Subject Line: Would you open this email?

“It's a split second decision that you can't undo, that moment after you hit send on an
email, to the wrong person.

Crystal didn't realize her mistake…

...Or that it was about to save a life.”

Alex, what if your subject line was so compelling that a complete stranger would open it…

And it would save their life?

Well, that’s exactly what happened to Marc Gelinas.

I read his story today and it gave me the chills.

Marc was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer 6 years ago today... the day before
(American) Thanksgiving…

Of course this was devastating news to him, his fiance, and his friends and family.

What was meant to be a day of gratitude, celebration and joy…

Was filled with grief, shock, and immense worry.

Fantic, Marc’s fiancé didn’t know what to do...

That is... until she received an email from a mattress company by complete mistake.

The email was sent as an internal memo about the latest research on a big cause they
supported – and it was meant for employees of the mattress company – which Marc’s
fiance was not.

Hell, she wasn’t even one of their customers.

In other words… she wasn’t on their list at all.

And to make this whole thing even more strange…

They were not even in the market for a new mattress.

So the fact that she would open this “boring corporate email” in the first place was a
complete coincidence.

Or was it?...

It’s safe to say that the day after Thanksgiving we all get bombarded with emails galore.

Hundreds of emails, all promoting Black Friday...

And most of us (myself included) tend to go through and mass delete all, or most, of them…

So was it really just pure coincidence that Marc’s fiance chose to open this email when her
inbox was most definitely overflowing with hundreds of others… or was there something
else going on here?

Well, it turns out…

The subject line was so compelling that Marc’s fiance just couldn’t help but open it.

Even though they were not in the market for a new mattress…
Even though she wasn’t on their email list…
Even though her inbox was jam-packed with Black Friday emails…

And as luck would have it...

This email update on the company’s cause turned out to be about, you guessed it –
pancreatic cancer...

And just like that, a chain reaction was set into motion that would change Marc’s life
forever.

Marc’s fiance replied to the mistake email and the mattress company put Marc in touch
with the right people at the right time, resulting in treatment that ultimately saved his life.

So was this all a coincidence, a Thanksgiving miracle or just a damn good subject
line?

If you ask me – it must have been a damn good subject line...

Which begs the question…

What is it exactly that makes a subject line so stellar that it'll get opened by a totally
disinterested recipient?

Someone who has no reason at all to open your email…

And every reason in the world to not open your email...

So Alex...

I recently got to speak to bestselling author and marketing master–Seth Godin–about


something he said at the Ad World Conference in front of thousands of marketers...

He said: Mediocre copywriting is doomed. In fact it’s already been replaced by A.I.
software that can spit out average content better than most mediocre copywriters
today...

Including emails.

He’s right, but don't freak out...

Listen up and keep your chin up because there’s something he left out...

And that is the fact that mediocre anything is dead and it has been for a while now...

Mediocre accountants are being replaced by do-it-yourself software like Freshbooks,

Imagine this…

It’s a Friday morning and you’re about to launch a brand new marketing campaign for your
