tons of container cardboard in North America, an
increase from 1.1 million in 2017. Only 35 percent of North American cardboard
manufacturing capacity is from recycled content. The recycling rate in Europe is 80 percent
and Asia is 93 percent. Amazon, the largest user of boxes, has a strategy to cut back on
packing material and has reduced packaging material used by 19 percent by weight since
2016. Amazon is requiring retailers to manufacture their product packaging in a way that
doesn't require additional shipping packaging. Amazon also has an 85-person team
researching ways to reduce and improve their packaging and shipping materials.
E-commerce has been cited as a major force for the failure of major U.S. retailers in a trend
frequently referred to as a "retail apocalypse." The rise of e-commerce outlets like Amazon
has made it harder for traditional retailers to attract customers to their stores and forced
companies to change their sales strategies. Many companies have turned to sales promotions
and increased digital efforts to lure shoppers while shutting down brick-and-mortar
locations. The trend has forced some traditional retailers to shutter its brick and mortar
operations.
The emergence of online shopping as we know today developed with the emergence of the
Internet. Initially, this platform only functioned as an advertising tool for companies,
providing information about its products. It quickly moved on from this simple utility to
actual online shopping transaction due to the development of interactive Web pages and
secure transmissions. Specifically, the growth of the internet as a secure shopping channel has
developed since 1994, with the first sales of Sting album 'Ten Summoner's Tales'. Wine,
chocolates, and flowers soon followed and were among the pioneering retail categories which
fueled the growth of online shopping. Researchers found that having products that are
11
appropriate for e-commerce was a key indicator of Internet success. Many of these products
did well as they are generic products which shoppers did not need to touch and feel in order
to buy. But also importantly, in the early days, there were few shoppers online and they were
from a narrow segment: affluent, male, 30+. Online shopping has come along way since these
early days and -in the UK- accounts for significant percent’s (depending on product category
as percentages can vary).
2.3.1 INTERNATIONAL STATISTICS ON ONLINE SHOPPING
Statistics show that in 2012, Asia-Pacific increased their international sales over 30% giving
them over $433 billion in revenue. That is a $69 billion difference between the U.S. revenue
of $364.66 billion. It is estimated that Asia-Pacific will increase by another 30% in the year
2013 putting them ahead by more than one-third of all global ecommerce sales.[needs update]
The largest online shopping day in the world is Singles Day, with sales just in Alibaba's sites
at US$9.3 billion in 2014.
Canada 2.8%[19]
2.3.3 CUSTOMERS
Online customers must have access to the Internet and a valid method of payment in order to
complete a transaction. Generally, higher levels of education and personal income correspond
to more favorable perceptions of shopping online. Increased exposure to technology also
increases the probability of developing favorable attitudes towards new shopping channels.
12
2.3.4 CUSTOMER BUYING BEHAVIOUR IN DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT
The marketing around the digital environment, customer's buying behaviour may not be
influenced and controlled by the brand and firm, when they make a buying decision that
might concern the interactions with search engine, recommendations, online reviews and
other information. With the quickly separate of the digital devices environment, people are
more likely to use their mobile phones, computers, tablets and other digital devices to gather
information. In other words, the digital environment has a growing effect on consumer's mind
and buying behaviour. In an online shopping environment, interactive decision may have an
influence on aid customer decision making. Each customer is becoming more interactive, and
though online reviews customers can influence other potential buyers' behaviors.
Online retailers has place much emphasis on customer trust aspect, trust is another way
driving customer's behaviour in digital environment, which can depend on customer's attitude
and expectation. Indeed, the company's products design or ideas cannot met customer's
expectations. Customer's purchase intension based on rational expectations, and additionally
impacts on emotional trust. Moreover, those expectations can be also establish on the product
information and revision from others.
Consumers find a product of interest by visiting the website of the retailer directly or by
searching among alternative vendors using a shopping search engine. Once a particular
product has been found on the website of the seller, most online retailers use shopping cart
software to allow the consumer to accumulate multiple items and to adjust quantities, like
filling a physical shopping cart or basket in a conventional store. A "checkout" process
follows (continuing the physical-store analogy) in which payment and delivery information is
collected, if necessary. Some stores allow consumers to sign up for a permanent online
account so that some or all of this information only needs to be entered once. The consumer
often receives an e-mail confirmation once the transaction is complete. Less sophisticated
stores may rely on consumers to phone or e-mail their orders (although full credit card
13
numbers, expiry date, and Card Security Code, or bank account and routing number should
not be accepted by e-mail, for reasons of security).
