Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 7 Self-Learning Module on Position-Time Graph for

Changing Speed!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K to
12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in developing
this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

EXPECTATIONS

At the end of this module, the learners are expected to:

1. describe a motion with a changing speed using position-time graph;

2. plot points that show motion of an object moving with a changing speed; and
3. cite the importance of using seatbelt while riding a moving vehicle.

PRETEST

Directions: Read and analyze the questions and choose the letter of the best answer.

1. What quantity is the measure of how fast an object is moving?

a. Acceleration
b. Speed
c. Vector
d. Velocity

Use the diagram below for numbers 2 and 3:

2. What is happening at C?
a. At C the motion is stationary.
b. At C the motion is accelerating.
c. At C the motion is fast steady and moving away from the starting point.
d. At C the motion is slower steady speed and moving away from the starting
position.
3. Which part of the graph shows inconsistent motion?
a. A
b. B
c. C
d. E
4. Which of the following shows a slowing down motion?

a. b. c. d.
5. Which of the following is/are the benefit of using seatbelt?
a. Seat belts cause a controlled deceleration of the person.
b. Seat belts stop you tumbling around inside the car if there is a collision.
c. Seat belts will keep you on your place when the vehicle is changing speed.
d. All of the above

RECAP
Directions: Write True if the statement is correct otherwise write False.
_______________1. Motion can be represented by a position-time graph.
_______________2. In a position-time graph the distance is placed in the X-axis.
_______________3. When the line of the graph is steeper it means that the motion is
slower.
_______________4. An object that is stationary has a straight horizontal line graph.
_______________5. The unit for distance can be centimeters, meters, seconds, and
hours.

LESSON

In module 7, you learned how to graph constant speed using position-time

graph. You also interpret graphs based on their slopes and lines.

Constant Speed Constant speed Speed is zero

Slope is negative Slope is Positive Slope is zero
(stationary or not moving

In this module, you will further learn more about position-time graph by
focusing on the changing speed.
Contrasting a Constant and Changing Velocity using Position-Time Graph

Study the table below which discusses two cars with different speeds.

Consider a blue car moving with a Consider an orange car moving with a
constant speed of 20meters per changing speed.
second.

Step1: Put the data in a table

Table 1: Data of Blue Car Table 2: Data of Orange Car

Position Time Position Time
0 meters 0 second 0 meters 0 second
10 meters 1 second 2 meters 1 second
20 meters 2 seconds 8 meters 2 seconds
30 meters 3 seconds 18 meters 3 seconds
40 meters 4 seconds 32 meters 4 seconds

Step 2: Plot the data in the position-time graph.

Graph 1: Position-Time Graph of Blue Car Graph 2: Position-Time Graph of orange Car

As you can see, when the speed changes, the position-time graph also changes.
In graph 2, it shows that the orange car speeds up while the graph 1 shows a constant
speed.
The graph of an object moving with a changing speed has a curved line in
position-time graph.
ACTIVITIES

Activity 1: True or False

Objective: Describe changing speed motion using a position-time graph.

A. Directions: Analyze each graph and encircle the graph the shows changing
speed.

B. Directions: Analyze the graph to answer the questions.

1. Which line shows a slowing down

motion? (refer to its color)

_____________________________

2. What color shows a stationary

motion? ______________________

3. Which line manifests a constant

fast speed? ____________________

4. Which line shows a changing

speed that’s getting faster?

vehicle.
WRAP-UP

Direction: Draw different graphs of changing speed.

Slowing down Speeding up

VALUING

http://www.hk-phy.org/contextual/mechanics/mom/impul05_e.htm l

Importance of Seatbelt:

When a car stops suddenly due to a collision with another object such as
another car, a tree, pole, etc, the car's acceleration decreases very quickly
in a short period of time. This is called deceleration.

The job of the seatbelt is to hold the passenger in place so the passenger is
almost part of the car which prevents the passenger from flying forward as
the car stops abruptly in the case of a collision. The seatbelt applies the
stopping force across a large section of the body so the damage is reduced.
POSTTEST

Directions: Read and analyze the questions and choose the letter of the best answer.
