Alexander Graham Bell

A Alexander Graham Bell is famous for in-
venting the telephone. Bell was born on the
3rd of March, 1847. His mother, Eliza, was al-
most completely deaf and could only hear a
few loud sounds. She hadn’t been able to
hear since the age of four. Amazingly, despite
being deaf, she could play the piano incred-
ibly well. When he was thirty Bell married Ma-
bel Hubbard, who was also deaf.
B Bell could read and write when he was very
young, and he had a clear speaking voice. He
first learnt to communicate with his mother
using his fingers. However, he really wanted
to speak to her. He used to speak very close
to her head in a deep voice and she was able
to hear him. Bell understood that this was be-
cause of the vibrations of his voice.
C In 1863 Bell became a teacher. First he
taught music and language, then he started
working in a school for deaf children. Bell’s
deaf students communicated with sign lan-
guage. However, he believed that deaf people
should speak like everybody else, using their
voice. He taught his students a special alpha-
bet called ‘Visible Speech’.
D Bell started to become more interested in
the science of the human ear, and between
1872 and 1874 he worked at different univer-
sities. In 1874 he first had the idea for the
telephone. Two years later, on 10th March,
1876, Bell spoke to someone on the tele-
phone for the first time. He phoned his assist-
ant, Thomas Watson, in the room next door.
Another inventor, Gray, invented the tele-
phone at about the same time as Bell. How-
ever, Bell registered his invention first. Bell in-
vented many different things before his death
in 1922, but he always remained fascinated
by communication.

3 Read the emails. Write T (true), F (false), or DS (doesn’t say).

Hi everyone,
Can you help me with something? I have to write a short
report for homework. I need you to answer the question:
Which animal is the most intelligent? Why? Email your
answer quickly. I have to hand it in tomorrow morning.
Thanks!
Orla

Hi Orla,
That’s easy! Dogs are the most intelligent animals because
they can understand everything. When I tell my dog to get
a ball, he always does it.
Bye, Jake

Dear Orla,
That’s a difficult question! What does ‘intelligent’ mean?
Animals are intelligent in different ways. Some monkeys
can communicate with humans. There are also some birds
which can talk – that’s quite clever! Dogs are very
intelligent too. Police dogs and farm dogs do jobs that
humans can’t. Yes, I think dogs are the most intelligent.
See you on Thursday, Sheryl

Hi Orla
I don’t know. I read somewhere that cats are very clever
and have good memories. Also, they like experimenting
and enjoy finding solutions to problems.
All the best, Ben

Unit 8 Test A Communication
Hi Orla,
Most people will answer ‘dogs’. I believe that dolphins are
more intelligent than all other animals. A dolphin brain is
bigger than the human brain. Also, scientific tests show
that they can understand complicated ideas. Good luck!
Megan

Example Orla wants help with her homework. T

1 Jake’s dog can understand instructions.
2 Sheryl says ‘intelligent’ has different meanings.
3 Police dogs have more abilities than farm dogs.
4 Ben has got a pet cat.
5 Cats can remember things and experiment.
6 Megan thinks dogs are the most intelligent.
7 A dolphin brain weighs about 2kg.

4 Imagine you are Orla. Write a report called ‘Animal intelligence’ in about 90–110 words.
