UNIT 1: PEOPLE AND RELATIONSHIP

Part 2: Describe a close friend

I have a dear friend from middle school named Han, and despite our contrasting
personalities, we've formed a strong bond over the years. While I thrive in social settings
as an extrovert, Han is more reserved and shy, especially in crowds. Our friendship had a
rocky start with some initial misunderstandings, but through open communication and
confiding in each other, we overcame those hurdles and have now been inseparable
for seven years. Despite our differences in interests, food preferences, and dressing
styles, our connection runs deep, and we can share all aspects of our lives with each
other. Han excels in being a supportive friend – she's an excellent listener, adept at
keeping secrets, and emotionally attuned. Her numerous ambitions and drive serve as a
great source of motivation for me to continually improve myself. I truly value
and appreciate the depth of this friendship.
Part 3: Modern families
 In what ways have families changed in the last hundred years?
Gender roles in families have evolved due to increased women's participation in the
workforce, leading to more dual-income households and a departure from traditional
gender norms. Additionally, advancements in communication technology, such as
smartphones and social media, have simplified family communication but brought about
new challenges like managing screen time and preserving face-to-face interactions.
 Should we rely heavily on our families or is it better to try to be independent?
Independence allows individuals to make decisions based on their own preferences and
values. Independence can open doors to diverse career and educational opportunities. It
enables individuals to pursue their passions, take risks, and explore different paths
without being constrained by external factors.
 The elderly are sometimes considered the wisest members of society. What do
you think we can learn from them?
Elders, having experienced various life stages with successes, failures, joys, and
challenges, offer valuable practical wisdom for younger generations. With age often
comes increased emotional intelligence, allowing elders to provide guidance on
managing emotions, fostering empathy, and maintaining emotional well-being.
Friendship
 What do you expect from a good friend?
What do you expect from a good friend?
A good friend is there for you in both good times and bad. Reliability
means being consistent and dependable in the support they offer.
Honesty is crucial in a good friendship. Everyone makes mistakes, and a
good friend is willing to forgive and move forward. Forgiveness is
essential for the health and longevity of a friendship.
 Are friends as important to you as family?
Both friends and family can play crucial roles in providing support,
companionship, and a sense of belonging. The significance of friends versus
family often depends on factors such as the quality of
relationships, shared experiences, cultural influences, and personal values.
 Do you think friendships change as we get older? How?
Friendships often undergo changes as individuals age, influenced by
various factors such as life stages, priorities, and personal growth. With
age comes a greater acceptance of individual differences. Older
individuals may be more open-minded and accepting of diverse
perspectives within their friendships

UNIT 2: A HEALTHY BODY

Part 1:
 What do you do to keep fit?
Whenever I have freetime, I usually go walking in the morning. It’s my
favourite activity and walking can help relieve my stress.
 Are you good at sports?
Personally, I’m not really good at sports. In the past, I didn’t like
volleyball because I didn’t play it but now I can, so I’m not good at but I’ll
try my best to play in the college.
 What sports do you play?
Well, I would say that there are a variety of sports that the sports I like
most is skating because I like ice and I love the feeling of skating on ice.
It can refresh my mind
 What is the most popular in your country?

Well, I would say that there are a variety of sports in my country but the
most popular would be jogging. Running competition are always held on
nationwide, and this year this competition was held in Quy Nhon. I think
it’s so amazing and attracts a lot of people.
Well, I would say that there are a variety of sports in my country but the
most popular would be jogging. Running competition are always held on
nationwide, and this year this competition was held in Quy Nhon. I think
it’s so amazing and attracts a lot of people.
Part 2: describe an exciting competition or sporting event you have
witnessed
There are a variety of sports in our country but I would say the most
popular and wonderful would be jogging. Not discussing many benefits of
jogging, it make an impression on me about amazing other things. Especially, running
competition which are always held on nationwide on May, and this year this contest was
held in Quy Nhon city. It attracts famous people to participate like the second runner up
of miss universe Vietnam is Miss Thuy Tien and Ceo Bao Hoang, Nhan Phuc Vinh. They
will run a maximum distance of 30 miles. I spent a day volunteering there and
witnessed my friend to try his best to run. That’s so amazing and I feel that this contest
promotes everyone’s spirit of not giving up so I live jogging most.
Part 3:
Keeping fit
 What are the best ways to keep fit?
Well, the best ways to keep fit must it is my belief that, the most effective way to stay in
shape is through
regular exercise Activities like swimming work out muscles and aid in
calorie loss. If outdoor activities aren't preferred, owning an exercise
machine at home is a convenient option. Studies suggest dedicating one to
two hours daily to exercise. It's a simple and cost-effective means to maintain good health
and appearance, making exercise the best choice for fitness
 Do you think most people consider exercise a chore or do they find it
fun?
I don’t know how everyone in the world has a thought of exercise, but
almost people that is around me thinks that is a part of human life. As I
know, the best way to keep fit is doing exercise. Why? You know, it isn’t
only easy to do, but it also doesn’t ask too much about the cost, location. I
believe that the more fun we can find in exercise, the best result we
expect. We can pass the fitness aspect and just have fun. For example,
playing sport with our friends … we can do everything about exercise
without even noticing you ‘re doing it.
 What is the most popular form of exercise in your country?
Well, I would say, going to the gym is on trend recently. Almost young
people really like the atmosphere in there because it is not only being
full-equipped with all the equipment, but also be professional when we
register a member, there will always a follow-up fitness trainer to help.
Depending on the goal of losing or put on weight, everyone will choose the
right exercises and bring tangible effects. Moreover, fashion in the gym
is on trend too. People like to share life diary on the social media so they
will take some photos with gym outfit on it. Because more and more people
go to the gym, it is certain that this trend will grow strongly at least in
the next 15 years.

