LAB REPORT ELACTRICAL MACHINE PERFOREMED BY ABDULLAH, MUJAHID, AHSAN AND MEHTAB

LAB TITLE:
COMPONENT OF VOLTAGE DROP IN DC SHUNT GENERATOR
THEORY:

 The components of voltage drop in DC shunt generator are as follows.

 Voltage drop due to armature reaction:
 The armature current Ia is the sum of the field current Iƒ and the load current IL
which flows through the armature thus due to the armature resistance Ra voltage drop
will occur.
 Voltage drop due to field current decrease: when the voltage drop due to the above
reason voltage decreases which causes the field current to decreases.

APPARATUS:
 DC shunt generator.
 R.P.M Meter.
 Power supply for DC shunt generator field (F1,F2).
 DC drive for Prime mover.
 Volt meters.
 Ammeters.
 Load.
 Connecting leads.

Procedure:
 Connect the circuit for the shunt generator as shown in figure 1.
 Adjust the value of shunt regulator so that field current has a value of 6A. Note down the
no-load voltage.
 Add a variable resistance load of ( 0-100) Ohm.
 Start increasing the load current (i.e. decreasing the resistance0 and note down the value
of load current IL and field current Iƒ. The terminal voltage Vt for different values of the
load current is the voltage drop for shunt generator.
 Make the speed of the prime mover constant at every set of the reading 1400 r.p.m by
changing the applied voltage.
 In order to calculate the voltage drop due to armature reaction, the voltage drop due to
IaRa is subtracted from the second set of reading terminal voltage for the same load
current IL.

Precaution:
 Take the first reading for no load
 Maximum allowable current for the field winding is 0.6A. Don’t exceed this limit.
 Maximum allowable voltage to be generated by generator is 200V.
 Maximum speed of the DC PM motor (Prime mover) for DC generator is 1500r.p.m.
