Steps to open ‘Workbench’
➢ Type ‘workbench’ in the search bar.
Workbench
Menubar

Toolbox Project Schematic

Workbench file

➢ Drag and drop ‘Fluid Flow (Fluent)’ into the ‘Project Schematic’ and double click on
‘Geometry’.

Unit set up
➢ To create the proper geometry, we need to set the units. Therefore, follow these steps:
a. Click ‘File’.
b. Click ‘SpaceClaim Options’
c. Set the ‘Units’ as shown in Figure.
Top view direction
➢ We need to set the default ‘Top view direction’ so that we can easily switch between
the plane.
➢ For convenience, under ‘Advanced’ option, we will set top view direction as ‘Y’.
Plane selection
➢ Plane selection in the 3D space of cartesian coordinate is very important.
➢ For 2D flow, it is favorable to use X-Y plane with the flow in X- direction.
➢ 2D axisymmetric flow is only possible if the flow is in X- direction. However, for 3D, there
is no such limitation.
Step 1: Click on the tool ‘ Select New Sketch Plane’ which is located below the design area.

Step 2: Select the plane in which you want to make design. At a particular time, you can
only draw in a particular plane.

Step 3: To see the selected plane on the

screen, we have to use
X-Y plane selection
Plan view
Line
Step 1: Choose ‘Line’ tool.
Step 2: Select first point on the design area
and direction.
Step 3: Give the length of the line.
Step 4: Right click and select ‘Finish Line’ or
‘Esc’ to end the process.
Circle
Step 1: Choose ‘Circle’ tool.
Step 2: Select the centre on the design
area.
Step 3: Enter the value of diameter and
press ‘Enter’.
Rectangle
Step 1: Choose ‘Rectangle’ tool.
Step 2: Select one corner and direction in
the design area
Step 3: Enter the length of one side and
press ‘Tab’ to enter the length of second
side.
Trim
Step 1: Choose ‘Trim’ tool under Sketch.
Step 2: Select the line or curve to trim.
Create Round Corner
Step 1: Choose ‘Create Round Corner’ tool
under Sketch.
Step 2: Select the two lines to draw a curve
at an specific radius.
Project
➢ To project pattern over the surface, ‘Project’ tool is used.

Step 1. Create the surface from 2D lines by selecting or click

Step 2. Create the patterns to project over the

surface. There are two surface in the
‘Structure toolbar’. Therefore, we can see
these circles are not drawn over the surface.

Step 3. Use ‘Project tool’ to project the circle.

Face Split
There are two method to draw split faces:
1. To draw different faces in the same geometry and delete the unwanted
Surfaces (select the surfaces and press DELETE)

2. Draw the primary surface. Convert the line into surface by

clicking the option ‘3D mode’.
• Draw secondary objects and project these objects on to the
primary surface
• Delete these surface similar to previous case.
Surface Pulling (Extrude)
➢ If we want to draw 3D geometry from 2D geometry,
extrude option works very well.
➢ To pull (extrude) the surface, choose the option
‘Pull’.
➢ Select the surface to pull and insert dimension
keeping the left mouse clicked.
Fill
➢ If we want to fill the gaps, we can use the
option ‘Fill’.
➢ We can find this option under ‘Sketch’ and
‘Design’.
➢ First, we need to select the gaps, that we need
to fill and press ‘Enter’.
➢ These steps are shown below:
Extrude cut
If we want to remove some specific patterns through
the 3D surfaces, extrude cut option works very well.
Here pull option will be used.
➢ First, create the 3D object.
➢ Select the face and sketch the patterns to cut.
➢ To pull (extrude) the surface, choose the option
‘Pull’.
Plane creation
➢ To create a plane based on the points, lines and face so that we can split the body in a
particular direction.

➢ Select ‘Plane’ under ‘Design’ menubar.

➢ Now select the points, lines or face to create a plane.

Optional:
➢ There is another method to create the plane through the ‘Points’. Therefore, select the
points and generate the plane.
Split body
➢ ‘Split body’ is used to bifurcate a single body into multiple bodies.
➢ To split the body, first of all we have to generate a plane.
➢ To split the body, choose ‘Split body’ from the ‘Design’ menubar.
➢ First, we need to select the body and then plane through which we need to split the
body.
Combine the bodies
➢ When we have multiple bodies and we need to combine them
as a single body, ‘Combine’ option is used.
➢ First select the option ‘Combine’ from the ‘Design’ menubar.
Then, it will allow us to select the bodies to be combined.
➢ In the graphical Area, select the multiple bodies using control
key.
Blend
➢ If we want to blend two different shaped geometry,
we have to use ‘Blend’.
➢ Step. 1: Create the rectangular surface over X-Y plane
with 40mm ×40mm.
➢ Step. 2: Create another plane at a distance of 40mm.
➢ Step. 3: Create a circle of diameter of 20mm.
➢ Step. 4: Select ‘Blend’ option and choose ‘rectangle’
and ‘circle’.
