being and academic success of all students, including those who identify as
lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other gender and sexual minorities
(LGBT+). A positive school climate and culture that values diversity and
promotes acceptance can significantly contribute to the learning success of
LGBT+ students.
On the posited results the following awareness activities recommendations
were formulated.
1. Training Educators and staff: Educators play a crucial role in
fostering an inclusive school environment. Training programs for
teachers and staff on LGBTQ+ issues, terminology, and sensitivity can
help reduce bias and discrimination, as well as improve the overall
school climate (Riggle et al., 2014).
2. Creating Safe and Inclusive Spaces: One of the key strategies for
improving school climate and culture is creating safe and inclusive
spaces where LGBT+ students can be themselves without fear of
harassment or discrimination. Implementing anti-bullying policies,
establishing gay-straight alliances (GSAs)affirmative support groups,
and offering inclusive curricula are effective ways to create such
spaces (Kull et al., 2015; Greytak et al., 2013).
3. Curriculum Inclusion and Representation: A curriculum that
includes diverse perspectives, including those of LGBT+ individuals,
can help create a more inclusive learning environment. It not only
validates the experiences of LGBT+ students but also educates all
students about the importance of diversity and acceptance (Russell &
McGuire, 2008)
4. Visible Representation: LGBTQ-friendly posters and artwork are
displayed throughout the school premises to create a visual
environment that validates the identities of LGBTQ students and
promotes a culture of acceptance.
5. Supportive Policies and Legislation: Legal protections and policies
that explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and
gender identity can significantly contribute to a more positive school
climate for LGBT+ students. States with more supportive policies tend
to have lower rates of victimization and better academic outcomes for
these students (Hatzenbuehler et al., 2014).
