ANGLICAN COUNCIL OF ZIMBABWE (ACZ)

TREE SEEDING.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Tree Seeding project aims to address the region's critical deforestation and environmental
degradation issues. Additionally, it coincides with the National Tree Planting Day, which was
observed on the first Saturday of December by the Zimbabwean government as a time to plant
trees. By leveraging our unique expertise in sustainable forestry and community engagement,
we plan to restore native ecosystems through extensive tree planting. Our objectives include
enhancing biodiversity, mitigating climate change, and fostering community involvement. The
project will be executed through a detailed operational plan involving site selection, seedling
cultivation, and planting activities. With an estimated timeline of two years, we anticipate
significant environmental and social benefits, including improved air quality, increased carbon
sequestration, and heightened environmental awareness among local communities. This initiative
represents a comprehensive approach to ecological restoration and sustainable development.

PROBLEM STATEMENT/ NEEDS ASSESSMENT.

The Tree Seeding Project aims to combat the severe deforestation and environmental degradation
affecting the region, which has led to loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, and reduced water
retention. Studies indicate that the area has lost over 30% of its forest cover in the past decade,
resulting in a significant ecological imbalance. Addressing this problem is crucial for restoring
ecosystem health, enhancing carbon sequestration, and supporting sustainable livelihoods. Key
stakeholders include local communities, environmental NGOs, government agencies, and
international donors. Quantitative data from satellite imagery and qualitative assessments from
community surveys highlight the urgent need for reforestation efforts. The project aligns with
donor priorities by promoting environmental sustainability, climate change mitigation, and
community engagement, ensuring a comprehensive approach to ecological restoration and
sustainable development.

INTRODUCTION.

The Anglican Council of Zimbabwe (ACZ) is the umbrella body of all five Anglican Dioceses in
Zimbabwe. The five Dioceses are the Anglican Diocese of Masvingo, Manicaland, Central
Zimbabwe, Matabeleland, and Harare. The vision of the Anglican Council of Zimbabwe (ACZ)
is to be a United and loving Anglican Christian Family. This will be achieved through making
disciples for Christ in Zimbabwe and proclaiming the good news of the cross of Jesus; teaching,
baptizing, nurturing new believers, and responding to human needs through loving service
guided by our principles and values, to the Glory of God. The Tree Seeding Project is designed
to tackle the pressing issue of deforestation and environmental degradation in the region by
planting native tree species to restore ecosystems and enhance biodiversity. The region has
experienced a 30% loss in forest cover over the past decade, leading to significant ecological
imbalance, soil erosion, and reduced water retention. Our specific goals include planting 100,000
native trees, achieving a 20% increase in forest cover within two years, collaborating with local
communities and Non-Governmental Organizations, enhancing biodiversity, and improving soil
health. The project scope encompasses site selection, seedling cultivation, planting activities, and
community engagement. Our methodology involves conducting site assessments, preparing the
land, cultivating seedlings in nurseries, and organizing community planting events using
agroforestry practices and sustainable land management techniques. The expected outcomes
include increased forest cover, improved biodiversity, enhanced soil health, and greater
community awareness of environmental conservation, addressing the identified problem by
restoring ecological balance and promoting sustainable development.

METHODOLOGY.

The project will commence with an extensive site assessment to identify suitable locations for
tree planting, followed by the establishment of a community tree nursery and the procurement of
native tree seeds. Over the first two months, training sessions on tree planting techniques will be
conducted for local community members, and the tree nursery will be set up. Subsequently, tree
planting activities will span the next six months, aiming to plant 5,000 native trees. Regular
monitoring and evaluation will be carried out to track tree survival rates and assess project
impact. Potential risks include inclement weather affecting planting schedules, seed availability
constraints, and community participation challenges. Mitigation strategies will be in place to
address these risks and ensure project success within the estimated budget of $50,000 over a one-
year timeline.

OPERATIONAL PLAN.

The Tree Seeding Project will be carried out in several phases:

Site selection and assessment

 Month (1-2), seedling cultivation in nurseries.

 Month (3-6), land preparation.
 Month (4-6), planting activities.
 Month (7-12), community engagement and training sessions running concurrently.
Resource requirements include seedlings, tools, labor, and funding. Potential challenges
such as adverse weather, pest infestations, and community resistance will be mitigated
through contingency planning and stakeholder engagement. Resources will be allocated
to ensure efficient use of funds, materials, and labor. Team members will have defined
roles, including project management, field operations, and monitoring and evaluation.
Progress will be assessed through regular monitoring and evaluation, using both
quantitative and qualitative data to ensure alignment with project goals and objectives.