2.3.6 PAYMENT
Online shoppers commonly use a credit card or a PayPal account in order to make payments.
However, some systems enable users to create accounts and pay by alternative means, such
as:
(i) Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies: This is a digital currency that lets you make
anonymous transactions online.
(ii) Cash on delivery (C.O.D.): This is act in which the buyer of a product pay for it
when is been delivered.
(iii) Cheque/ Check: An order to a bank to pay a stated from the drawer’s account,
written on a specially printed form
(iv) Debit card: A card allowing the holder to transfer money electronically from their
bank account when making a purchase.
Some online shops will not accept international credit cards. Some require both the
purchaser's billing and shipping address to be in the same country as the online shop's base of
operation. Other online shops allow customers from any country to send gifts anywhere. The
financial part of a transaction may be processed in real time (e.g. letting the consumer know
their credit card was declined before they log off), or may be done later as part of the
fulfillment process.
Once a payment has been accepted, the goods or services can be delivered in the following
ways. For physical items:
14
(ii) Drop shipping: The order is passed to the manufacturer or third-party distributor,
who then ships the item directly to the consumer, bypassing the retailer's physical
location to save time, money, and space.
(iii) In-store pick-up: The customer selects a local store using a locator software and
picks up the delivered product at the selected location. This is the method often used
in the bricks and clicks business model.
Simple shopping cart systems allow the off-line administration of products and categories.
The shop is then generated as HTML files and graphics that can be uploaded to a webspace.
The systems do not use an online database. A high-end solution can be bought or rented as a
stand-alone program or as an addition to an enterprise resource planning program. It is
usually installed on the company's web server and may integrate into the existing supply
chain so that ordering, payment, delivery, accounting and warehousing can be automated to a
large extent. Other solutions allow the user to register and create an online shop on a portal
that hosts multiple shops simultaneously from one back office. Examples are BigCommerce,
Shopify and FlickRocket. Open source shopping cart packages include advanced platforms
such as Interchange, and off-the-shelf solutions such as Magento, osCommerce,
WooCommerce, PrestaShop, and Zen Cart. Commercial systems can also be tailored so the
shop does not have to be created from scratch. By using an existing framework, software
modules for various functionalities required by a web shop can be adapted and combined
(Wikipedia).
1. Convenience: This now meant that customers could purchase goods online and pick them
up at a nearby convenience store, making online shopping more advantageous to
customers. In the event of a problem with the item (e.g., the product was not what the
consumer ordered or the product was not satisfactory), consumers are concerned with the
15
ease of returning an item in exchange for the correct product or a refund. (Note: In the
United Kingdom, online shops are prohibited from charging a restocking fee if the
consumer cancels their order in accordance with the Consumer Protection (Distance
Selling) Act 2000).
2. Information and reviews: Some online stores provide or link to supplemental product
information, such as instructions, safety procedures, demonstrations, or manufacturer
specifications. Some provide background information, advice, or how-to guides designed
to help consumers decide which product to buy. Some stores even allow customers to
comment or rate their items. Even if an online store is open 24 hours a day, seven days a
week, the customer service team may only be available during regular business hours.
3. Price and selection: One advantage of shopping online is being able to quickly seek out
deals for items or services provided by many different vendors (though some local search
engines do exist to help consumers locate products for sale in nearby stores). Search
engines, online price comparison services and discovery shopping engines can be used to
look up sellers of a particular product or service. Shipping costs (if applicable) reduce the
price advantage of online merchandise, though depending on the jurisdiction, a lack of
sales tax may compensate for this.