Healthy lifestyles

 Do you think people in your country are less healthy than they used to be?
I disagree with this point. People in Vietnam are healthy enough and we
already have a balanced diet in main meal every day. We are having proper
and nutritious diets, the required exercises and the required rests. You
know, the culture of Vietnamese food is famous for delicious, attractive
and healthy. According to some surveys, Vietnam is the country with the
lowest obesity rate of adults in the world.
 How can we encourage young people to stay healthy?
There are some young people who follow unhealthy lifestyles and finally
turn to a victim of different diseases. They dont know how to make their
life happier and heaalthier. Therefore, they should be inspired on health
issues. The special thing is that they lack of awareness. In my view, the
easy way to reach them is reaching them on the social network. The range
of young people online is very high, so their thinking gradually changed in
a more positive way.
Should governments intervene to force people to be healthier?
I’m highly sceptical of that idea that governments should force their citixens to be
healthy. Everyone ought to be encouraged to lead healthier lives, but not to force this. For
example, running some ad campaign to show people how to stay healthy how to eat
balanced… However, I’m not convinced that would work because this is a private issue,
and the government does not have right to intervene on such issue.

UNIT 3: STUDIES AND WORK

Part 1:
Do you work or are you a student?
Well, I’m a junior at quy nhon university and major in English language
teacher education. The reason why I decided on studying this major because its’s
absolutely doesn’t have a accounting subject, personally I don’t like maths.
Why did you choose that course or job?
Well, actually I choose that course because of my mom’s advice. She told me that she
was proud of being teacher because it was a noable career and I major in this by an
accident than my plan
What is the most difficult thing about your studies or job?
Well, I suppose the first thing that I should say about my major is extremely challenging
and I have some problems with this a long time. But now, that’s been increasingly
improved now along with loss of stress. Another thing is during my process of learning, I
find it an interesting thing in my lesson, a subject worth-learning for me.
Part 2: describe your dream job
Becoming a lawyer is always my big dream. Everyone has different career dreams, I have
thought about it many times as well. Finally, I decided to be a lawyer in the future. To be
honest, there are many reasons why I choose a lawyer as my future job. First, I happened
to be watching a lawyer film. They can protect the interest of the poor, bring justice to the
innocent… to my mind, that is wonderful and right. They can stand up for others because
of the truth and truth in life. Second, if I become a lawyer, I can also protect my
family and the people that I love. Ultimately, I aspire to use my legal skills to
promote fairness, uphold rights, and contribute to a more just society.
Part 3:
Education
Do you think science subjects are more useful than art subjects?
Well, I think it depends. Some people think that science is the foundation of human
existence, it’s better than art because it creates many beneficial things as tools of
electricity to serve human being. But others also disagrees. They will be taking a holistic
way of both side to draw through drawing we understand inner meanings.

Should parents decide for them?

Well, to be honest. It depends on each age’s student. If they are between the ages of 12
and 17, they need their parents’s advices and orientations. If they are over 18 years old,
they are mature enough to choose what they study and need to understand as well as
improve their lives.
In your country, does having a university eduation help you into a better career?
Well, it depends. As many people wonder that “is it necessary to go
university when many graduates are unemployed? So going to university
isn’t the only path because university can help you improve your knowledge
and skills in a specific job, and it only provide you with a better career
opportunity, but not a better career, it depends on your capacity.
Motivation
Do you think older or younger workers are more motivated?
Well, youngers workers are more activated, they are good and nowadays
their language expertise is extremely strong and their thoughts are also
flexible and sensitive, so they are tend to be more motivated
How can managers increase motivation among their workforce?
Actually, the biggest motivations for employees are the opportunity to
demonstrate their abilities. If employees loose their motivation to work,
it can be result in a significant loss of money and time for the businesses.
So, the best way is speeding upwork progress and increase productivity
and care about creating. It helps them love and bond more
Are people more motivated if their jobs involves helping others?
In this day and age, young people are tend to be lazy and they just want
help from other person. So, it depends. If help appears when they are in
trouble, it can consider to be motivation, but also help appears, they are
always dependent and loss of inspiration

