Hydraulic Structure I Assignment

Assume any missing data reasonable

1. A site for Hydropower was identified based on the following criteria:

a) Sufficient flow to generate the demand power of (1000 Gwh/year), 90% exceedance flow
is 80 m3/s and maximum flow is 1200 m3/s.
b) The head is sufficient, from DEM map, gross head of 110 m
C) The foundation of the site is identified as sand gravel for 20 m depth from surface and then
rock with slight faults available for 30 m depth, and then strong rock obtained beneath that
level. d) There is quarry site in nearby area in reasonable distance from proposed dam site
(25 Km) and cement factory in distance of 10 Km
e) The area is gorge and surrounded by mountainous abutments and difficult to allocate
spillway on the side.
f) The river valley is 100 m at bed level and 400 m width at the surface of the ground.
Is this area appropriate for dam construction? What type of dam do you proposed? What
problem will encounter during construction period? What mitigation solution need to be
applied to accomplish the dam you proposed?
2. The cross section of concrete gravity dam is shown below. The dam is subjected to Water
load, Self-weight, uplift load, Silt load and wave pressures.

Determine the following:

A) The factor of safety against overturning.

B) The factor of safety against sliding using both sliding factor and shear friction factor.
C) Check whether there is tension? Give some conclusion about the result obtained
where the resultant lies and where tension will be developed.
D) The maximum vertical stress at the toe and heel of the dam.

Given Data

• Sediment Characteristics: • Fetch length = 40km

• Concrete characteristics: foundation material = 2500KN/m2
✓ Unit weight, γc = 24kN/m3; • Maximum shear resistance (q) = 1400
✓ Unit shear resistance, c = 600kN/m2; KN/m2
✓ Angle of shearing resistance, c = 35°. • Maximum allowable stress =
• Unit weight of water = 10KN/m3 3000KN/m2
• Wind velocity = 60km/hr.
3. Design a 100m high constant angle arch dam by thin cylinder theory for a valley of 40m
wide at the base and 240m wide at the height of 100m. Take allowable stress in concrete
(fa) = 5MPa and central angle (Ø) =133044’.
4. An earthen dam made of homogeneous materials has the hydraulic data labelled on the
figure below and properties of the material of the dam as follows:
➢ Dry density = 18KN/m3
➢ Saturation density = 21 KN/m3
➢ Average angle of friction = 300
➢ Average cohesion = 16KN/m2

The necessary data about the slices at the downstream slope is also given in the table.
A. Calculate and draw the seepage line inside the dam when the reservoir is full and show the
entrance and exit conditions of the seepage line.
B. Calculate the discharge through the dam when the permeability of the dam material is 10 -
7 m/sec.
C. Checks the overall stability of the u/s face at the base of the dam with approximate method.
D. Analyze the stability of the only the d/s slope using Swedish Slip Circle method. Show how
you obtain the locus of center of failure surfaces (R=71.3m) and consider toe failure case
and the slices shown below your analysis.

Table: data about the d/s slices

Downstream

Slices Area (m2)  (deg) Cord length, L (m)

A1 68.58 40 18

A2 111.48 28 15.4

A3 96.1 17 14.2

A4 40.11 7 13.7

Note that the seepage line crosses A1 and A2 of the downstream slices and the saturated
area for both slices is 20% of the total area given in the table above.