1. Fraud and security concerns: Given the lack of ability to inspect merchandise before
purchase, consumers are at higher risk of fraud than face-to-face transactions. When
ordering merchandise online, the item may not work properly, it may have defects, or it
might not be the same item pictured in the online photo. Merchants also risk fraudulent
purchases if customers are using stolen credit cards or fraudulent repudiation of the
online purchase. However, merchants face less risk from physical theft by using a
warehouse instead of a retail storefront. Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption has
generally solved the problem of credit card numbers being intercepted in transit
between the consumer and the merchant.
16
2. Lack of full cost disclosure: The lack of full cost disclosure may also be problematic.
While it may be easy to compare the base price of an item online, it may not be easy to
see the total cost up front. Additional fees such as shipping are often not visible until the
final step in the checkout process. The problem is especially evident with cross-border
purchases, where the cost indicated at the final checkout screen may not include
additional fees that must be paid upon delivery such as duties and brokerage. Some
services such as the Canadian-based Wishabi attempts to include estimates of these
additional cost, but nevertheless, the lack of general full cost disclosure remains a
concern.
4. Product suitability: Many successful purely virtual companies deal with digital
products, (including information storage, retrieval, and modification), music, movies,
office supplies, education, communication, software, photography, and financial
transactions. Other successful marketers use drop shipping or affiliate marketing
techniques to facilitate transactions of tangible goods without maintaining real
inventory. Some non-digital products have been more successful than others for online
stores. Profitable items often have a high value-to-weight ratio, they may involve
embarrassing purchases, they may typically go to people in remote locations, and they
may have shut-ins as their typical purchasers. Items which can fit in a standard mailbox
—such as music CDs, DVDs and books—are particularly suitable for a virtual
marketer.
17
an integrated navigation framework, sometimes known as virtual shopping malls or
online marketplaces.
One of the great benefits of online shopping is the ability to read product reviews, written
either by experts or fellow online shoppers. The Nielsen Company conducted a survey in
March 2010 and polled more than 27,000 Internet users in 55 markets from the Asia-Pacific,
Europe, Middle East, North America, and South America to look at questions such as "How
do consumers shop online?", "What do they intend to buy?", "How do they use various online
shopping web pages?", and the impact of social media and other factors that come into play
when consumers are trying to decide how to spend their money on which product or service.
According to the research, reviews on electronics (57%) such as DVD players, cellphones, or
PlayStations, and so on, reviews on cars (45%), and reviews on software (37%) play an
important role in influencing consumers who tend to make purchases online. Furthermore,
40% of online shoppers indicate that they would not even buy electronics without consulting
online reviews first.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the branch of computer sciences that emphasizes the
development of intelligence machines, thinking and working like humans. For example,
speech recognition, problem-solving, learning and planning.
Today, Artificial Intelligence is a very popular subject that is widely discussed in the
technology and business circles. Many experts and industry analysts argue that AI or machine
learning is the future – but if we look around, we are convinced that it’s not the future – it is
the present.
With the advancement in technology, we are already connected to AI in one way or the other
– whether it is Siri, Watson or Alexa. Yes, the technology is in its initial phase and more and
more companies are investing resources in machine learning, indicating a robust growth in AI
18
products and apps in the near future (Gartner).
(i) In 2014, more than $300 million was invested in AI startups, showing an increase of
300%, compared to the previous year (Bloomberg)
(ii) By 2018, 6 billion connected devices will proactively ask for support. (Gartner)
(iii) By the end of 2018, “customer digital assistants” will recognize customers by face
and voice across channels and partners (Gartner)
(iv) Artificial intelligence will replace 16% of American jobs by the end of the decade
(Forrester)
(v) 15% of Apple phone owners’ users use Siri’s voice recognition capabilities. (BGR)
19
The cognitive capabilities of current architectures are very limited, using only a simplified
version of what intelligence is really capable of. For instance, the human mind has come up
with ways to reason beyond measure and logical explanations to different occurrences in life.
What would have been otherwise straightforward, an equivalently difficult problem may be
challenging to solve computationally as opposed to using the human mind. This gives rise to
two classes of models: structuralist and functionalist. The structural models aim to loosely
mimic the basic intelligence operations of the mind such as reasoning and logic. The
functional model refers to the correlating data to its computed counterpart.