Unit4: THE WORLD AROUND US

Part1:
Tell me about your country’s climate?
Vietnam is a tropical country, so the climate here is quite hot and humid.
What upsets me the most is that he weather is getting more
unpredictable: it can rain cats and dogs in the morning and suddenly clear
out in the afternoon
What’s your kind of favorite weather?
My favorite weather is any weather. Whether it’s raining, storming, or it’s
sunny outside, I really don’t care. I have something to do matter what it looks like
outside. If it’s raining, I ‘ll stay at home and watch my favorite
movies. If it’s sunny, I’ll go camping with my friends
Does the weather influence your mood?
It's a common phenomenon for many people to feel different moods
based on the weather. For example, some individuals may feel happier on
sunny days, while others might enjoy the cozy atmosphere of rainy or
snowy weather. So do I
Is it worse to feel too hot or too cold?
Basically, I assume if it’s too hot, we can easily go for a swim to cool off,
but I’d rather become cold. First wearing multiple layers of clothing to
trap warm air close to your body. Second, it’s very cold outdoors, we just
only stay at home and don’t need to do anything. That’s always my favorite
time of the year.
Part2: describe your favorite season
Some people will argue that it starts in September, but for me, autumn
begins as soon as August and lasts all the way till late November.C
The sky takes on a deep blue hue, stretching elegantly overhead, while
the sun bathes the Earth in a golden glow reminiscent of honey. Unlike
winter's yearning for the morning sun, autumn beckons the arrival of
night, accompanied by a crisp coldness in the air. The fragrance of milk
flowers, though not my favorite, undeniably becomes a quintessential
autumnal aroma. However, to me, autumn is very special, because it is the
time of the school year. I returned to school with a new excitement,
determination and yearning for a school full of energy. I love autumn, do
not know exactly when but it gives me a sense of strange peace. In the end, it’s simply a
wonderful season, and I wish the weather of the entire
year was just asCsuperb, but that’s obviously never going to happen, so I
appreciate this short time of the year even more.
Part3:
The environment
 Are people in your country concerned about protecting the environment?
Yes, environmental protection is a significant concern in my country,
evident through widespread public awareness, participation in eco-
friendly initiatives, and governmental efforts to address environmental
issues.
Does the responsibility for protecting the environment lie with
governments or which individual?
To the best of my knowledge, the responsibility for protecting the
environment rests on both governments and individuals. Governments
implement policies, while individuals contribute by adopting sustainable
practices and supporting eco-friendly initiatives, fostering a collective
effort for environmental conservation.
Does it help educate young people on being green?
Certainly. Yes, educating young people on being green is crucial as it
instills environmental awareness and encourages sustainable habits,
fostering a generation actively involved in environmental conservation
Pollution
 What effects does pollution have on the environment?
I would say that pollution has widespread environmental effects. Air
pollution harms human health and wildlife, while water pollution threatens
aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity. Soil pollution, from improper waste
disposal and chemicals, degrades soil quality and impacts plant growth.
Overall, pollution disrupts natural processes, poses health risks, and
contributes to ecosystem decline.
 Do you think we pollute more now than we did 50 years ago?
Certainly, over the last five decades, human activities have resulted in a
notable escalation in pollution. This increase can be attributed to swift
industrialization, population expansion, and shifts in lifestyle, leading to
higher emissions of pollutants into the air, water, and soil. Despite some
efforts to tackle and lessen pollution, the overall impact of human
activities on the environment has markedly heightened during this time
frame.
What do you think will happen if we do not reduce current levels of pollution?
In my understanding, failure to reduce current pollution levels may result
in deteriorating air and water quality, loss of biodiversity, and negative
impacts on human health. Prolonged exposure could worsen climate
change, leading to irreversible consequences for the environment and its
inhabitants.

Unit5: COMMUNICATION

Part1:
 What’s your mother tongue?
I was born and grew up in Vietnam, so of course my mother tongue is
Vietnamese.
 What’s other languages do you speak?
Except Vietnamese, I can also speak a bit English like this. Additionally, I
did learn some French at university, but it just stops at simple sentences
that used popularly in life.
 What do you think is the best way to keep in touch with friends?
There is a variety options to keep in touch with friends, and maybe it
depends how far you are from your friends. If you’re geographically close,
you should meet up face-to-face. Long distance communication can
misunderstandings when you chat, you only have the words on the page,
not body language or tone of voice.
 Do people keep in touch differently now compared to 50 years ago?
Yes, communication has evolved significantly in the last 50 years. While
letters and landline phones were dominant, today's technology, such as
smartphones and social media, allows for faster and more global
connections.
Part2: describe a language other than English that you would like to
learn
I would like to tell you about the story of learning a third language in my
life after Vietnamese, English, which is Japanese.
Actually, Japanese is one of the most interesting language in the world.
There are some reasons that I learnt Japanese: first, I need to have a
language certificate include English and the other language to graduate,
so I chose learning Japanese. Second, I’m a big fan of Japanese anime and
manga, they’re an integral part of my childhood and when I learn
Japanese that could be a way to reminisce about those years.
In my view, learning the 3 writing system of Japanese: Kanji, Hiragana,
Katakana is not easy. To remember all of them took many times of mine.
Part3:
Language learning
 Is it consider important in your country to learn foreign language?
More than just important, it is considered essential learning
foreign language will always benefit a person in one way or another such
as improving employment, helping in having more immersive experiences
while traveling to a foreign country, work at an international company…
What, in your opinion, is the best way to learn a language?
Certainly, the most effective method for language acquisition
involves residing in the country where the language is spoken. This
immersive experience allows for a natural approach, enabling individuals
to fully submerge themselves in both the language and culture.
Why are some people seemingly better at learning languages than others?
Individual differences in language learning aptitude can be
attributed to various factors, including cognitive abilities, motivation, and
exposure. Some people may possess a natural affinity for linguistic
patterns, while others may excel due to a strong motivation, extensive
exposure, or effective learning strategies, highlighting the complex
interplay of innate and environmental factors in language acquisition
English as a global language
 How do people in your country feel about English being the
world
language?
I don’t know people feel anything exactly, they just see it as
obvious. In my hometown, people think a person who is good at English is
very well-educated. English holds the status of being the most widely
spoken language globally, and the cultures of English-speaking nations
wield significant influence on others around the world.
 Do you think the culture of English-speaking countries, as well as the English
language, dominate the world?
English is widely spoken because of its value as language of
commerce, which means that a lot of people learn English as an second
language. Moreover, the rise of Internet has increased the influence of
English-speaking countries. In fact, almost young people around the world
tend to watch American films, listen to US-UK songs, it’s considered
trendy to do so.
 Why do you think people feel it is important to continue speaking their local
languages?
Language is part of your core identity, a carrier of one culture. A
language shapes your thinking. Local language is more than just words. It
links a community with its parts, its heritages, culture, so if you stop
speaking your language, you will lose a part of yourself.

