Writing Linear Equations

Go to student.desmos.com and type in the code C8AJPD to complete the “Parallel and
Perpendicular Lines” activity.

Point Slope Form:

Point slope form is used when given a point and a slope or if a point and a slope is easily found.

y − y1 = m(x − x1)

m = slope
(x1, y1) is the given point
Examples:
1
1. A line that has a slope of and goes through the point (−4,5).
2

2. A line that passes through the points (−2, − 8) and (−9,6).

3. Write two possible point slope equations of the line that passes through the points (6,10)
and (−8, − 12).
Writing Linear Equations

Standard Form:
Ax + By = C
1. A must be positive
2. No decimals or fractions
3. No common factors

Change the following into standard form:

4. 2y = 4x + 5

2
5. y =− x−6
3

6. 12y = 4x + 8

Change the following into standard form:

7. −6y = − 4x + 24

8. x = y−3

Writing Linear Equations

What do you need?

Slope intercept form: you need the slope and a y-intercept. So if you have this information or it
is easy to find you can use slope intercept form.

Point slope form: you need a point and a slope. So if you have this information or it is easy to
find you can use point slope form.

Standard form: we start in slope intercept or point slope form and change it to standard form.

Complete the following:

9. What is the slope of the line going through the points (−5,2) and (4,3)?

10. Write the equation in slope intercept form of the line passing through the points (−2,6) and
(4,6).

11. Write the equation in slope intercept form of the line passing through the point (−6, − 6)
4
with a slope of .

12. Write the equation in point slope form of the line passing through the point (12,0) with a
1
slope of − .

Writing Linear Equations

13. Write two possible point slope form equations for the line that passes through the points
(−4,12) and (−2, − 4). Then rewrite both equations in slope intercept form and confirm that
you get the same answer both times.

14. Write the equation in standard form of the line that passes through the point (0,4) and has
4
a slope of .
3

15. Write the equation in standard form of the line that passes through the points (−8, − 5)
and (−3,10).

16. Write the following equation in standard form: −6x − 3y − 12 = 21

Writing Linear Equations

Remember what you learned about perpendicular and parallel lines when completing the
following:

17. Find the equation in all three forms of a line that goes through the point (4,5) and is parallel
to the line with the equation y = 3x + 2.

18. Find the equation in all three forms of a line that goes through the point (−8,2) and is
4
perpendicular to the line with the equation y = x − 5.