The overall research goal of artificial intelligence is to create technology that allows
computers and machines to function in an intelligent manner. The general problem of
simulating (or creating) intelligence has been broken down into sub-problems. These consist
of particular traits or capabilities that researchers expect an intelligent system to display. The
traits described below have received the most attention.
(i) AI would have a low error rate compared to humans, if coded properly. They would
have incredible precision, accuracy, and speed.
(ii) Replace humans in repetitive, tedious tasks and in many laborious places of work.
(iii) Can detect fraud in card-based systems, and possibly other systems in the future.
(v) They can think logically without emotions, making rational decisions with less or no
mistakes.
20
(vi) They don't need to sleep, rest, take breaks, or get entertained, as they don't get bored or
tired.
21
2.4.4 APPLICATION AREAS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
There are four various types of artificial intelligence: reactive machines, limited memory,
theory of mind and self-awareness.
1. REACTIVE MACHINES
The most basic types of AI systems are purely reactive, and have the ability neither to form
memories nor to use past experiences to inform current decisions. Deep Blue, IBM’s chess-
playing supercomputer, which beat international grandmaster Garry Kasparov in the late
1990s, is the perfect example of this type of machine.
Deep Blue can identify the pieces on a chess board and know how each moves. It can make
predictions about what moves might be next for it and its opponent. And it can choose the
most optimal moves from among the possibilities.
But it doesn’t have any concept of the past, nor any memory of what has happened before.
22
Apart from a rarely used chess-specific rule against repeating the same move three times,
Deep Blue ignores everything before the present moment. All it does is look at the pieces on
the chess board as it stands right now, and choose from possible next moves.
The current intelligent machines we marvel at either have no such concept of the world, or
have a very limited and specialized one for its particular duties. The innovation in Deep
Blue’s design was not to broaden the range of possible movies the computer considered.
Rather, the developers found a way to narrow its view, to stop pursuing some potential future
moves, based on how it rated their outcome. Without this ability, Deep Blue would have
needed to be an even more powerful computer to actually beat Kasparov.
Similarly, Google’s AlphaGo, which has beaten top human Go experts, can’t evaluate all
potential future moves either. Its analysis method is more sophisticated than Deep Blue’s,
using a neural network to evaluate game developments.
These methods do improve the ability of AI systems to play specific games better, but they
can’t be easily changed or applied to other situations. These computerized imaginations have
no concept of the wider world – meaning they can’t function beyond the specific tasks they’re
assigned and are easily fooled.
They can’t interactively participate in the world, the way we imagine AI systems one day
might. Instead, these machines will behave exactly the same way every time they encounter
the same situation. This can be very good for ensuring an AI system is trustworthy: You want
your autonomous car to be a reliable driver. But it’s bad if we want machines to truly engage
with, and respond to, the world. These simplest AI systems won’t ever be bored, or interested,
or sad.
2. LIMITED MEMORY
This Type II class contains machines can look into the past. Self-driving cars do some of this
already. For example, they observe other cars’ speed and direction. That can’t be done in a
just one moment, but rather requires identifying specific objects and monitoring them over
23
time.
These observations are added to the self-driving cars’ preprogrammed representations of the
world, which also include lane markings, traffic lights and other important elements, like
curves in the road. They’re included when the car decides when to change lanes, to avoid
cutting off another driver or being hit by a nearby car.
But these simple pieces of information about the past are only transient. They aren’t saved as
part of the car’s library of experience it can learn from, the way human drivers compile
experience over years behind the wheel.
So how can we build AI systems that build full representations, remember their experiences
and learn how to handle new situations? Brooks was right in that it is very difficult to do this.
My own research into methods inspired by Darwinian evolution can start to make up for
human shortcomings by letting the machines build their own representations.
3. THEORY OF MIND
We might stop here, and call this point the important divide between the machines we have
and the machines we will build in the future. However, it is better to be more specific to
discuss the types of representations machines need to form, and what they need to be about.
Machines in the next, more advanced, class not only form representations about the world,
but also about other agents or entities in the world. In psychology, this is called “theory of
mind” – the understanding that people, creatures and objects in the world can have thoughts
and emotions that affect their own behavior.
This is crucial to how we humans formed societies, because they allowed us to have social
interactions. Without understanding each other’s motives and intentions, and without taking
into account what somebody else knows either about me or the environment, working
together is at best difficult, at worst impossible.