UNIT 6: TECHNOLOGY

Part1:
 What do you use the Internet for ?
Well, in daily life, I often use the internet for searching information,
news or like just documents for my study. Moreover internet can help me
to access social media easily.
 Does anyone have access to the internet in your country?
Well, I would say yes definitely because of the development of society
and the world, internet has become more popular in all nations, especially
my country Vietnam, everyone all use Internet
 Do you think older people are scared of new technology?
Well, in my opinion, I would say yes because the quick development of
technology, with many difficult requirements make older people feel
scare of accessing, using everyday. The reason why I think because they
often forget their ways to use some technology products is quite
complicated
 Do you think young children should have mobile phone?
Well, I think it depends on children’s age. It brings both advantages and
disadvantages, I think children from 13 to 17 can use mobile phone.
Part2:
1. Mobile phone
Modern technology is an integral part of our daily lives, with mobile
phones playing a crucial role in various activities. While initially limited to
communication, mobile phones have evolved to enable global talk and video
chat, as well as quick payments, money transfers, and transaction checks
with a simple tap. Mobile phones have already been a necessity in our daily
lives, coming in diverse forms and sizes, each equipped with varying
technical features for a multitude of purposes. With the advancement of
technology, anything is possible. Despite the convenience offered by
mobile phones, there are concerns about their impact on social, medical,
and technical aspects. Some argue that excessive phone use contributes
to social distancing, as people increasingly choose virtual communication
over face-to-face interactions. In the current era, individuals are heavily
reliant on their phones, despite criticism for creating distance. The
undeniable benefits of modern devices cannot be overlooked
2. Laptop
A laptop is a portable electronic device that I find incredibly useful. It
combines the functionality of a desktop computer with the convenience of
mobility. In terms of productivity, a laptop serves as my go-to device for
work-related tasks. Its robust processing power allows me to handle
complex projects, run software applications, and engage in multitasking
efficiently. Beyond work, with the vibrant display and audio capabilities
enhance the overall multimedia experience, making it a versatile platform
for both work and leisure. Laptops are handy, but they have downsides.
The battery doesn't last long without power, they can overheat with
demanding tasks, and you can't upgrade them much, making them not last
as long. Despite their drawbacks, the undeniable benefits of modern
devices cannot be overlooked.
3. Robot
Vacuum cleaners are like household superheroes, making housework a
breeze. They effectively clean furniture, like sofas, eliminating dust, pet
hair, and crumbs. Special attachments allow for curtain and drape
cleaning without the need to take them down. Robot vacuums operate
independently, with the option to schedule cleanings or control them
remotely via a smartphone. While vacuum cleaners are essential, they do
have downsides. Traditional models can be noisy, causing disruptions in
smaller spaces. Larger, powerful vacuums may be cumbersome, especially
for those with physical limitations. However, ongoing technological
advancements aim to address these drawbacks, providing quieter
operation and improved convenience.
4. Digital camera
In this modern era of technology, we are surrounded by electronic
gadgets and devices that make our lives easier and more efficient. One
such device that I find extremely useful is my digital camera. For this
topic, I will talk about this device.
I have long had a passion for photography, I love capturing moments
around me. Until my 18th birthday, I received my first digital camera
from my parents. I learned how to use it by reading the instruction
manual and watching online tutorials. It was relatively easy to set up and
connect to my laptop. It has many features that took me time to learn
but I eventually learned all the features this camera has.
No doubt about that The invention of the digital camera has brought a
sense of relief to everyone related to photography. This is a really useful
electronic device because of its advantage. Earlier, people needed to
change the film rolls and now there are no such issues. You can take as
much picture as you want or need. Besides, the image quality is also
increased in such cameras while photo editing also is simple.
Part3: Technological developments
 What have been the most significant technological developments of
recent years?
Well, after more than 35 years innovation, VNam has achieved great
economic achievements. The new digital technologies of industry 4.0 are
developing like AI, LoT ( internet of things), block chain and VR( virtual
reality)
 In what ways have these developments changed society for the better
 and for the worse?
Well, with the development of society as technology, it brings both
advantages and disadvantages. Besides the benefit of using Internet
easily, it can help people connect with others easily and make their lives
better. However, it remains many drawbacks. For example, excessive
consumption the internet can be harmful to the eyes and health, so It can
affect on environment, society and people.
 Are people in your country nostalgic about life before technology?
Well , I would say yes. Not only the older people but also the younger
think that we depend on too much technology and internet, especially
smartphone. The advantage are obvious, but the disadvantages are not
known to everyone, it’s a disease of smartphone addiction, we hold
smartphone in hand, look at the phone screen at any time without regard
to what is arounding us. So it’s an alarming situation and can make people
realize that it was different from the past.
Science and ethics
 Why do you think some people claim scientists interfere too much with
nature?
Well, I believe that t’s a part of their jobs. Because they need to analyse
things to serve human beings and society, it only to a certain extent,
except for their individual benefits. That’s why they just have little
impact on the nature.
 Do you have anything against animal testing?
Well, I would say yes because some people claim animal testing to some
certain extent. Animal also have scales, emotions and feelings like
humans, they don’t have right to subject animals to this kind of trauma
 Is scientific progress always for the greater good?
Except for animal testing, I believed that they try to spend the best
thing to human lives such as light bulbs, the internet and so on. Their
inventions should always make their morality in mind when they are doing
their works

