Topic 2 - Class Prep --- For Friday Aug 30

1. What makes an equation 'linear'? What makes it 'non-linear'? What makes an


equation 'quadratic'?

2. Write down the Zero-Product Property. How is it used in Example 4 from Section
1.5?

3. Write down the Quadratic Formula. Use it in Example 7.

4. Complete Example 1 from Section 1.8.

5. Identify the role of all terms in the Slope-Intercept Form for the Equation of a Line.

Topic 3- Class Prep-For Tues Sept 3

1. Write down the definition of a function.

2. Translate the expression "y=f(x)" into your own words. Note the role of EVERY symbol
in the expression.

3. Read through pages 154-155, 164-167 carefully.

Topic 4 - Prep Questions - For Friday Sept 6

1. How does a functions domain and range relate to its independent and dependent
variables?

2. Write down the definition of the average rate of change of a function on an interval.
How does this differ from the "net change" of a function on an interval?

3. Complete the following example problems: Section 2.1 Example 3, Section 2.2
Example 4, Section 2.4 Example 2.
Topic 5 - Prep Questions-for Tues Sept 10/Fri Sept 13

1. Complete Example 1, with a focus on how the domain changes when two functions
are combined algebraically.

2. Write down the two notations that are used for compositions of two functions, f and
g.

3. Complete Example 3. Is the composition of functions commutative? That is, does


the order of the functions matter?

1. Find an example of a one-to-one function.

2. Write down a definition of an inverse function. Include appropriate notation.