If AI systems are indeed ever to walk among us, they’ll have to be able to understand that
24
each of us has thoughts and feelings and expectations for how we’ll be treated. And they’ll
have to adjust their behavior accordingly.
4. SELF-AWARENESS
The final step of AI development is to build systems that can form representations about
themselves. Ultimately, we AI researchers will have to not only understand consciousness,
but build machines that have it.
This is, in a sense, an extension of the “theory of mind” possessed by Type III artificial
intelligences. Consciousness is also called “self-awareness” for a reason. (“I want that item”
is a very different statement from “I know I want that item.”) Conscious beings are aware of
themselves, know about their internal states, and are able to predict feelings of others. We
assume someone honking behind us in traffic is angry or impatient, because that’s how we
feel when we honk at others. Without a theory of mind, we could not make those sorts of
inferences.
While we are probably far from creating machines that are self-aware, we should focus our
efforts toward understanding memory, learning and the ability to base decisions on past
experiences. This is an important step to understand human intelligence on its own. And it is
crucial if we want to design or evolve machines that are more than exceptional at classifying
what they see in front of them.
25
The power of chatbots is not lost on the business world. As brands focus on promoting
personalized experiences, more and more intelligent chatbots are being built to engage users
and improve brand image. That said it is a rarity to find a live intelligent chatbot, also called
as AI chatbot. As the thought of a chatbot springs up, we know it is not a real person for sure.
What we know is that chatbot brings a human touch. For that to become a reality, chatbots
need to be really intelligent. The crux is not the chatbot rather it is the intelligence quotient of
the chatbot that can bring the human touch.
It is the intelligence that gives power to the AI chatbot to learn from conversations and handle
any and every situation that comes its way. As chatbots move into complex territories, raising
the intelligence quotient becomes increasingly difficult. How to build smart chatbots and
what deserves our attention?
A chatbot is smart when it becomes aware of user needs. For instance, let us consider the case
of a live chatbot helping a user book a room in a hotel. The user is prompted to give out the
date the user has in mind to book the room. So far so good until the query ‘Are premium
rooms available’ comes from the user. Now the AI chatbot must understand this specific user
need to provide a relevant answer. An intelligent chatbot will understand and learn the
language nuances to give a convincing answer. In the future, there will come a time where the
bots will have artificial intelligence which will know what we want before we even ask it.
To cut down design complexity, it is important to ignore proactive user queries by keeping it
local. But an AI chat bot is based on the human capability of self-learning and gaining
information efficiently. Thus it’s imperative to make the chatbot sense natural language
utterances. There are tools like IBM Watson, Api.ai, and Wit.ai to incorporate natural
language capability into a chat bot.
26
If a chatbot is smart, then learning becomes a distinguishing trait of the chatbot. An
intelligent chatbot is one that learns conversations all the time to improve its performance.
The modules in a chatbot including user modeling modules and the natural language
understanding module which can perform better by learning continuously. Machine learning
(ML) algorithms and human supervisors enable the learning of the chatbot. ML techniques
like reinforcement learning supervised, and unsupervised techniques can be leveraged to
ensure the AI chatbot becomes a good learner.
The ability to learn is a key factor in creating an intelligent chatbot. With neural networks and
deep learning, chatbots can become good learners. Learning is paramount to ensure that the
chatbot recognizes patterns in data it receives and responds to user requests in the most
appropriate way.
A chatbot is primarily built to serve the user request. It is crucial for the chatbot to plan how
to perform the task requested by a user. Chatbot responds to each user request by learning
from the conversation so as to what the request is. Progress from one user request to another
also requires planning until completion of the task. When it comes to complex tasks, chatbots
must identify the action sequence to do the primary goal of the user. Planning is a sequence
of actions which form conversations and include acknowledgment, questions, and
information. As it learns from conversations with the users it will continue growing smarter
and smarter with each conversation.
Infusing the intelligent quotient into your chatbot also depends on what you want your
chatbot to do. You can either make the chatbot help the user or collect information from the
user. A chatbot acting as a helper is considered to be smarter than the chatbot that serves as a
collector. The helper chatbot interprets what the user is saying and performs the task for the
user. The intelligent chatbot could help the user buy products, seek information about cars or
even book a hotel room. What are the characteristics that define the helper chatbot?