Unit7: HOBBIES
Part1:

 What are your hobbies?

I’m fanatical about traveling because I love discovering new cities and
places around the world. I’m always saving up for months to plan a trip
every year. I love friends’ trips and family outings but solo traveling
brings me the real adventure and thrill to venture into new places all by
myself
 What is your favorite musical instrument?
I love the piano because it is versatile and expressive. I can play anything
from classical to jazz, pop, and I love the way the piano can fill a room
with sound.
 Do you prefer action films/comedies? Why?
Depending on my mood. There are times that I like to watch all actions
movies only, there are times that I don’t feel like watching it, instead I’d
opt for comedies.
 Do you think it is important to read novels and poetry? Why?
Well, everyone often advise me to read more books like this, but I don’t
have enough patience to read if it is not engaging. However, it’s not
necessary to read, we can be entertained by films and can be educated
via the TV programs.
Part2: describe a hobby you enjoy
I would say that I listen to different music genres depending on
different occasions. People tend to listen to jazz or soul music without
lyrics when working or studying because this is simply due to the pleasant
melody that keeps them staying focused. For me, when studying, I often
listen to pop music that have catchy melody, lyrics. I don’t know why, I
have a thought that these songs help me more energy to study. Everyone
thinks it is not a good way to study because just focus on melody and
lyrics. I also listen to sad songs when I’m heartbroken or stressed out.
You know, they have psychological healing effects that can help me
recover from my anxiety and depression. However, some of my friends
prefer listening to rock music with a strong melody that is often played in
bars or public events. Honestly, I cant stand it
In my view, the benefits of music are endless, mostly about psychology
and mentality, and everyone has their own go to music genre depending on
personalities.
Part3:
Hobbies
 Do you think men and women tend to have different types of hobbies?
I’m with that idea, men and women have pretty much different
references. Males tend to prefer sport activities such as racing, diving ..
while females seem to be keen on sedentary and less intensive activities
such as making handicraft or cooking. Physical condition also contributes
to this differences, for example, wrestling and boxing may be too
daunting for most women. However, there are still some exception: it
could be a man who loves cook or a woman who likes to demanding
activities
 Why do some people get obsesedwith their hobby?
People often have hobbies á a way to have fun, relax and explore their
interests. Hobbies can also provide a sense of accomplishment and can be
a way for people to bone with other who share the same interests.
Overall, hobbies can be a method to find joy and fulfillment in their lives.
 Do you think hobbbies that keep you fit are better than hobbies that you can
do sitting down?
No, personally, I feel that hobbies that open you up to new things are the
best, ones that enrich us and gives us a new skill. That’s not anything, but
it’s important always to grow as a person and not become bring by new
trying anything
free time
 Do you think it can be a disadvantage to have too much free time?
Certainly. Excessive free time can lead to boredom, lack of motivation,
and impact mental well-being due to a lack of structure and goals.
Additionally, it may contribute to procrastination and a sense of
unproductiveness.
 Should people feel a duty to do something constructive in their free
time?
No, not necessarily. Everyone desencs some downtime. Modern life is too
stressful and hectic and so we need times when we let go of our
responsibilities and just do something fun. We can develop our abilities to
work in team by doing teamwork.
 Do people have much free time now than in the past?
It’s a strange irony that now we have so many labor - saving devices like
washing machine, dish washing… but we feel we have less free time.
Everyone is always complaining that they have no time to relax. But
honestly, our ancestors had less time than us during a day, they had to do
anything hardly, event got any time off, vacations and worked 6 or 7 days
a week.

