The photos are of a pastry, hiking, and sunset image with palms.

B. Lesson proper
1. Analysis
The teacher will ask the following questions:
● What is the key element in crafting meaning based on an image?
● How does an image generate a message?
● What is the importance of media in conveying a discussion?
2. Abstraction
Communication is not only relaying messages through voice and letters, It does
not limit its purpose to written and verbal text. Communication uses multimodals. Many texts are
multimodal where meaning is communicated through combinations of two or more modes such
as written language, spoken language, and patterns of meaning that are visual, audio, gestural,
tactile, and spatial.
Multimodal texts include picture books, textbooks, graphic novels, comics, and posters,
where meaning is conveyed to the reader through varying combinations of visual, written
language, and spatial modes.
Digital multimodal texts, such as films, animation, slide shows, e-posters, digital stories,
and web pages, convey meaning through combinations of written and spoken language, visual,
audio, gestural, and spatial modes.
Live multimodal texts, for example, dance, performance, and oral storytelling, convey
meaning through combinations of modes such as gestural, spatial, spoken language, and audio.
Elements of Multimodal Text
A text may be defined as multimodal when it combines two or more modes
● Linguistic: vocabulary, structure, grammar of oral/ written language.
● Visual: color, vectors, and viewpoint in still and moving images.
● Audio or Aural: volume, pitch, and rhythm of music and sound effects.
● Gestural: movement, facial expression, and body language.
● Spatial: proximity, direction, position of layout, organization of objects in space.
Multimodal text can be print, physical or digital. Examples of types of multimodal text
are:
● Movies
● Infographics
● Booklets
● Emails
● Newscasts
● Animation
● Tutorial Guides
● Messages
● Mindmap
● Videos
● Blogging
● Letters
● Ebooks
● Broadcast
● Brochure
The five Modes:
Visual

The visual mode refers to the images and characters that people see. For instance “no
gun” symbol has no alphabetic text and no sound. This relies on visual information. However,
we might be able to say that the sign uses spatial mode as well since the gun appears behind
bars that signal “no”. While the visual dominates in signs, this composition is not purley visual.

Audio or Aural
Focusing in sound including, but not limited to music, sound effects, noises, silence, tone
of voice in spoken language, volume of sound, and accent.
Gestural
Refers to the way movement is interpreted. Facial expressions, hand gestures, body
language, and interaction between people are all gestural modes. This is important in face-to-
face conversations and theater. The gestural mode works with linguistic, visual, aural, and even
spatial modes to create more detail and convert it better to the consumer.

Linguistic
Refers to written or spoken words. The mode includes word choice, the delivery of
written or spoken text, organization of sentences and paragraphs, and the development of
coherence of words and ideas. This is a widely used mode because it can be both read and
heard on paper or audio.

Spatial
Arrangement of elements in space. Involves the organization of items and the physical
closeness between people and objects.

3. Application
With the same group, the students will compose a multimodal text based on the
quote of Malcolm X “ Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to
those who prepare for it today.
