1.

What were the major events and technological advancements that led to the acceleration of
globalization in the past?
A: Globalization grew rapidly during the Age of Revolution, as ideas like liberty, equality, and
fraternity spread like wildfire from America to France, Latin America, and beyond. It picked up
speed through industrialization, colonization, and wars across the 18th, 19th, and 20th
centuries, driven by innovations such as factories, railways, steamboats, cars, and planes.

2. How did colonialism and the spread of European empires in the 16th to 19th centuries
contribute to the development of early globalization?
A: These exchanges took off during the Age of Exploration when European explorers, in search of
sea routes to Asia’s spices and silks, accidentally discovered the Americas. Maritime trade routes
flourished thanks to new ship designs and tools like the magnetic compass. This allowed ships to
carry not just goods like plants, animals, and Spanish silver but also ideas and Christian
missionaries, linking previously unconnected parts of the world.

3. In what ways did the end of the Cold War influence the global economy and political relations?
A: After the Cold War ended, trade between former rival blocs expanded dramatically. Within a
decade, this trade accounted for almost a quarter of global commerce.

4. Give two examples of globalization in these aspects: Economy, Education, Social, Technology,
and Arts.
A:

o Economy: Outsourcing jobs and free trade agreements

o Education: Online access to educational resources and international scholarships

o Social: The growth of social media and the internet

o Technology: Inventions like factories and cars

o Arts: The rise of digital art and abstract art

5. How did the rise of multinational corporations in the late 20th century contribute to the
spread of globalization, and what are the potential drawbacks of this phenomenon?
A: Many multinational companies relied on raw materials from distant regions and sold their
products internationally, helping globalization thrive. However, this growth often came at a cost,
particularly to the environment.