27
The helper chatbot is recognized by its natural language processing (NLP) and understanding
power. Collector chatbots, in turn, leads the conversation with the user. They adhere to pre-
defined question models and are not smart enough to respond when a user raises a query. The
drive to increase the intelligent quotient of the collector chatbots depends on the intelligent
platform where they are built to reside. How can we build intelligence into a collector
chatbot?
A collector chatbot becomes intelligent when it responds by collecting information from the
user and presenting it in the most appropriate way to serve the user’s purpose.
A chatbot based on the retrieval-based model works on the concept of predefined responses.
The chatbot picks appropriate responses from the repository stacked which is based on the
context and query raised by the user. Generative models built using machine translation
techniques come with the ability to generate new responses right from the word go.
Generative models enable longer conversations where the chatbot deals with several user
queries
Karolina Kuligowska1 (2015) reveals the Commercial Chatbot to explore the Performance
Evaluation, Usability Metrics and Quality Standards of Embodied Conversational Agents,
that were subject of examination in our analysis to introduces several measurement metrics
and reviews various aspects of functioning of each virtual assistant. The focus has been given
on virtual assistants that work in the B2C sector, reach the widest possible range of users, and
are presumably the most advanced commercial deployments of their creators.
Chakrabarti and Luger (2015) built a chatbot that can contextualize the conversation and
overcome the limitation of utterance-exchange type conversations. This bot is specialized for
handling customer service. But it relies heavily on finite state automata, semantic analysis
and complex goal fulfilment map which make it very complicated to implement for a domain.
28
Eisman, Navarro, and Castro (2016) presented a method to build a multi-agent architecture
for conversations that can analyze heterogeneous data sources despite the data being scattered
across different format and structure. However, this model relies heavily on thousands of
regular expressions, Natural language processing and rule-based architecture which is not an
ideal model for ease of portability of the structure.
Setiaji and Wibowo (2016) proposed a way to store the knowledge base of a chatbot in a
relational database. They structured the database as an entity-relationship diagram and pattern
matching was done using structured query language. The problem with this architecture is
that it relies heavily on its database. But to deploy a chatbot, a vast knowledge database might
not be present in the first place.
Kandasamy, Bachrach, Tomioka, Tarlow, and Carter (2017) presented a method of a policy-
based batch gradient method that can help a batch reinforcement learning to train chatbots.
This algorithm efficiently used minimal labelled data. However the lack of labelling increases
the constant need of human supervision which decreases the usefulness of a chatbot.
Chang, Yin, and Zhang (2017) developed a sequence to sequence model framework for
advertisement recommendation, query understanding and user interaction. They gained some
significantly better result in query rewriting that maximizes information gain. It require
correct grammatical sentences to perform well.
CHAPTER THREE
DESIGN METHODOLOGY
3.1 INTRODUCTION
This project is an intelligent online shopping system using chatbot artificial intelligence for
an existing shop. The project objective is to implement a chatbot into an existing online
29
shopping system. Online shopping is the process whereby consumers directly buy goods or
services from a seller in real-time, without an intermediary service, over the Internet. It is a
form of electronic commerce. This project is an attempt to provide the advantages of online
shopping to customers of a real shop. It helps buying the products in the shop anywhere
through internet by using an android device. Thus the customer will get the service of online
shopping and home delivery from his favorite shop
To successfully implement this project, different models were constructed with unified
modelling language using HTML (HyperText Markup Language) tools for proper
understanding of the system and also to provide a coherent strategy of the way forward. Such
models include Use Case Diagram, Data Flow Diagram.
While executing the design process, there exist tools preferences for the development with
reasons to justify why these tools are selected.
Input design is the link that ties the information system into the world of its users. The input
30
design involves determining the inputs, validating the data, minimizing the data entry and
provides a multi-user facility. Inaccurate inputs are the most common cause of errors in data
processing. Errors entered by the data entry operators can be controlled by input design. The
user-originated inputs are converted to a computer based format in the input design. Input
data are collected and organized into groups of similar data. Once identified, the appropriate
input media are selected for processing. All the input data are validated and if any data
violates any conditions, the user is warned by a message. If the data satisfies all the
conditions, it is transferred to the appropriate tables in the database. A page is designed for
this purpose which is user friendly and easy to use. The design is done such that users get
appropriate messages when exceptions occur.
