Setsuko Machida is Japanese, but she lives and works in New York. She is married to
Nathan. They have two daughters, Holly and Crystal. She speaks English with
Nathan and Japanese with her children.
Setsuko’s days are very busy. She gets up at 7 a.m. and takes the children to school
at 8 a.m. She works at a language school near her house. She walks to work and
teaches Japanese until 2 p.m. At 3 p.m. she takes the children home from school.
Setsuko says, “I am lucky – I love my family and I love teaching. I don’t work on
weekends – but in my free time I teach my husband Japanese!”

_My family is a little complicated. I live with my mom along with my half sister. Though my
father doesn’t live with us I see and talk to him regularly. My mom and dad both studied the
same thing; Communication Sciences. My mom likes photography more, and my father, aside
from his corporate job in the government, is a songwriter and musician. My home life is mostly
very normal, I get along with my parents fine and I love my sister, she’s only three years old
and she’s adorable.