Unit8: YOUTH

Part1:
 What is your most vivid childhood memory?
I still remember the day that I was in grade 5. It was an afternoon just
usual, I borrowed my friend’s bike to ride it around the schoolyard. At
that time, I had only known how to ride the bike for a few day.
Everything seemed like normal, but unfortunately, I ran into a tree at the
corner of the schoolyard. As a consequence, the basket was broken.
are you still keep in touch with your childhood friends?
Of course, we did not only grow up together, but also spend our childhood
being fun or sad. Choosing different major lead to live in different city,
but we usually keep in touch by Facebook, we always make a video call
when we are free. Every Tet holiday, we all gather and talk about
something that we can not share through video call.
 What was your favorite toy when you were a child?
Let me think carefully, because when I was a child, I used to a lot of toys.
Well I only remember that is a Barbie doll with beautiful hair. Her name
is Jae. Since I had a dream to be a fashion designer, I used to make many
clothes for her. Looking back now. They ‘re not out of fashioned.
 Is it important for children to have fun?
Well, very necessarily. You see, when we get older, our life tend to get
more and more stressful. There are many pressures that trouble us like
earning money, building relationship with people… Therefore, as far as,
I’m concerned that children should be allowed their childhoods.
This means just look at the children in modern life, they are so innocent and
carefree by their nature. Why should we do like this? Let them have fun
like the past.
Part2: describe a happy childhood memory
Well, I have had many experiences as a child, honestly I couldn’t
remember them all. But there are a few moments that are still in my
mind, one of the happiest memory occasions was my first learning how to
ride a bike.
I still remember the time that I was in grade 5, which meant I was about
to start going to secondary school. Everyone at the same age already
knew how to ride it, except me. Since my parents were up to ears with
lots of work, the wanted to teach me the way to ride it so that I could
commute to school on my own, but they could not. My friend was a person
that taught me how to ride the bike, I remember that was a Sunday. I
recall having cold feet to just sit on an actual balance bike without
training wheel. she insisted let me picked up my feet on the pedals to
push off, she kept remind me to go faster makes balancing easier. She
always be my back to keep me not to fall out the bike. As a result, I knew
how to ride the bike without falling. I also practiced before but always be
failed.
I guess learning how to ride a bike is something we all went through as
kids, and in my view, everything that we failed does not mean we are
lacking of abilities to do. In fact that, we haven’t chosen a right way to do
it
Part3:
Childhood:
 Do you think people often idealise their childhoods?
Certainly they do. The order we get, the more nostalgic, we get about the
past. It’s only normal. And why we should dwell on the negative? I don’t
think it does any harm to idealise a bit if it make us happy to remember
thing in a more positive light. The only danger is that it may makes us unhappy with our
current lots of to believe that everything was so much
better back then.
 How does a person’s childhood influence what kind of adult they become?
Well, it probably influences them in many ways, some of which are
suitable or obvious. For example, if you have a happy, healthy childhood,
you’re probably more likely to became a well- adjusted adult. However, if
you were subjected to bullying, you may replicate that behavior as an
adult
 When does a child become an adult in your view?
I don’t really think there is, or should be, a definite answer to this
question. I mean, of course, people are generally recognized by the law as
adults when they turn 18, but, in my opinion, age has very little to do with
one’s ability to take on adult responsibilities
Up bringing
 Do you agree with the saying ’children should be seen and not heard’?
I disagree with that perspective. Every person has the right to express
their opinion and engage in conversations. Even children, despite their
young age, can offer valuable and interesting viewpoints. It's essential to
respect and listen to what children say rather than scolding them or
dismissing their thoughts.
 Is it good for children to be exposed to frightening and sad experiences
or should they be protected from these as far as possible?
In my view, excessively shielding children from the realities of the world
may hinder their ability to adapt to the actual world as they mature. I
advocate for a balanced approach, avoiding both excessive protection and
exposing children to overly negative experiences..
 Are children in your country generally well brought up?
I notice more well-mannered children than those with less desirable
behavior. Politeness, especially towards elders, often reflects effective
parenting, while variations in behavior may stem from early exposure to
social networks, both positively and negatively influencing children.
Unit 9: HOME
Part1:
 Tell me about your hometown.
I was born in and grew up in Gia Lai province that is one of the Central
Highland of Vietnam. It is a place where owns many springs, waterfalls,
rivers and primary forests… My hometown is also famous for Chu Dang Ya
volcano is covered with the yellow color of wild sunflower or Bien Ho is
known as ‘ Pleiku‘s Eyes’. The weather here is stable with 2 seasons: dry
and rainy season. Specially, the people are very gentle and generous, they
are willing to help each other when in trouble.
 In what ways has your town or city changed since you were a child?
Certainly, there has been a significant transformation. In my childhood,
the landscape of my neighborhood was vastly different, with few
buildings. However, in recent years, there has been a dramatic shift,
marked by the construction of numerous skyscrapers in my hometown.
 How could your town or city be improved?
As I mentioned, my hometown is not a large city, leading to significant
challenges in job availability. Many graduates with various degrees
struggle to secure stable or suitable employment. In my opinion, it is
essential for my hometown to broaden its business connections to create
more job opportunities for its residents.
 Are there any traffic problems where you live?
I could say that there hasn't been a significant issue with traffic in my
hometown. Perhaps Gialai is not as developed or renowned as cities like Ho
Chi Minh City or Da Nang, so the traffic remains relatively stable. Even
during peak hours at busy intersections, there is always a coordinator
present to assist and regulate all forms of transportation, ensuring
smooth flow on all routes
Part2: describe a place that you enjoy visiting
Well, I'd love to share an interesting place in my country, Vietnam, called
Sapa Sapa, situated in the northern part of Vietnam amid the Hoàng Liên
Sơn mountain range, is a captivating town renowned for its stunning
landscapes and rich cultural experiences.
Sapa's allure is its breathtaking scenery—terraced rice fields, vibrant
green in summer and golden in autumn, set against the grandeur of the
Hoàng Liên Son mountain range with Fansipan, the highest peak in
Indochina.
Sapa is home to diverse ethnic groups like the H'mong, Dao, and Tay,
contributing to its cultural richness. Visitors can engage with these
communities, learn about their traditions, and experience their warm
hospitality through homestays
What captivates me about Sapa is the seamless blend of natural beauty
and cultural diversity. The town offers various activities, from trekking
through rice terraces to exploring vibrant markets like the H'mong and
Red Dao, displaying traditional crafts. The opportunity to witness daily
life, festivals, and ceremonies of these ethnic groups is a unique and
enriching experience.
Additionally, Sapa's climate sets it apart from the rest of Vietnam. With
all four seasons, including winter snowfall, it provides a refreshing escape
from the lowland heat, making it an attractive destination throughout the
year.
Part3:
Home:
 Is it only children who experience homesickness?
Children are the most prone to feeling homesick, as well as children who
have never been away from home. But for adults who leave their
hometown to study, to work or earn income and live in another city, they
also feel homesick and miss their family.
 Do you think it’s better for children to grow up in the city or
the
country?
From my point of view, it is better for children to live in the countryside.
It is evident that living in a city enables young people to get access to
good education and modern facilities. And they expose to electric devices
early. However, living in the countryside helps kids to lead a healthy life.
They are physically well developed and rarely stare at screens or
televisions.
 Why do some people retire to the countryside?
Many people who are close to their retirement want to move to the
countryside to enjoy the rest of their life. It is widely believed that life
in the rural areas are more peaceful than that in the city. The
countryside is less polluted than the city and people's health will improve.
Patriolism:
 Are people from your country patriotic?
Of course. In the past, patriotism was often expressed through hatred of
foreign invaders, determination to expel them, and desire to regain
independence and sovereignty for the country. However, today, patriotism
can be seen in many different aspects. For example, people are willing to
fight for it even when it is peaceful. Others study and practice their
home culture to help it grow and prosper.
 Why do people often feel proud of where they come from?
There will never be enough to talk about country. Even if its past or
present each country is making its name known to the world in every
sector and is developed with a sense of security and also making the
citizens respect each other even though there is a vast difference in
their culture which makes people very proud of their country.
 Does intense patriotism have any disadvantages?
I don't think there is no disadvantages of intense patriotism. The most
prominent is probably divisiveness. An extreme form of patriotism can
lead to an "us versus them" mentality, fostering division and hostility
towards other nations or groups. This can hinder global cooperation,
perpetuate conflicts, and impede efforts towards peace and
understanding.

