Unit 1: Critical Thinking Activity

Critical Thinking Activity: “Design Your Propulsion System”

Title: Innovate a Next-Generation Aerospace Propulsion System

Objective: To encourage critical thinking about the components, challenges, and innovations of aerospace propulsion systems.

Instructions:

Scenario: Imagine you are part of an engineering team tasked with designing a propulsion system for a futuristic military aircraft. The aircraft must:

• Fly at speeds exceeding Mach 5.

• Operate e ciently under extreme temperatures and pressures.
• Minimize fuel consumption to extend its range.

Your Task:

a. Identify the key components of a propulsion system (e.g., intake, compressor, combustion chamber, turbine, exhaust).
b. Decide how you would adapt or improve these components to meet the aircraft’s requirements.
c. Consider challenges like fuel e ciency, material durability, and environmental impacts.

Activity Steps:

• Draw a diagram of your proposed propulsion system, labeling its parts and any new features you’ve added.
• Write a short explanation (150–200 words) answering the following questions:
• What materials would you use for the engine to withstand high temperatures?
• How would you improve fuel e ciency while maintaining power?
• What innovative features or technologies would you include, such as alternative fuels or afterburner enhancements?

Re ection:

Discuss with a partner or group:

• How does your design compare to current systems like the General Electric F110?
• What challenges might you face bringing this system into real-world use?
