Let us investigate the values of f (x) = tan−1 x when x gets larger and larger.

Definition. Let f be a function defined on (a, ∞). If the values of f (x) can be made arbitrarily close to L by
requiring x to be sufficiently large, then we say that the limit of f , as x approaches ∞, is L. We denote this by