 Unit10: CULTURE

Part 1:
 What’s the most important festival in your country?
One of the most important festivals in my country as well as other Asian
countries is Tet, the Lunar New year festival. This is very much like
Christmas in the western countries. It is in the first day of January
according to the Lunar Calendar, this is the time when friends and family
members get together… And we have about 14 days off.
 Do you think this festival will still be as important in the future?
Of course. This is our traditional festival that passed down from old
generation to now. This is also an opportunity for people to return after
time away from home. Specially, everyone from adults to children all love
Tet so much.
 Tell me how weddings are celebrated in your country?
Well, the wedding party seems to be the happiest day not only brides and
grooms but also parental generation. By that I mean food and music seem
to play an important role to keep people cheerful and contented.
After the ceremony, a big feast is served and sometimes to traditional
music played by a band. Then people can write name of song on pieces of
paper prepared on the table to enjoy the day.
 What are some forms of traditional dancing in your country?
One of the unique traditional dances in my country is Dragon dance, which
means ‘mua lan’ and it originated from China. It is usually performed in
the Mid-autumn or Lunar New Year to welcome good things and wipe out
all bad things.
Part 2: describe a festival that you enjoy
I would like to talk about Lunar New Year also known as Tet holiday,
which is the occasin expected the most by Vietnamese people every year.
This is one of the most well-known traditions of vietnam. People have
been celebrating this for thousands of years, although there is some
argurmentabout we should stop celebrating this. I dont expect this will
end soon.
To celebrate, we do many things together. Before the new year’s eve, we
prepare some local spcialities, such as Chung cake, dried candied fruit to
worship our ancestors and then enjoy during Tet. Houses are throughly
cleaned out and then nicely furnished in the hopes of getting rid of the
past year’s bad lucks. Additionally, many family usually decorate their
houses with kumquat tree, apricot or peach blossom and parallel sentences
that are believed to bring luckiness, happiness, to them in new
year.
On the new year’s eve, vietnamese people have spectacular celebration
which involves the whole nation- some of them may gather around tv and
watch Tao Quan show, the others may go out for fireworks observation.
Children in vietnam always receive a red envelops containing luckey money
from their alduts. This activity in VN called is Lixi. Meeting friends,
relative is also common activity in New year.
Part 3:
Historical sites
 Are historical sites in your country popular with visitors?
Yes, many historical sites in my country are loved by tourists. There are
many attractions for tourists to explore, ancient relics such as temples
and pagodas with magnificent architecture that have existed for many
centuries. Many cities also offer guided tours of their most important
landmarks, giving visitors an insight into the region's rich cultural
heritage.
 Is it more important to preserve historical sites or make way for the
developments of the future?
In my opinion, both things are important. Preserving historical sites gives
the people of that country pride and the opportunity to admire their
achievements. At the same time, making the way for future development
helps us integrate with countries around the world.
 What do you think will happen to your country’s historical sites in the
future?
I think the prominent and popular historic places and buildings which are
famous among national and international tourists would survive and the
government would try to preserve them because of their historic and
economic significance. Besides, many other historic places which are the
part of the national pride would also continue to exist as they are known
throughout the country and government would take care of such places.
Culture- past, present and future
 What is ‘culture’ for you?
Culture is our lifestyle. It incorporates our qualities, convictions,
traditions, dialects and customs. Culture is reflected in our history, in our
legacy and by the way we express thoughts and imagination.
 Do you think that is important for a society or culture to have a sense of
continuity with the past?
From a societal perspective, having a sense of continuity with the past
can be important for several reasons. it help to preserve cultural heritage
and traditions, which can provide a sense of indentity and belonging for
individuals within a society. This can also help to promote cultural
diversity and understanding.
 How will your country’s culture have changed in 50 years’ time?
It is difficult to predict exactly how my country's culture will change in
fifty years' time, but there are some potential trends that may emerge.
With the rapid development of technology and globalization, it is likely
that our culture will become more diverse with other cultures around the
world. However, there may also be challenges to preserving traditional
cultural practices and values in the face of these changes. it is impossible
to predict with certainty how it will evolve over the next fifty years

