Hi I'm u/GlassConcert, you may remember me from such posts as "I finally understand my Boss
CS-3" and "Lead Paint: Delicious but Dangerous." Instead of slaughtering old Simpson's jokes, I
wanted to share my notes on the Boss Distortion DS-1 so if you own one, maybe you'll start
enjoying it a little more.
DS-1 Controls
DS-1 Controls
r/guitarpedals
• Tone - A passive circuit Accedi
that will alternately boost lows/cut highs or cut low/boost high. There
is a shifting mid cut that moves between ~1kHz full counter-clockwise and ~300Hz full
clockwise.
• Level - Located after distortion and tone, the control is passive and is simply bleeding excess
signal to ground.
• Distortion - The DS-1 has two clipping stages: a boosted transistor stage with fixed gain, and
a diode stage with gain controlled by this knob.
The DS-1 Sound
For the nitpickers, these opinions are based on the 2000 version with the Mitsubishi M5223AL
op-amp. Your results may vary, I'm not claiming expert knowledge. With that said...
It's big, gravely, bright distortion. It employs both transistor soft clipping and diode hard clipping,
sharing design elements with other distortion pedals of the 70s.
Some people would call it shrill, but plug it in and really listen to it. It's your guitar tone, magnified
to 11. All that barely there sparkly treble in your clean tone? It's just as distorted as your mids.
Distortion inherently increases brightness and the DS-1's flavor of distortion coupled with its
sensible bass rolloff and you can see why it can be a monster sometimes.
The quality of the distortion, while it reacts to playing dynamics, has a consistent timbre. It
doesn't, say, evolve and get too woolly if you hit it hard.
What Does This Mean Practically?
With all that in mind, two things become apparent that will help us utilize the pedal:
First, it's going to use whatever frequencies you feed it. Pre-EQ influences the DS-1 dramatically.
From the overall sound of your pickups, to the tone knob, to going crazy with a 10-band EQ.
And secondly, because the pedal doesn't do a lot of internal EQ filtering, your amp's EQ should
also predictably shape it.
Dialing In The DS-1
• Controls at noon, Start listening for the top end fizz of the pedal, adjust tone control on your
guitar to taste. Rolloff here, I think is key to managing a lot of complaints about the pedal.
• Tone control to taste. You might use it to tame more highs, I sometimes like to think of it as a
tilt control between more of a rhythm distortion or lead distortion. Don't be afraid if you like it
around 9-10o'clock.
• Distortion to taste. Low gain, to me, sounds articulate and useful, a "clean punk" tone. As we
rotate clockwise, the amount of distortion does increase to a point. During and beyond that,
what I'm listening for is how much the pedal is compressing my signal. I'd gladly roll back the
distortion if my playing was getting a little thick and inarticulate.
• Level to taste. Easy.
What About Stacking? Or High Output Pickups?
Treat it like a Big Muff. It has a lot of internal gain so boosting into the DS-1 isn't terribly useful in

I like to roll my tone completely down and boost into the pedal with the DS-1's tone control at
1o'clock. I think it has some really interesting fuzz-like tones in that territory.
Using the DS-1 as a boost can be interesting in the right circumstances. With the gain down, I'd
pair it with amps that take treble boosters really well. Beyond that, maybe not so useful.
"But I Still Hate It!"
Treble aside, if you don't like the timbre of the Boss DS-1's distortion then it simply isn't for you. I
ask that you don't write it off so quickly though, it's probably on a dozen of your favorite records
if you like rock music.
I think the DS-1 does have a spot in today's music. Particularly, I think it's a guitar distortion that
blends with electronic music well.

Oh, you own one, go play with it.

Super great write up. I'm so glad this is getting the attention it deserves. Should be
sidebarred!

Back in the dark days of my youth I used to play a DS-1 into a clean Marshall and wonder why I
didn't sound much like Dan Hawkins of The Darkness. Talent aside, it's because he uses his
DS-1 into a cranked Friedman amp set quite dark. The DS-1 increases the sustain and
brightness for his solo sound, acting as a compressor and EQ.
Most people, myself included, used the DS-1 as an always-on rhythm pedal for palm muted
goodness, but most professionals were using it into a cranked dark British amp.

Been playing with it a lot and getting great lead tone. Playing the george harrison tribute tele
through a boss compression to the ds-1 and getting great sustain on solos.

The DS-1 was my very first pedal, and actually the only pedal I owned for almost a decade. It goes
on and off my board but it's currently on there and I have been wondering if I should take it off. I
had used to for years to play punk and when I got into heavier metal I went the fuzz direction and
the DS-1 was just there for nostalgia. Now as my playing has evolved a bit i'm back to tweaking
with it and getting some nice lead tones with it. I appreciate the write up, it gives me something to
think about as I am very new to understand pedals beyond "twist knob makes this sound thing." I
also have been a Les Paul guy but just bought my first Stratocaster and have been thinking if I
should replace the DS-1 with a tube screamer (and a big black cowboy hat of course).

I understood mine as soon as somebody said to me "Think of it like a tube screamer"
And I was like "But I'd use a tube screamer to only slightly push something else, like the amp
distortion or a Rat"
"Exactly"
I know we generally always use dirt to push amps because those are more "natural" and so on,
but really thinking of a DS-1 as a TS made all the difference for me.

Whenever I have trouble with my DS-1 and think about tossing it, I just remember The Sword's
early albums all featured a stock DS-1 on just about every song, and they're some of the best
heavy metal albums I've heard in my life. If you know how to use it, the DS-1 can be the deadliest
weapon in your arsenal
Pro guitarists who still use it are equivelant to those high level dudes in RPGs who roam around

Let this pedal remain a secret. I love buying used ones for $20 and then circuit bending them to
give me a glitchy kind of octo-fuzz effect once the distortion gets pushed past 75% or so and
then giving them to friends as presents.

Is this a series? This should be a series. And included into the sidebar.
Awesome work again, really appreciated the insightful and humor commentary on making the
most of the DS1.
