Collective nouns
A collective noun denotes a collection of people, things, animals, emotions or concepts considered as a
single whole.

Classification

1. Generalising Collective Noun : Jo alag alag prakar ke sadasyo se nirmit hote hai.
They are considered as singular and always use a singular verb.
e.g. : Furniture, Crockery, Baggage, Luggage, Alphabet, Confectionery, Cutlery, Drapery, Jewelry,
Machinery, Poetry, Scenery, Stationery, Breakage, Dosage, Drainage, Espionage, DGarbage, Heritage,
Lineage, Wastage, Wreckage, Equipment, Apparatus, Food, Rubbish, Traffic etc.

2. Group Collective Noun :


Ek he prakar ke sadasyo se milkar bane hote hai.
These are plural and always takes a plural verb.
e.g. : Police, People, Folk, Children, Cattle, Clergy, Excreta, Gentry, Poultry.

3. Distributive Collective Noun :


Aise bheed ya samooh jo kabhi to apas me ek rehte hai or kabhi apas me divide ho jate hai.
e.g. : Parliament, Army, Assembly, Audience, Choir, Clan, Club, Committee, Community, Company,
Council, Crowd, Family, Firm, Gang, Government, Group, Herd, Jury, Opposition, Public, Team, Union
etc.

Singular samjhe jate hai or singular matbhed darshaya jaye to Plural
verb lete hai. e.g. : samjhe jate hai or plural verb lete hai.
E.g. :
.The committee has submitted its report. .The committee hold different opinions.
.Your family is well reputed. .My family live in different parts of the
.The opposition has opposed the new bill. country.
.The audience was small in the meeting. .The opposition are in disagreement over
.The public consists of you and me. the new bill.
.The team is very strong. .The audience are requested to take their
seats.
.The public are fighting for their rights.
.The team are changing their clothes.