Unit11: ON THE MOVE

Part1:
 Is your country popular with tourist?
Actually, Vietnam has a variety of places of interest which attract
millions of visitors. When visitors come there, they can enjoy the
breathtaking views of the mountainous areas in the north such as Ha Giang, Moc Chau….
In addition, tourists are able to buy some local goods in
Ben Thanh or Dong Xuan market. Some, otherwise, may be into historical
places like the temple of literature, uncle Ho mausoleum, …. to broaden
their knowledge about culture and history of Vietnam.
 What sights and activities would you recommend to a tourist visiting your
town or region?
I would recommend the southern parts of my country due to its
wonderful location with lots of lakes and coastal areas. There is a big
forest there which attracts many tourists. The seaside also looks exotic
and anyone can enjoy lots of activities here.
 Do you enjoy active holidays?
Maybe, No. I’m not one of those people who like to get out there and visit
the historical buildings, eat the local food I get so bored. When I go on
holiday, I like to spend all day going around and do something like
swimming or taking some photos in resort.
 Tell me what your idealy holiday would be
As i just said, I don’t like to do things that overload myself, so my holiday
is perfect if only spending time sleeping and relaxing. This is because, in
normal day, i am too busy and stress, so holiday is a good time for me to
relax.
Part2: describe a memorable holiday
One of my best memories is the trip went to Ha Long Bay with my family
last summer holiday. To me, the trip was not just a holiday but rather
interesting experience and learning.
Ha Long Bay is located in Quang Ninh Province and is 151 km from Ha Noi
City to the East. It is one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the
world. We took 4 hours to get to HLB by car. As soon as we reached
there after a long journey, I was stunned by the beautiful scenic views
that I only saw in pictures. HLB has a nice, clean, romance beach and
there are many things to discover.
After lunch, we took a short rest then we swam all afternoon. We stayed
in a 3-star hotel in front of the beach. In the evening, after going back
from restaurant, we sat together on the beach to see the stars in the
sky. It was so romantic and relax.
Next day, we hired a boat for a trip to see the islands. How amazing it is.
I was extremely surprise with the natural beauty of there. I was so
interested in areas and islands in HLB that I didn’t want to leave.
We did so many activities included swimming, surfing, football, boat trip
and shopping. We took a lot of photographs. I so liked seafood in HL that
I bought a lot of them as a present to my friends when I came back. I
really had a relax and wonderful time in HLB. That was pity when we only
stayed there 2 days. The trip left me very much impressive and
unforgetable memories.
Part3:
The benefits of travel
Do you think it’s true that travel broadens the mind?
Indeed, travel has the profound ability to broaden minds by exposing
individuals to diverse cultures, perspectives, and ways of life.
Experiencing new environments fosters personal growth, understanding,
and a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of our global community
Do young people and older people benefit differently from travelling?
Travel can offer unique benefits to both young and older individuals. The
young may gain new perspectives and independence, while older people
often find relaxation and reflection, fostering personal growth for all.

How can you make sure you get the most from your travels?
To maximize your travel experience, embrace curiosity and engage with
the local culture. Step outside your comfort zone, try new foods, and
interact with residents. Plan but remain flexible to unexpected
opportunities. Capture moments through photos, but also savor them
without a lens. Prioritize experiences over possessions, and be open to the
enriching lessons each journey offers.
The impacts of tourism
 What are the positive impacts of tourism?
Tourism contributes to an enhanced quality of life, as areas with tourist
activities tend to be wealthier and more developed. Visitors often show
respect for the local lifestyle. Additionally, the growth of tourism aids in
the advancement of skills and elevates the social standing of communities.
 What about the negative impacts of tourism?
Increased traffic can result in congestion and environmental pollution,
posing health risks for both tourists and locals. The arrival of outsiders
may disrupt the local culture and create adverse conditions. Additionally,
there's a risk that local customs and traditions could be compromised as
residents may adopt the lifestyle of tourists.
 How has tourism impacted tourist sites in your country
Although my country is a popular tourist destination, recent significant
changes, driven by media influence, have increased its visibility.
Unfortunately, visitors often frequent renowned tourist spots and engage
in indiscriminate littering, leading to environmental pollution and adversely
impacting the country's economy.
