Be: Simple Past (Affirmative and Negative)

Usage:

● The simple past of "be" is "was" for singular subjects (I, he, she, it) and "were" for plural
subjects (you, we, they).

Affirmative:

● Examples:
○ "I was at the concert."
○ "They were excited about the trip."

Negative:

● Formed by adding "not" after "was" or "were."


● Examples:
○ "She was not (wasn’t) at school yesterday."
○ "We were not (weren’t) late for the meeting."

Practice Activity: Write five affirmative and five negative sentences using "was" and "were"
about your past experiences.

2. Past Time Expressions

Common Expressions:

● Yesterday: Refers to the day before today.


○ Example: "I went to the park yesterday."
● Last week/month/year: Refers to the previous week, month, or year.
○ Example: "We traveled to Spain last summer."
● A year ago: Indicates something that happened one year before now.
○ Example: "I graduated a year ago."
● In 2010: Refers to a specific year in the past.
○ Example: "They moved here in 2010."

Practice Activity: Create sentences using each of the past time expressions mentioned above.

3. Be: Simple Past (Interrogative and Short Answers)

Interrogative:
● Questions in the simple past with "be" start with "Was" or "Were."
● Examples:
○ "Were you at the party?"
○ "Was she happy with the results?"

Short Answers:

● Respond with "Yes" or "No," repeating the verb.


● Examples:
○ "Yes, I was." / "No, I wasn’t."
○ "Yes, they were." / "No, they weren’t."

Practice Activity: Formulate five questions using "was" and "were," then practice providing
short answers.

4. Question Words with Was/Were

Common Question Words:

● Who: Used to ask about people.


○ Example: "Who was your favorite teacher?"
● What: Used for general inquiries.
○ Example: "What were you doing last night?"
● Where: Used to ask about locations.
○ Example: "Where were they yesterday?"
● When: Used to ask about time.
○ Example: "When was the last time you traveled?"

5. Have: Simple Past (Affirmative)

Usage:

● The simple past of "have" is "had," used for all subjects.

Affirmative:

● Examples:
