Fundamentals of Information Technology Management

Introduction

Fundamentals of Information Technology Management (ITM524) was a very interesting

course. The module topics were: Organizations and Connected Socio-Technical System;

Managing Key Organizational Dynamics; The Politics of Managing an IT Function and The IT

Manager as an Agent of Planned Change. This paper discusses how my skills, knowledge and

ability were improved by taking the course, followed by an overview on my personal evolution

and concludes with a dissuasion on the future effects of the course.

Improvement of skills, Knowledge and ability: As a technical person this course has

challenge me to improve my writing skills, my organizational political skills and my persuasive

skills. From an IT manager’s standpoint these are very important skills should be developed as

stated in the course. The course helped me to appreciate the importance of constrictive

organizational politics and shows me how to use it for the benefit of my organization. As an IT

manager persuasive communication is vital. This is because most of the time IT projects will be

competing with other important projects. The course has taught me how to use persuasive

communication effectively to influence other in my organization. As an IT manager

communication, persuasive and political skills are important and the course helped me to

improve them all.

Self-evaluation: I believe my performance in this course was pretty good however there

were some areas in which I could have performed better. I think for some of the case paper I

made some general conclusion instead of nailing some specifics. For example in the module 4

case my professor suggested that my paper was a fine intellectual paper however, it did not focus

on the short term of getting my project approved and funded. Ill surely learn from these mistakes

so I don’t make them in future courses.

Future Effects of the Course: This course had opened my eyes to many sensitive

IT/organizational that not just IT Mangers but every IT professional and IT decisions makers

should take into account when making IT decisions. The course challenged me to bring back to

memory an IT project that I know of or was involved in that failed and to my surprised the

project failed because a planned changed approach was not take be the organization and

consequently the project was abandoned. The course opened my eyes to many issues include IT

change management and ill try my best to remain sensitive to these issues as an IT manger. As

an information system instructor it is also my desire to let my students become aware of these

issues and encourage them to keep them in mind when they make IT decisions for their

organizations.

Conclusion

The course was very enjoyable as well as informative. Many important IT /

organizational issues were discussed that will not doubt positively impact the all future IT

mangers who was apart of this course. I believe that all the objectives achieved through the

background material; the course assignments; the session long projects; the interactive thread

discussions and the students personal research. Overall I give this course an a with the hope that

it will return a reciprocal favor.
