2umaHL: Assignment 1

• Please write your solutions on A4 squared paper. Use black or blue in on the working out and pencil
for graphs.
• Hand your assignment in in class next Tuesday.
• You MUST show the stages of your working out and answer all questions.
• Remember that you can get all the help you need in the Study Café Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Question1: Rearrange each of the following equations into the gradient-intercept form 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑐.

(a) 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 6
(b) 8𝑥 − 4𝑦 + 12 = 0
!
(c) "
𝑦 − 2 = 3𝑥
(d) 𝑥 − 2𝑦 + 4 = 0

Question 2: Is the curve with equation (2𝑥 − 3)" + 4𝑥(1 − 𝑥) = 2𝑦 + 11 a straight line? Justify your
answer.

Question 3: The line 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑐 is known to be parallel to 𝑦 = 5𝑥 + 1, and to pass through the point
(𝑥, 𝑦) = (0,7).

(a) Write down the values of 𝑚 and 𝑐.

(b) The line also passes through the point (3, 𝑠). Find the value of 𝑠.

Question 4: The line L1 has equation &
= 2𝑥.

(a) Rearrange the equation into the gradient-intercept form 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑐.

(b) Find the equation (in general form) of the parallel line L2 that passes through the point (2,1).
(c) Draw a graph of both lines on the same set of axes. Use squared or graph paper for this!

Question 5: A straight line passes through the points 𝐴(2,10) and 𝐵(8, −2).

(a) Find the gradient of the line

(b) Hence, write down the equation of the line in point-gradient form
(c) Rearrange the equation into the gradient-intercept form.

Question 6: Find an equation in general form of the perpendicular bisector of [𝐴𝐵] for 𝐴(2,6) and

𝐵(5, −2).

Question 7: 2𝑥 − 3𝑦 = 6 and 6𝑥 + 𝑘𝑦 = 4 are the equations of two straight lines.

(a) Write down the gradient of each line.

(b) Find 𝑘 if the lines are parallel.
(c) Find 𝑘 if the lines are perpendicular.

Question 8: Find the shortest distance from 𝐴(3,5) to the line with equation 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 6. (Do NOT just
google ‘shortest distance from point to line’, find a formula and use this. You can only use equations of
straight lines, intersection of lines and distance between points. These are the formulae you are given in
the exam).
Question 9: Khadija and Niels did their grocery shopping together at Netto last week. Khadija got 3 cans of
red beans and 2 cans of tomatoes for 17.25 dollars. Niels got 7 cans of beans and 4 cans of tomatoes for
39.25 dollars. Find the price for each type of can.