Computer output is the most important and direct source of information to the user. Output
design is a very important phase since the output needs to be in an efficient manner.
Efficient and intelligible output design improves the system relationship with the user and
helps in decision making. Allowing the user to view the sample screen is important because
the user is the ultimate judge of the quality of output. The output module of this system is
the selected notifications.
System analysis is the process of gathering and interpreting facts, diagnosing problems and
using the information to recommend improvements on the system. System analysis is a
problem solving activity that requires intensive communication between the system users and
system developers.
System analysis or study is an important phase of any system development process. The
system is viewed as a whole, the inputs are identified and the system is subjected to close
study to identify the problem areas. The solutions are given as a proposal. The proposal is
reviewed on user request and suitable changes are made. This loop ends as soon as the user is
satisfied with the proposal.

Functional requirement
System design is the solution for the creation of a new system. This phase focuses on the
detailed implementation of the feasible system. It emphasis on translating design.
Specifications to performance specification. System design has two phases of development
Logical design
Physical design
During logical design phase the analyst describes inputs (sources), outputs (destinations),
databases (data sores) and procedures (data flows) all in a format that meets the user
requirements. The analyst also specifies the needs of the user at a level that virtually
determines the information flow in and out of the system and the data resources. Here the
35
logical design is done through data flow diagrams and database design. The physical design
is followed by physical design or coding. Physical design produces the working system by
defining the design specifications, which specify exactly what the candidate system must
do. The programmers write the necessary programs that accept input from the user,
perform necessary processing on accepted data and produce the required report on a hard
copy or display it on the screen.
Shopping Palace is an intelligent online shopping system using chatbot artificial intelligence
which is a system that enable customers to make complain directly and also chat for more
information about a particular product. This is demonstrated in figure 1.

Databases are the storehouses of data used in the software systems. The data is stored in
tables inside the database. Several tables are created for the manipulation of the data for the
system. Two essential settings for a database are
Primary Key - the field that is unique for all the record occurrences.
Foreign Key - the field used to set relation between tables.
Normalization is a technique to avoid redundancy in the tables.

4.4 TESTING
41
Testing is the process of running a system with the intention of finding errors. Testing
enhances the integrity of a system by detecting deviations in design and errors in the system.
Testing aims at detecting error-prone areas. This helps in the prevention of errors in a system.
Testing also adds value to the product by conforming to the user requirements.
The main purpose of testing is to detect errors and error-prone areas in a system. Testing
must be thorough and well-planned. A partially tested system is as bad as an untested system.
And the price of an untested and under-tested system is high.
The implementation is the final and important phase. It involves user-training, system testing
in order to ensure successful running of the proposed system. The user tests the system and
changes are made according to their needs. The testing involves the testing of the developed
system using various kinds of data. While testing, errors are noted and correctness is the
mode.

5.2 CONCLUSION
The Internet has become a major resource in modern business, thus electronic shopping has
gained significance not only from the entrepreneur’s but also from the customer’s point of
view. For the entrepreneur, electronic shopping generates new business opportunities and for
the customer, it makes comparative shopping possible. As per a survey, most consumers of
online stores are impulsive and usually make a decision to stay on a site within the first few
seconds. “Website design is like a shop interior. If the shop looks poor or like hundreds of
other shops the customer is most likely to skip to the other site.
Hence the project was designed to provide the user with easy navigation, retrieval of data and
necessary feedback as much as possible. In this project, the user is provided with an
50
ecommerce web site that can be used to buy products online. To implement this as a web
application used WordPress was used as the Technology. WordPress has several advantages
such as enhanced performance, scalability, built-in security and simplicity.
5.3 RECOMMENDATIONS
This project is recommended for the following reasons:
1) It help in facilitate easy buying online.
2) With the help of the chatbot it helps the customer’s when facing some difficulties
from placing order.
