Tutorial 5 - solution
1. Draw on the same phasor diagram the phasors representing the following sinusoids:
and, for each case, sketch the corresponding sinusoidal waveform. Also write down each phasor
in algebraic notation or polar form (in amplitude and phase form).
Solution:
2. Using phasor arithmetic, obtain the sinusoid equal to the following sums and differences of
sinusoids:
Solution:
(a)
(b)
(c)
3. Evaluate the following phasor expressions, using complex representation where appropriate:
(a) 1 30 + 2 60 (express result in rectangular and polar form)
(b) (2 + j3) (2 45) (express result in polar form)
1 + j2
(c) (express result in rectangular form)

4. For the series LCR circuit of Figure 1(a), write down an expression for the total impedance at
angular frequency . Evaluate this impedance, in amplitude and phase form, for R = 100,
L = 1mH, C = 0.2F at = 105s-1. Find the current flowing in the circuit (in phasor form) when
the source has amplitude 10V. Find the power factor, and the power dissipated in the resistor.
Draw a phasor diagram showing the current, and all voltages, in the circuit. At what frequency
does the power factor become equal to 1?

5. For the series/parallel circuit of Figure 1(b), find the total impedance and the current drawn from
the source. Hence obtain the power factor, and the power delivered by the source. Find the
power dissipated in the resistor (and check that it is equal to the power supplied by the source).
Draw a phasor diagram showing the voltages and currents in the circuit.

6. The circuit of Figure 1(c) is frequently encountered in "10 probes" for oscilloscopes. The
components Rin and Cin are the input resistance and capacitance of the oscilloscope, while R and
C are housed in the probe itself. Write down an expression for the (phasor) gain G = Vin/VS. If
Rin = 1M and Cin = 10pF, what values of R and C are required to give the gain G = 0.1 0
(independent of frequency) so that the probe acts as a true "10" probe at all frequencies?

7. For the circuit of Figure 1(d), obtain expressions for the Thévenin equivalent source voltage and
impedance (as seen from the terminals labelled "out").
Solution:

8. For the circuit of Figure 2, find the current drawn from the source, the power factor, and the
power delivered by the source. Find the power dissipated in each of the three resistors, and
check that the sum of these powers is equal to the power supplied by the source. Show explicitly
that Kirchhoff's current law is satisfied.
