Welcome to ESL Level 4B

_______________________________________________________________________
This course takes you to the stage where you can communicate on a very basic level of English.

What am I going to learn? At the beginning of each quarter, your teacher will explain the course objectives to detail what you
should know and what you should be able to do by the end of the course. As a guideline, by the end of this level, you should be
able to agree to the ‘can do’ statements on the back of this page

What are the classes like? In each class, as teachers present each topic, you will engage in a lot of speaking activities in pairs and
groups to use all existing knowledge of English, so that you can also be helping and learning from other students. Lessons have
been designed to incorporate different levels of students, ensuring that you move forward steadily according to your own pace,
and allowing sufficient time for each student to develop a true understanding of the skills and knowledge. Your contribution to the
class is an important part of the learning process for everyone.

What about homework? Your teacher will assign homework on a regular basis to provide extra practice of what you have
studied in class, or in preparation for the next class. It is essential for your learning and for your contribution to future classes that
you do the homework set by the teacher.

Can I help myself in other ways? Many factors will influence how quickly you learn. Attending classes regularly, presenting
timely homework and speaking ONLY English while at the school and as much as possible outside of the school is imperative to
your success as a language learner.

How important is regular attendance? Regular attendance is VERY IMPORTANT. Students are expected to attend and
participate in all lessons in order to succeed. You must arrive on time and remain in class for the entire duration to receive
attendance credit.

How am I evaluated? You are evaluated in each class according to the following criteria:

Assignments The assignments grade includes timely completion of homework, lab work, group 30%
projects, and effort in completing assignments correctly.
Midterm The midterm exam is a summative test or project given in the middle of each 30%
exam quarter.
Final exam The final exam is a summative test or project given at the end of each quarter. 40%
PLUS
Class conduct Students receive a 1-4 rating on each point below. The highest rating is given to 1-4
students who: rating
1. Arrive on time and stay in class for the duration of the lesson
2. Speak only ENGLISH in class
3. Respect teachers and classmates
4. Put the cell phone away and focus on the lesson
5. Come prepared and bring completed homework, books, and materials
6. Actively participate in class activities completing all classwork

A final grade will be given at the end of each quarter and you can check your progress report online (on quick schools). To
maintain a good academic standing you need to:
1. Maintain a minimum of 80% attendance and 2.7 GPA (cumulative) while enrolled at Approach and
2. Demonstrate normal progress through academic levels in a sequential manner. You may repeat a level twice but your
maximum length of enrolment in the ESL program is 36 months.

How do I progress to the next level? To be promoted to the next program level you must attain a minimum of 80% attendance
and have a minimum 2.7 GPA for the current level.

We hope that you enjoy your classes!
